Hello I have just been diagnosed with type 2 3 weeks ago and on Metformin Hydrochloride 2 500mg in morning and 2 at night, I dont drink or smoke only on occasions I am getting married in may and I would like to be able to enjoy my day and night but dont have a clue what to have I used to drink wine or Disaronno with lemonade, I am seeing my occupational health at work next week but I'd like some advice from real people with diabetes.

Thank you
Scott

@ScotyPeck

Congratulations...hope the day goes well.

Same meds as me.
I like a beer but cut down quite dramatically on Diagnosis (DX)

I've since realised many still do, it's just the beers is not the best choice.

Red wine...good
Champagne better I think, so at least one good drink on the day.;)

Disarano n lemonade....caution required

I have drunk beer since
(brothers funeral , Xmas
and now while on holiday)

I doubt if your sensible, it will be a real issue...however the danger is overdoing it....as always

and mixers..

vodka/gin types with soda water or diet drinks ( 0 cal) seems to be the best way.

Diet doctor..is a good source to find the best choices, I found.

Best wishes

Welcome to the forum @ScotyPeck and best wishes for your forthcoming nuptials!
I wouldn't worry too much on what you drink on your wedding day, it's a special occasion.
But generally red wine is ok. Champagne and dry white wines like muscadet are ok. But Disaronno is high in sugars - 18g in a standard measure, and the lemonade would be high in sugar too.
Most (non-sweet) spirits are ok if you have them neat or with a diet (low sugar) mixer, but liqueurs are usually higher in sugars.

Thank you for your reply, sorry about your brother and hope your holiday is going well, it will be only for the night really, like I've said I hardly drink like once or twice in a year sometimes I've gone nothing for years not a big drinker, I'll stick to vodka or gin with sugar free mixer dont like them but better than disorano.

Thank you Scott

Thank you for your replay I'll look into the champagne.

Hi @ScotyPeck,

I usually have a very dry red wine (about 1g to 2g of sugar per liter), but have snuck about a third of my husband's glass of beer in the past.

Two notes of caution, though. First, often as T2s, we do already have fatty liver, so consuming alcohol doesn't necessarily help this. Second, metformin and alcohol don't mix very well -- so while on metformin, I usually limited myself to one glass of red wine or maybe one and a half.

Congrats on getting married and hope you have a blast in May.

Funnily enough one member on here mentioned she lost her way on her low carb diet owing to to alcohol. After a few drinks she ended up having a carby binge.

I used to enjoy a whisky with ginger ale on a regular basis, for a number of years. After I had my gall bladder removed in 2005 I became aware of my own “mortality” and decided to stop drinking, which I largely achieved. At my own wedding in 2011 there was no alcohol and this was chiefly driven by my wife who forbid it. :D. Since then alcohol has been a rarity for us both and I in particular have pretty much been without alcohol in the last couple of years and even then in very small measures.

Another reason for steering clear of alcohol in recent years for me has been the meds that I take for blood pressure which do not mix well, I believe.

Driving has been another factor, especially before my wife learned to drive.

I do enjoy a drink but have chosen to stop. In a social situation where alcohol consumption is an expectation I usually confine it to one measure.

Anyway cheers mate. :D

(I have read with interest that some of the spirits are low carb friendly)

I notice this question is posed in a generic (not type 2) sub forum. As it may be read in the future by someone recently diagnosed with other types of diabetes, I will answer from a type 1 perspective.
There are a few things to consider with alcohol
- carbs. Beer, cider, mixers and some flavoured spirits are relatively high in carbs. If you are consuming one or two drinks, you should think about taking insulin for the carbs. Wine, champagne and some spirits are low enough carb they can be drunk without the needles.
- liver and alcohol. Our livers do not like alcohol and see it as poison which they need to get rid of. Whilst the liver is disposing of the alcohol, it will not be releasing anything else like glycogen. As a result, we do not have as much background glucose for up to 24 hours after drinking which may lead to low BG and hypo. For this reason, I stop taking insulin for the drinks after a couple. If possible, I reduce my basal insulin. If not, I eat a slice of toast (without insulin) before going to bed.
- a person with diabetes having a hypo may appear as if they are drunk when they are not. Therefore, I always carry hypo treatment with me and make sure one of my mates knows I have diabetes and will remind me to check my bg if I am behaving strange.

Type 1 diabetes has not stopped me enjoying a drink any less than before my diagnosis.

Sorry am new to this and did try and look for a forum, thank you I work in a hospital and know all the dangers of drink and meds, but there no clinics I can just go and ask as they are busy in the day hours and not there at night, plus I like to hear from people going through it, when I've drank in the past I have always have to drinks say pints or wkds then had 1 or 2 bottles water and done that through the night and never had a hang over and always way remembered every detail funny enough lol, so on my wedding day I'll be doing the same but the drink will most properly be vodka and a diet mixer then a water after vodka hits me hard so wont take many to make me a dancing gorrla lol.

Thank you for you reply
