Well that was worthwhile!!!! NOT

Thanks Scandichic you're experience is amazing and I'd be proud of myself if I'm in a similar situation this time next year.
I have about 6 stone to lose. I know this week I've lost loads, probably cos I'm not eating much at all, mainly because I'm not sure what to eat, breakfast is hardest for me.....I'm thinking as a type - I miss my weetabix and raisins :(
You need to change your way of thinking. Think of cereal as a bowl of white sugar. Would you still eat it? Carb turns into sugar when you eat it and is released into bloodstream, generating insulin.
Try bacon, kippers, 97% meat sausages with eggs in any format and mushrooms, tomatoes.
Or plain full fat Greek yoghurt with berries mixed in.
Or scrambled eggs made with double cream and smoked salmon.
Or cold meat and cheese.

Just keep an eye your chlesterol levels don't elevate too much when you have a higher fat diet

It's the particle test which is important. The standard test measures the amount of HDL, ldl and triglycerades but not the particle size of the ldl. This is key. If the ldl particles are large in size then the amount present is not so imporant.

Hi and welcome. Your GP experience was about the same as mine at diagnosis 10 years ago and that was with the resident diabetes GP. As you are overweight then I would assume T2 and see how it goes. Late onset T1 will often present as thin having lost a lot of weight because the body just can't use the glucose in food as there is little insulin. My son has just lost 6 stone from 18 stone starting last September thru low-carbing; similar for my wife. Low-carbing does work but it requires good discipline. Think carbs in all the food you eat and gradually you will move your diet to changed foods and forget biscuits and cakes apart from the occasional treat. Don't trust any packaged foods; always read the labels. Avoid many of the fancy named coffees in the coffe shops. Use sweeteners instead of sugar. My wife makes fruit crumble with sucralose and fruit cake with no added sugar. Keep at it and you'll get there. You may have Metformin added after 3 months to help a bit. BTW I agree with Type1Bri ref diabetes types and causes.

I asked what my cholesterol level was at the docs yesterday Bri - they didn't check for that, I really should have guessed that!! My aim is low carb/ full fat - as opposed to high fat, with my cholesterol in mind, don't want one thing addressed at the expense of another.

I'm not a great fan of eggs Scandichic but I can eat them scrambled, so that's an option.

Lynn1 I love that Fage Greek yogurt, it's really creamy.

My cholesterol is 7.2
Trigs 0.5
HDL 1.4
LDL 5.2
Trigs indicate particles big and fluffy but doc refuses to pay for particle test. Feel healthier and fitter than have in long time. Good luck!

Misspooh it sounds like a good plan to me, good luck and keep us updated with your progress
The diabetic ranges for acceptable chlestorel to avoid later complications are
Total of 4 or under
Hdl to be greater than 1
Ldl to be under trigs below 2.3, although advice is differing between HCP on that one

I've recently tried adding some (unsweetened!) desiccated coconut to my yogurt (then leave it to stand for 10 minutes) - less carbs and more filling than berries and very, very tasty :)

HI. Be aware that for reliable cholesterol results at your annual blood test it needs to be a fasting test. Many annual checks are now non-fasting so do agree with the GP that if you want to know your true cholesterol levels and breakdown you must go for a fasting test next time.

You guys are so helpful - Im so glad I found this place, definitely making a difficult new situation that much easier to deal with.

Terrific isn't it? Light years away from NHS advice which is more than worrying.

I'd go as far as saying its a God Send Lynn1 - it's so difficult to know how to cope with such a big change in my lifestyle.
I know a lot of it is down to the individual, so it's a try and see for lots of things, but even knowing what route to take is such a help.

Just read this post wow what I have learnt in the last week on here is amazing when I had my diagnosis with the diabetic nurse I left more confused than ever and I already had some basic knowledge as my dad was type 2
