Hi . I wrote a couple of weeks ago as my night fast came back 7.8 from the chemist .As i have been boarder line diabetic I went to the doctor who done a blood sample, what confuses me now is when i phoned up for results i was told the doctor had written ( not diabetes yet, when before she has said you are boarder line and not diabetic ) and my numbers were still high. The person on the phone could not tell me more. I dont see the doctor for another 10 days because of high blood pressure and to talk about results. I am not asking for diagnosis but has anyone had this happen to them, do you need more tests as well as blood to see if you have diabetes ? Sorry if this is does not make sence but not sure what to think Thank you

You will probably need more tests to confirm that you are diabetic. It is not usual to say that you are diabetic on one test unless that test comes back as very high.

even if your doctor does not diagnose diabetes, It would be worth your while controlling your caarbohydrates. It has been shown in tests that non-diabetics, whose blood glucose is consisently higher than average, tend to suffer similar complications to diabetics.[ I personally think they ARE diabetics, but some doctors are reluctant to diagnose.]
Look through this forum and you'll see a number of ways of controlling carbohydrates, ie, portion control, GI/GL control, or simply reduced carbs.
You would need a blood glucose meter to see if this has an effect. Or you might get your doctor to check every 3 months or so, or the pharmacy.

Good advice there from both Sue and Hana.
If you are bordering on diabetic then now is the time to sort your diet out and put off problems further down the line. I recommend that you cut back on the starchy carbohydrates that you eat - i.e. cereals, bread, potatoes, pasta and rice etc. That usually leads to a big improvement in blood glucose levels.

Thank you for all your answers. I have been watching my diet for ages as i put on weight very easily. I eat ryvita, crispbread plenty of fruit and veg. I never eat pastry and very rarely i will have a small piece of cake. i do not eat sweets instead i have a yougurt, do not touch red meat ,i have chicken or fish . if you have any ideas how else i can alter my diet i would be very grateful for advice. Thank you again

I have had my night fasting blood results back which were 6.1 so the doctor said i am not diabetic which of course i am pleased about but does anyone know why the difference from the finger prick one at the chemist which was 7.8 . I still feel very tired , get what i can only descripe as very light headed , my vision is blurred in the evening so that i cannot read although it is fine in the day time ,my mouth gets very dry and i am running to the loo at least once an hour. Sorry if it sounds as if i am moaning but when i go to the doctor next week she will say "your blood shows you are not diabetic as everything is ok, goodbye". Has anyone any advice "not rude please

The 'finger prick' test at the Chemist is exactly the same as the one you would get using a home meter. They are just a guide. It would also have depended on when you ate, what you ate the night before and the time the test was done.
The fasting test that was done is far more accurate and is designed to get around the variables such as diet, stress, etc. So if you are not a Diabetic, then rejoice. However, I would still want to know what is causing all your symptoms, the GP needs to make more investigations or refer you for a second opinion.
There are many things which can give those symptoms, not all of which are Diabetes related. This is why we tell people to see their GP in the first instance and NOT to self diagnose...it can be totally wrong.
A diet with less carbs may still be good for you to avoid any problems in the future if the GP thinks you are liable to develop Diabetes in the future, prevention has to be better.
Let us know how you get on.
