What tablets are you on as well as Metformin

Evening campers,

On Monday morning I have my first diabetic review since I started low carbing and shrank to a shadow of my former self. I'm hoping that my HBA1C reading will have improved (it was 10 last time so you may never hear from me again if it hasn't).

I am on a Bolus/Basal insulin regime and whilst I have been taking small doses of the long acting, I stopped taking the fast acting about 3 weeks ago.

My aim is to try and get off the insulin altogether. I also take 2 x 850g Metformin (not SR). I used to be on Gliclazide before the insulin.

Since I only have 20 mins with the DB specialist, I'd like to research some other tablet drugs that I could move back on to.

So what are people taking to complement the Metformin? You don't need to be an expert on what it does - I just want to do some background reading over the weekend.

Hi swimmer. In my opinion as a complete non expert the next best are ones like Januvia. They work passively like Met so they don't stimulate insulin production but work by stopping your blood take up the glucose. Whether or not they are strong enough to counter coming off insulin I don't know.

I know getting prescribed Januvia is supposed to be a post code lottery as its quite expensive.

There's a good page on the http://www.bloodsugar101.com/ site. On the homepage you'll spot a link to a drugs summary page and the guy ranks the drugs and gives you a pretty honest opinion.

Hi. I had Gliclazide added to Metformin and even on max dose it doesn't help me much as my pancreas appears to be knackered. Glic can be very helpful, however, if you have a responsive pancreas. When I had Januvia (sitagliptin) added it made quite a difference to my spikes and is less aggressive in the way that it works compared with Glicazide; it stops an ezyme shutting off the pancreas too early. Yes, Sitagliptin is relatively expensive but appears to get results for many people. I would be wary of the glitazones as they can cause water collection and affect the heart.

That's useful Daibell,

Out of interest does anyone know the relative cost of Januvia against Basal/Bolus insulin ?
