Well all food has labels so check for the carbohydrate content and try to get things that are under 5g per 100g. that would probably be of huge benefit to you. Once your bloods have stabilised then you can start tweaking things a bit.

Poor grammar, bullying and drunks.
I started trying eggs alone for breakfast and hated it, I *needed* bread. I tried the Burgen and the Lidl rolls but kept it to a minimum. Gradually I found that I really didn't need the bread and now I rarely have it at all. All you can do is try. I love my boiled eggs with a knob of real butter and a little Boursin but have to admit that I wouldn't want it every day. Just experiment and test/record your bg levels. I now do not have breakfast as such and eat later in the day, for me this is comfortable and you must find what is comfortable for you. Good luck.

I haven't personally made any of these, as I never ate cereal anyway, but in terms of the sites there, I'm a fan (generally) of most of these site owners, and most are living reduced carb lives. Jamie Oliver's low carb rercipes can still contain quite a lot of carbs, but as you are testing your bloods, you can eat to your meter. If th number is too high, try a bit less, or try something else.

I seem to recall @Brunneria commenting somewhere that she had bought some LC granola, but I also seem to recall it to be quite pricey for an every day brerkkers. I'm surer she'll drop by some time and pass comment, and probably correct my memory!

@Angelloubjr33 I’m another who doesn’t eat breakfast, but you might want to check out the “what have you eaten today” thread on the low carb forum. A few of the regular posters there are using paleo porridge for breakfast. Tagging @Chook who might be able to help with the recipe.

I'm not sure where you are based but i have recently switched to Paleo museli from Aldi (after not realising that my usual breakfast cereals caused spikes as they were masked by a relatively good reading at lunch).

I have the standard portion (45g) which is approx 7g of carbs plus a bit of milk and generally some blueberries or raspberries. This maintains my levels quite nicely (overall about 20g of carbs). They do a fruity version and a nutty version.

I've also tried Swiss style museli from Tesco which isn't too bad for me.

When I fancy a change I have Greek yoghurt worth berries.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 250,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:
  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

I usually skip breakfast but when the need arises I have a bowl of Greek yoghurt, occaisionally scrambled egg with cheese and have even been known to have sugar free jelly made with double cream and yoghurt, bizzarly nice for breakfast. X

I have Dorset Spelt muesli most mornings with yoghurt and it doesn't raise my blood sugar at all. I found out quite early that spelt bread (available at Sainsbury's) was fine for me, so thought I'd try the spelt muesli when I saw it. The problem is getting hold of it. I get it from Booths, but they only cover the north west. Sainsbury sell other Dorset cereals, but not this one.

I know spelt does raise the blood glucose of many diabetics, but it's worth a try with carefully timed testing.

I would say that all cereals are probably best avoided as they are all 'carby'. Hubby's DN recommended porridge or Weetabix to start the day *rolls eyes* as they are 'healthy' options. Hubby does sometimes have All Bran for breakfast for the fibre/to prevent constipation but not everyday. He does fasting 2 days a week and on others will have eggs, eggs and bacon or Greek yoghurt with some raspberries.

There are lots of choices for breakfast. If someone hasn't cooked me a full English (I wish) then coffee with cream is good for me :)

Hi Angel,
I have 2 boiled eggs and strong black coffee every morning.
If you don't like eggs it's a bit tougher, but could you have fish, like kippers or tinned fish? That's also good. Sausages would work. Please though, if you can get away from cereal you should- it will put most T2's well beyond the limit you want to be at.

Hi, there are loads of things you can have for breakfast, if you stop thinking of only traditional breakfast foods then you really are limited only by your imagination. Sausage, bacon, toms,eggs fried,poached scrambled boiled, smoked salmon,smoked sausage,cheese ham, leftovers from last night, one of the myriad mug cakes,soup to name but a few :).

You can switch around meals too. If you are not hungry in the mornings, dont eat. Eat when you are hungry. Have lunch at a time which suits you, even if that is breakfast time. I dont get hungry before 12pm. so I eat my breakfast then, skip lunch, and have tea around 6pm. Or if I wake up hungry, I have my lunch for breakfast. its up to you : )

I hadnt come across tha Aldi paleo muesli mentioned earlier in the thread but was intrigued so bought some of the nutty variety and with more than a little trepidation, experimented by eating 45g portion with some unsweetened cashew nut milk
1hour 45 mins after eating it, my blood sugar has gone up by 0.5 mmol - Result!!!!!
Every other cereal Ive tried in recent years sends my sugars ballistic
Its more like granola than muesli but very acceptable

I do rice with cinnamon or an egg with fruit. (not super sweet fruit.)
