What was your fasting blood glucose? (full on chat)

Just got back.
Tired.

The roads were empty initially, all these cars still parked outside houses. I noticed some traffic lights weren’t working and then crossing lights not working. It made me feel the apocalypse was nigh.

Then as I got near the retail park i had in mind, it was nearly full at 8 am , only a few car parking spaces left.

I got one, got my mobility scooter out. And went to B&M. No toilet rolls, but i don’t want any anyway. To packs of kitchen rolls left after people dived in. Got the last two. That was good, because yesterday I refused to pay the overinflated charge another shop was trying to charge me. These were just 99p each.

No tinned meat for love or money. But I got cat food, treats, and litter. So that was sorted. At this point tinned dogmeat is looking an attractive option...

So, not much at B&M.

Then I went to HomeBargains. A bit better there. I found some Big Soup which I like and doesn’t raise my blood sugars. So half a dozen cans of those, the shelves were full of them. No tinned meat again. Then i saw loads and loads of those packs of 3 Branston baked beans (which I love!), so i got 6 of those. Everyone else was going for Heinz. So that was my haul from HomeBargains.

Then went to Farmfoods, there was absolutely no one in there, in comparison to Sainsbury’s and Aldi on the same site which were totally packed (I didnt go near either of those, I wouldn’t shop at Sainsbury’s even if i were starving). Anyway at faarmfoods they were stocking spam on the shelves. I asked the lady to pass me two. She said i could have more, but I couldn’t do that, there were so many pensioners on foot in that retail park, there is no way i could deprive one of them of vital food.

Then I went to the £1 shop. It was empty. That was a surprise. There was a notice on the door asking customers not to clear their shelves but leave some for other customers. I found loads tins of pek there, so i bought 3 tins. I just cannot bring myself to buy more than 3 tins of things, I have to leave some for the next person.. i also bought a few sweet treats at Poundland.

Then it was back to the car, but on the way was a factory outlet store. They don’t sell food but I went in. And guess what in the corner of the shop were three fully stocked small shelves of some essential foods. I got a tin of ham there, and 3 tins of fish in olive oil. I would have liked more ham, but i had to leave it for the next person.

Then back to the car, so put my stuff in. I am on my scooter. I am tired. And this woman comes up and insists on helping me, getting my bags in the car and my scooter in the car. Then she gives me a hug. Social distancing doesn’t exist. Everyone was friendly and kind to each other this morning. People were chatty and helpful to each other. An old gentleman was confused what washing powder to get, so this lady next to him patiently talked him through what was on the shelves, and helped him choose (I am assuming his wife wasn’t well, and he had not done shopping on his own before). The whole of this morning was like that, extraordinary kindness between total strangers.

On the way home i decided to fill the car up with petrol. But at the Esso garage, more than half the unleaded and super unleaded pumps were locked, only the diesal ones were fully functionaing. Was it just a delivery that was overdue?

I had noticed when i drove past when i went out that the hand car wash place was empty, no customers, and when i came to the fuel garage, i passed it again, and the forecourt of the hand car wash was dry. So i just had this wierd thought. I just thought to myself, I will go in for a car wash and make their day! I drove over to the car wash, and these delighted East Europeans leapt out and energetically began cleaning and washing my car. So cheerful they were.

Very limited English, but enough for me to understand. I had locked the car doors so they wouldn’t open the doors and clean inside as they do at this car wash.. but they are yanking at the doors and i am shaking my head no and trying to say it doesn’t matter. But I ended up unlocking the doors, and they cleaned inside and the windows inside the doors, very cheerful all the while. He couldn't open the boot, it is a wierd boot opening which floored me when i first got the car. He was quite upset he couldnt open the boot to do his job properly, and so i ended up getting out of the car, where i had intended remaining socially isolated, and showing him how to open the boot. Hilarity ensued at the wierd boot opening. Finally they asked for £7.50 (it used to be £5 still at Xmas), but that is still cheaper than the other car wash down the road where they don’t do such a good job and charge £10.. so I gave him the £2:50 change (from my tenner) back as a tip. He actually said to me ‘Are you sure?’ And i said yes. His eyes looked very grateful and there were tears in them. Why? He must have been having a hard time financially. I assume.

So, I have had a rewarding morning. The British spirit is still there from wartime Britain, and these East Europeans I include in that.

I am shattered.

4.6 today. Reflecting bolognese sauce on a bed of buttered, peppered cabbage.

I've sussed out its every man for himself in superstores but small shops, well, you wouldnt even though anything was happening! And people still pottering around here.

I'm like a dog with a bone with anything that happens that really shouldn't be happening. I have to read everything I possibly can to try and 1) get my head around things 2) forward plan 3) any other business!

I see other countries going to draconian measures but not here. Yesterday's speech by Boris didn't go far enough. Its Paddy's day and the pubs in town (some, one in particular... Irish bar) are rammed. I'm heartbroken to see this. Selfish. Money orientated. Yes I get that businesses need to continue where possible. But the masses congregating imo is irresponsible. Restaurants are putting out messages/emails that the 'personal space' rule is being dealt with, tables spread out, that is something, but they will be in lockdown shortly I expect so why didnt boris insist on closure of cafes, bars, clubs, theatres etc. I read that the theatre performers arent covered by their insurance unless closure compulsory.

