Thoughtful Beverage-Stirring Thursday? I just realized this morning that stirring my coffee north-to-south mixes in the powdered "creamer" much more effectively than stirring it clockwise or counter-clockwise.

@DJC3 -- How many strips have you left for your codefree. Must be frustrating to know that the readings can be so inaccurate. With respect to higher than expected HbA1c, I would go with daily blood sugar readings over HbA1c test. My HbA1c is also much higher than expected (about 7 to 8 points) and my meter should be reasonably accurate. I have tested my meter two times against lab values and it was spot on.

Hi Ziggy I still have quite a few left as people have been kind enough to give me them when they’ve swapped to different meters. I don’t think it’s just the meter, I think I really am running higher than usual and I’ve put on 2kg since Christmas ( not during Christmas oddly) so I’m thinking there is some insulin resistance going on. I need to tackle it before it gets out of hand. It seems to happen every 2-3 months, no idea why.

@Bubbsie I agree with @karen8967 you look fab in the new avatar. Sorry about all the hassle with your surgery yesterday and that you’ve now ended up with a cold. Stress definitely lowers your resistance. Keep warm and drink lots of lemon and ginger tea.

Thanks DJC...I may have gilded the lily a little this morning (exaggerated)...I was a little snotty but feeling better now just a little bit sniffy is all ...done all the shopping...the fire is lit...having another sneaky coffee.putting yesterday behind me....chicken stew for supper...yum.

I wanted to ask a rather delicate question for those of you who fast.... (I'll also post it in the fasting forum)

Does anyone else experience extra windiness when fasting? I don't have any pain, discomfort, cramps or bloating, it's just quite noisy on the days I fast (not so much for intermittent fasting). It’s isn’t really a problem but it isn’t socially desirable.

I've been eating low carb for 7 months now and I don't experience this effect after vegetables like cabbage. I don't know it's the fasting or the fact my internal "plumbing" is different than most people's - I had a extended hemicolectomy (the upper 1/2 of my colon removed) for cancer related reasons 2 years ago. (No, I don't wear a colostomy bag as I had the top part removed). However I’m not windy at other times, just when fasting.


Anyone else out there experience this when fasting? Are there any others who've had part of their colon removed?

I am also in the same boat, awaiting correct diagnosis, I am also 26.

Don’t get too disheartened, things will get better .

I’ve been finding what I eat is having little impact on my bloods recently. For example I can eat low carb and have high bloods of say 13/14 but then this afternoon I ate a mini chocolate Easter egg which a colleague bought me and my bloods are 7

Oh it's so nice to 'meet' someone in the same boat! When do your test results come back? What were your glucose readings on diagnosis?

My story is a bit weird...

Basically I had been feeling dizzy for 3 weeks and the doctors kept telling me that it was stress at work. I ended up going to a and e and when they did my obs they noticed sugar in my urine. When testing with the finger prick my level was 18.

A couple of days later my hba1c came back at 103. This was 1st November 2018. I was put on 2x500mg metformin a day. That then increased to another 2x500mg metformin a day (so 4 in total). It helped my levels to a certain extent but I have also reduced carbohydrates. I went down to about 50g a day but was still struggling with levels being between 12-15 most days.

I then saw a consultant on 3rd January and he put me on a slow release insulin at night. My waking levels have started to come down now and I average about a 10 (still too high but better than before). I was scared to go on the insulin, but glad I did as I feel better. Although I think it still needs tweaking as I’m still too high.

In the meantime, as I am 26, low BMI of 21 and otherwise healthy they have done c peptide and GAD tests which are back and I have appointment with consultant on 15th February to discuss them. These tests look to see if type 1 / 2 or 1.5. MODY is something else they want to look at because of strong family history of diabetes.

It can be very frustrating this illness, especially if you have none of the other ‘associated’ issues. It seems to take a long time to get a correct diagnosis if you are someone in the same boat as me, but you will get there!

Have you had your hba1c back yet? And is your BMI normal? If so I would strongly push for the c peptide and GAD tests.

I think I had both of the tests done on Monday and have another appointment this coming Monday. They seem to have fast tracked me as my levels were so high - I went to the doctors because since quitting smoking I couldn't get off the toilet weirdly - so I had tests for everything my doctor could imagine and the one that came back worryingly high was blood sugar. Similar levels to you - 100 and then 97 on second test by GP. Original appointment for diabetes centre wasn't until March 11th but my doc was amazing and got me an app at the hospital to fast track me in one of their 'hot clinics'. Now due to them being worried that I am type 1 the diabetic nurse that came to see me in the hospital has managed to get me an appointment at the centre for this coming Monday. I feel stupidly lucky that everything is happening so quick after reading your story, it must be hell waiting so long to know what is happening
I'm also 26 with a BMI of 20. No family history other than great nana got type 2 very late on in life, which is why they're a bit confused I think.
I m now on the same as you were initially - 2 x 500mg metformin a day. But I seem to have gone back to not being able to get off the toilet which I've read can be a side effect. This had stopped from cutting out sugar as soon as the word 'diabetes' was mentioned, so infuriating that it's now back because of the meds...
How many times do you have to inject? This is the main thing that is scaring me, I'm so petrified of injections I just can't imagine doing it to myself. They tried to get me to start it straight away on Monday at the hospital, I broke down completely and they agreed to leave it till next week when we have proper diagnosis. It's all so much to take in, I'm struggling. And everyone I tell simply says "At least it's a managable condition! It's not the end of the world!" Which really isn't helping me mentally right now.

Nixi can be overwhelming...people say the things they believe will make you feel better...trying to offer you some comfort when you probably want to screammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...scream away...there are plenty here who will listen & support you who have been through it themselves...lest hope you get the diagnosis confirmed ASAP...good luck.

Haha thank you so much, this place is a God send isn't it?! It's so nice to know I'm not being unreasonable and that everyone feels frustrated at this point. x

I can empathise on the injection front Nixi..at the time of my diagnosis I had several other conditions in hospital with a nasty infection...also a DVT which means I take warfarin...in addition to that I also had to have injections in my stomach which they expected me to do myself...I baulked at the prospect however since I had intravenous antibiotics for fourteen consecutive days the nurses did the injections for me...everything about this journey is so alien to us...when you start out it seems like a nightmare...you will get there it just takes time.
