What is likely to happen next

I have been diabetic type 2 for 5 years plus. Usually diet and metformin controlled. Now unexpectedly less mobile and expecting a spine op in January. Painkillers have given me terrible constipation and used lactulose initially and now use all bran and sultana which has been far more successful but means I’m eating more carbs and both cereals contain sugar. Just had blood check and now had a letter to make a double appointment with diabetic nurse in the New Year. I might add that many years ago I took part in a research programme which confirmed familiar diabetic situation and predicted eventual diabetic condition which is what has happened. My mum ended up on insulin injections and I fear I am going the same way. Is there any other options that I can discuss with the diabetic nurse? What might she be likely to suggest so I am pre warned and can be ready for? Any advice welcome. I clearly need to get sugars reduced else they will procrastinate on my spine op which is essential.

In terms of your sugars and the constipation you could try taking a magnesium supplement instead of the cereal. I’ve had a lot of success with that.

It would make sense for you to know the actual results of your latest blood test results, as they could be pivotal to your Op going ahead, or not. There are safety limits set for elective (i.e. non-emergency) surgery as high sugars can impede the healing process. If they're looking a bit "toppy", you could have the chance to maybe impact that in the coming weeks.

If you have been on Metformin and diet control, there are generally quite a number of options, prior to considering insulin treatment. Such options could be tweaking what you're eating and drinking, through to topping up your meds with something a bit stronger, and of course both combined.

In your shoes, I would want to know the actual numbers for my bloods. You should be able to get those from your surgery, or if you have online access to your records, you may be able to view them for yourself.

Good luck with it all!

Hi. There are various treatments as laxatives that can avoid the carb content of commercial cereals. I would look for high fibre foods/supplements that aren't part of high-carb breakfast cereals.

If you do not want to use laxatives you could consider milled flax - a couple of heaped teaspoonfuls each day either just with water - or sprinkled over yogurt or similar may assist.

Re blood sugar issues - i think those need to be discussed with medics
Re constipation - have a google for low carb chia puddings - chia seeds are packed full of fibre and absorb fluid at an incredible rate to make a gel like result. You can add all sorts of flavours ( my current favourites are coconut, peanut butter and banana flavouring chia pudding and coconut, lemon, blackcurrant and passionfruit chia pudding) -add whatever flavour you fancy, they are all high fibre and low carb as long as you dont start adding sugar / maple syrup etc
