What is Linseed and why have I bought it?

As the header says... Is it low carb? What actually is it? I'm assuming i read something somewhere and bought a packet of the stuff, forgot about it and found in the cupboard tonight... Tried googling n it's just telling me where I can buy it from! If it's all good, what am I using it for please? x
 
Watching for replies with interest, i've bought a few things after reading of them on here and haven't a clue what to do with any of them
 
Yes it's low carb - also known as Flaxseed. I have it on my yoghurt, but it has many uses.
 
I put it on my fruit, speinkled over veg, anything really. It has very little taste. It us so beneficial for my stomach though.
 
If it's been in the cupboard for a while, it might have gone off. I've given up buying it as it always seems to be rancid.

Put it in soups,stews,on salads,yogurt.
 

Sometimes I make 'bread' with it it's lower in carbs and because I have Coeliac I can eat this. The bread is quite dense in texture, but not bad.

Burgen bread, is made of it with soya. It has around 9 carbs a slice and is great toasted.
It doesn't bother my blood glucose levels.
 
Sometimes I make my own 'bread' using Linseeds/flax. It's gluten free and lower in carbs, quite a dense loaf, but too bad. This is the recipe I have used :-

Basic low-carb bread recipe

Method:

  1. Combine all dry ingredients and mix well
  2. Lightly beat the eggs and mix with oil
  3. Combine dry and wet ingredients
  4. Spoon the mixture into a greased loaf tin
  5. Bake at 190C/375F/Gas Mark 5 for about 35 to 45 minutes (or until toothpick comes out clean) depending on different ovens.
Nutritional informationAssuming 10 slices are made from the amounts above, per slice:
211 cals, 2g net carbs, 18g fat, 10g protein
 
What is linseed ...? It's good stuff, and should be making it's way out of your cupboard, and down your throat... As Robert's said, it's also known as flaxseed, and it's high fibre, low carb., and full of omega-3, vitamin B, antioxidants, etc. It comes in a "standard" brown seed or a lighter, golden one, which I prefer the taste of. It's best bought as a seed rather than milled as it can go rancid. Keep it cool (e.g. in the fridge) and in the dark to preserve it. I actually buy mine milled and it lives in the cool in a store cupboard in the garage until I need a new pack which then goes into the fridge. So far it's not gone off!

I sometimes sprinkle it on my yoghurt and berries, or on parmesan cheese crisps, but usually use it in baking - about half and half with ground almonds for savoury muffins and cheesy shortbread /scones. Or you could try some of Robinredbreast's low carb bread.

Hi I haven't always used it, last time I didn't, Mrsass ( love your name lol) You can buy it in some supermarkets, on line and probably health food shops. I

I often buy Xanthan Gum in Sainsburys. Its with the FreeFrom gluten free food. I get Doves Farm. Sometimes it is hiding a bit on the shelves so ask if you cant find it

I liked both Mrsass and one time I only had 3 eggs to use, so I would say with most recipes they are adaptable, the price is around £2.00 in supermarkets, I got mine from Asda last year. Good luck
 
It's got lots of omega 3 and is a brilliant gluten free source of fibre if sluggish bowels are a problem.
 
Last time I bought linseed oil was to rub into my cricket bat .... that was a loooong time ago.
