Ive been type 1 for about 6 months and 90% of the time i will check my BG (before meals and bed) and it will be within the 4-7 range (typically in the 5's and 6's).

The other 10% accounts for the times ive been a bit unsure of the carb amount and not had enough insulin, i which case i find my BG at around a 10 (then i simply correct). And the other time i will find it slightly high (7-12) is when ive had a high carb meal and ive checked my BG 1-2hours after eating.

Would this be bad control, enough to cause issues later in life? or am i doing okay?

I try to eat around 20g-60g carbs a meal and i avoid all sugary food unless its a special occasion which ill do a longer pre bolus for.

I often hear people say they dont control their BG well and would just like some clarification on what this means.

Sounds awesome to me. Well done.

It actually varies a bit from person to person eg people who've lost hypo awareness may aim for significantly higher blood sugars than those without.
I've linked to the NICE recommendations below

It sounds like you're there most of the time. I've been T1 for 48 years and still minimal complications (very mild background retinopathy which hasn't needed any treatment) and I'd be very happy with those results.
