I have tried a number of times to work out how to ask a question on this forum. I guess today I just got lucky and pressed the right button....here’s hoping I am successful.

I am type 2 and absolutely floundering about what to eat. The searches I make on line just end up trying to sell subscriptions etc..the frustration got to me so I just ignored diabetes all together and kept taking the metformin.

is it me am I totally coming at this from the wrong angle? I feel like I was diagnosed, given meds and ....bye!

Diagnosed, medicated, given the boot... Did we have the same endo? ;) Really, this is how things are often handled. Or, as the case may be, not handled. At all.

https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html <-- this'll give you some basics on what to eat and what to steer clear from. Keep it up and you'll be rid of the metformin and have your diabetes in remission fast. There are things that you can pay for that are actually worth the money, like: This forum's website has the Low Carb Programme, which I think is still currently on offer. It helps to have support like that. There's Dr. Jason Fung's book, The Diabetes Code (Lifesaver!!!!). And there's dietdoctor.com, but a lot on the site's free and you don't have to be a paying member to benefit from it. That kind of weeds out a lot of snake-oil, should you be inclined to part with cash. But if you're not, now you know how to ask questions here, the answers to which are free! ;) And the link to the Nutritional Thingy'll get you started with sorting out what groceries to get. I do advise you to invest in a meter, as they are invaluable, so if it comes down to a choice.... Go for the meter. (Get one with cheap strips, as they're where the costs are). All in all... We can't process carbs out properly. So if we cut those, we'll see improvement. It really is that simple. Oh, and if you're googling stuff to make, try adding "keto" in the search bar. That'll give you meals that are low in carbohydrates and won't spike your blood sugars. (Try it, there's even keto cookies! :) )

If your doc did the usual thing he/she probably also put you on statins, even if you don't need them. It's one of those "That's what we always do" things. Statins raise blood sugars and have one heck of a list of side effects. Just mentioning it, to be on the safe side. On low carb I could ditch the statins, (which I didn't really need anyway, but the doc okayed the ditching then) which is a good thing because the joint and muscle pain was intolerable.

If there's anything you want to know that isn't covered in The Nutritional Thingy, give a shout!

Just been flicking through soapbox and then saw yours. Have written down info re a book I am interested in. Called diabetes weight loss cookbook by Giancarlo caldesi..info on forum interesting. Note I am bored with what I am eating, don't need to lose weight I suppose..so try to look at that forum in 2019..that book written for type 2 (type 1 since 3yoa, now 54 years later - just goes to show .. WHAT TO EAT..)

Hello and welcome,

You've been given a great link by @JoKalsbeek so that is a great place to start.

I agree that the first thing to do is to invest in a meter and plenty of test strips. At the beginning you will be testing very regularly. Testing is the way to work out the effect different foods have on your blood sugar levels.

The second thing is to read around on this site there is a lot of good information here.

Ask questions and feel free to vent- it is a lot to take in at the start but trust me- this site is awesome and there is light at the end of the tunnel. there are many success stories and you could be one of them in the future.

Good luck.

Hi. Many of us have been down the same route with GPs and if they do give diet advice it may well be bad advice. You need to have a low-carb diet and have fats and proteins to keep you feeling full. Veg and non-tropical fruits are fine. The Metformin will be helping a bit but the diet is key.
