I struggle big time with the dawn phenomina, can go bed with bg @ 4.5 and wake with 6/7 no matter what i try.
I even woke 3am had a chicken snack and if made no difference to the dp.
If i eat breakfast asap on getting up, fried egg, then get out on the bike for 1hour bingo...down to bg @ 5 and its ok through the day.
If i dont do this regime, say have breakfast and get into deskwork till 11am i'm 7/8 bg,
So most ofmy day seems walking up to 6miles a day or biking.
Does anyone else have to excercise a lot

About the same dawn figures as me , I would not worry , all your figure are within guidelines :)

I am on 100mg metformin, 500 x 2 a day so am trying to get off that. I am sure it gives me leg muscle pain and a few other odd things.

Walking is good, helps keep bg levels down and gives you a sense of well-being being out in the fresh air :)

I exercise loads, I'm cycling every working day, weekends running and I've just got a new rowing machine.I've just returned from vacation where I was running 14 - 15 km's every morning before breakfast.

If I stop exercising for a few days then I see an overall increase in my blood sugar. Another thing that causes me to wake up high in the evening is the timing of eating in the evening , if I eat carbs or fat after 8 pm then my fasting blood sugar is over 5.5 mmol (where I typically want to be under 5.5. mmol at all times.)

No thats interesting. I tend to eat latish at night 8pm around, so will check that out. Checked after breakfast and bg 7.8....went a jogged [I laughingly call it that but its a fast shuffle 1min on 1min off, and after 1/2 hour it was 5.5...hey happy dayz. I always struggle at running so looks like I have just found a new regime...

I find eating earlier really helps with fasting blood sugar so it is definitely worth a go. I still find it very difficult to discipline myself not to eat anything after 8 pm but it's worth to see a good fasting blood sugar result :-0

I'm no good at running either but I still persevere , it's like an addiction.

I used to run a lot when I was younger but mucked up my cruciate ligament so mobility is not good.

The advice I got from a consultant when I told him I wanted to get back into running was don't. In his words I would only screw my knees up and would pay for it in later life. Shame really, as I used to enjoy it. I now walk a minimum of 5 miles a day. Really pleased with my BS generally, but still get that bloody Dawn Phenomenon. I don't eat after 7PM. Anyway in answer to your question, walking does it for me. I absolutely love it, rain, hail or shine.

Hi Everyone

I just came across an interesting article on-Dawn Phenomenon. Here is the link :
In my case if I exercise before or within two hours of breakfast my BG woud go higher & hence I skip breakfast & drink tea with little cream. After two hours I walk for half an hour my BG would be between 5 & 6. You may also like to read my detail posting :

Dawn Phenomenon – Early Morning Sugar Spikes
http://conquer-diabetes.com/dawn-phenomenon-early-morning-sugar-spikes/

I find a 15 min walk is usually enough to bring BG down. Sometimes I jog a bit or if its wet then up and down the stairs for 15 mins. I tried not eating after 8 but didn't find it made any difference to DP. In fact yesterday was snacking on berries and cream about 10pm and next morning had lowest FBG that Ive had for a while.

I would only screw my knees up and would pay for it in later life.

I can vouch for that, I played rugby, a lot of badmington and "jogged" (on and off) through my late 20s, 30s and early 40s.
I'm now 63 and having my second TKR in January. My NHS consultant's first words were "did you play rugby, football, racquet sports, or jog". Three out of four wasn't bad. I think it's fair to say that the less weight you carry then the less of a problem it is although I have a friend who is tall and thin, been running for a lot of his 70 years and is just beginning to get knee problems.
There's a lot written about the pros and cons of running vs walking, but I reckon knee health is more important. My last 15 years of having arthritic knees have affected my life in many ways. Add to that the fact that the NHS might not replace knees at the age you might need them because the replacement might only last 10 years, and they don't have the funds always.
I had to find a knee that has a 30 year warranty (made by Smith and Nephew) and then find a surgeon who could fit the new knee and then pay for it myself. I think the NHS would have waited until I was in my 80s in the hope that I would die first. My surgeon just said "Your knees are totally bug...ed, lets replace them and get you walking properly again".
I watch the London Marathon on TV full of admiration for the efforts being made especially by people raising money, but in the knowledge that many, especially those carrying a bit extra, will have problems with their knees in later life. Running and jogging are undoubtedly great exercise but should carry a health warning. You're lucky that the possibility of problems later on have been pointed out to you, I wish I'd known.

You are certainly aiming for tight control. I agree about carb timing though. Any evening carbs result in massive dawn phenomenon for me. I tend to find anything with high protein post 8pm also causes gluconeogenesis during the night so I get a slower increase, and not much DP. Cheese with marmite spread on top before bed is fine though!

My predominant exercise form is weights, and I do a lot. I find it improves my insulin sensitivity, but has little effect on DP. Even walking to the station (a mile or so) in the mornings has little to no effect on DP if it is carb metabolism induced.