But good news on the horizon te possible vaccines from several countries. Hope it's not fake news. Still months off but a light at the end of the tunnel non the less.

I've got a new mobile phone. Setting it up. I need to warn everyone in my contact list that random calls/texts/gifs etc WILL be received for the foreseeable future ;-)

How horrible of her. I wish all the people she wants to socialize with would tell her to just stay at home. It is heinous to have her sort of power over other people.

And I’m lucky not to be in A&E. That poor man abandoning his shopping tipped me over the edge.
Spoke to my bro in Ireland earlier and they have drive thru testing, one person at a time in the chemist, others queue outside 2 metres apart. Soon getting the military to police queueing outside supermarkets to allow so many in at a time. The nursing home where my SIL works has a system where designated crews work on each floor, arrive and leave through different doors in an effort to isolate each floor if someone gets CV. Big charity effort taking off to feed essential workers. Los of plans inc burying/cremating the dead the same day. And what are we doing exactly? Trying to buy loo rolls.
This is a humongous challenge for any Govt but Boris (surrounded by talentless yes men) is just not up to it, lets face it!
 
@gennepher I as exhausted just reading about your morning. As for not over buying to deprive someone else I am not surprised by that at all. Hope you and Popeye have a good long rest.
 
Hugs and virtual high-fives to all of you dealing with other shoppers. @PenguinMum Good for you for telling that woman off.

Between all of you, and our Activities Director calling me this morning just to see how I'm doing, I feel encouraged to go out and buy some groceries. I am glad to hear that some people are still getting out and about and living a modified-normal life. The Act. Dir. said she is not calling everyone in the building, just people she was thinking of, and that made me feel good and less isolated. After all, there are about 300 of us living here.

Can Boris do anything like Trump and Pence are doing, helping small businesses financially to cover financial losses of workers being out sick or having to turn away customers?

I agree with every word PM I did watch the daily briefing from him however decided not to watch anymore with him...so confusing he bumbles & faffs I find him totally & completely inadequate it's scary in fact the whole cabinet...just popped down the post office to post my paperwork the queue was orderly a couple of feet apart and some waiting outside to ensure distance between us...did you see the interview with his father honestly Stanley Johnson was so awful you can see where gest it from...we're doing all we can & my neighbour and I have a plan if either of us need to isolate we'll rely on each other.

Not wishing to enter into a back and forth, just to point out the company you're quoting was offered a deal to work out of their Boston site if they share the results with the US first, no idea how much the deal was worth but you've seen the claims. There are more than 25 verified accounts of Trump pushing to obtain world rights and given the sudden departure of its CEO (see below) I would suspect something fishy

"The offer arose from a March 2 meeting at the White House that included the chief executive of the German firm CureVac, Daniel Menichella. President Trump briefly attended the meeting and Vice President Mike Pence, who heads the White House coronavirus task force, was also there.

“We are very confident that we will be able to develop a potent vaccine candidate within a few months,” Mr. Menichella said in a statement on the day of the meeting.

But four days ago, CureVac announced that Mr. Menichella, an American, was leaving the biotechnology company, which he had headed for two years.

The announcement gave no reason for his sudden departure and said one of the firm’s founders, Ingmar Hoerr, would succeed him. It thanked Mr. Menichella for a variety of accomplishments, including “the recent start of our coronavirus vaccine program.”

On Sunday, the company issued a statement in Germany describing its vaccine work. “CureVac refrains from commenting on current media speculations and clearly rejects claims about the sale of the company or its technology,” it said."

So the guy who headed the research program is offered money to sell and then leaves the company with, I'm guessing here, much of that info in his head. Be interesting to see who he goes to work for next.

I saw an article online yesterday about the situation in Italy. It is horrible, reminded me things I have read about medieval plagues. I will not quote it here as it's too much of a downer. Some hours after reading it, and still feeling the shock, I was watching TV news last night and they had a "happy upbeat" story about the situation in Italy, showing people on apartment balconies playing music and singing to their neighbors, joining in an exercise class with the instructor out on the terrace, socially distancing themselves but still "happy together." Having read the online article previously I had huge admiration for their being able to still reach out to their neighbors ... but, as with most "news" stories, I wondered which one to believe.

Ireland getting the military in reminds me that I've been wondering if the same thing will be done here. Some "news" sources are talking about martial law (one senator called it "Marshall Law" -- ever heard of spell-check, hmm?
It's been one of my fears about this virus all along. States canceling elections, taking away our civil liberties ("all for our protection"), if they get in the military to police shopping, there goes the Constitution out the window. We may all come through this plague with our lives intact, but will we ever get our liberties back?
 
This ruddy virus is causing me to grow up way too quickly. I've just signed up for online grocery shopping with ASDA. They can't deliver until the 28th mind but I have enough in to last, just thought I'd get tinned stuff from them and save me carrying it for a mile

I've always shopped in local shops as I can't handle going into supermarkets and only got to use Aldi recently. However, the online choice in tinned products is very good so I ordered two months worth, the poor chap will put his back out.

It's all very exciting in some ways. People learning how to be antisocial and thus removing the stigma for folk like me, needing to find hobbies and stuff, will the world ever be the same I wonder?
