Whats the right diet.. Bbc2

Fat wasn't mentioned at all! I think they couldn't bring themselves to admit as diet experts that they have been wrong for decades. If you look at the BBC2 programme website and the day by day diets they keep mentioning low-fat this and low-fat that so we still have a way to go.

There is a book to accompany the series which can be obtained on the BBC website.

I've skimmed through it and this is what it has to say on fat for the three types of dieters.

"THE RIGHT DIET FOR FEASTERS

..Try to reduce the number of calories in each gram of food eaten and increase the amount of fibre. This can be done by eating bulkier foods. You can do this by eating less fat and sugar while increasing the proportion of vegetables and fruit that you eat and choosing high fibre or wholegrain types of carbohydrates..."

"CONSTANT CRAVERS
RECOMMENDED FATS ON UNRESTRICTED DAYS

On unrestricted days you can include some added fat in your diet, either to cook meat, fish or vegetables or as a salad dressing. Try to follow the Mediterranaen diet by using fats and oils that are rich in the heart healthy monounsaturated fats.....

GENERAL STRATEGY FOR UNRESTRICTED DAYS

Try to fill your plate with vegetables, one quarter or more with carbohydrate and the remainder with protein-rich food."

EMOTIONAL EATERS

No specific reference to the type of diet to be followed, but there is a recipe for low-fat chicken and mushroom pie.

I do not detect a shift in attitude towards saturated fats.

Disappointing....

I saw some if it last night and thought it was interesting, especially the guy who is very over weight and has a 14 year old son who doesn't want him to have an early death :(. I think it was he who ate the19 small bowls of sushi, when they were all told they could eat what they wanted on the buffett conveyor belt, but were secretly being filmed. At home his wife said if SHE was with him all the time, he would eat sensibly because she would be watching him

So looking forward to seeing how they are doing at home tonight, I do hope they can stick with it with the right motivation and willpower :)

:hilarious: Have you tried reminding him how much that's costing him in tyres? :hilarious::D

Yes I have!!-lol!!
He was driving around with 2 tyres with nails/tacks in them as well!!
I told him that everytime he mounts a kerb it damages the tyres (prob suspension too). He really should have been on that programme last night.

This year I am going to get him a xmas pres of driving with an ex traffic cop that now does a refresher lesson!!

I was just scrolling through my telly menu looking for tonight's programme and found this:

Channel 4, 8pm "Weighing up the Enemy". Andrew, a huntsman, goes up against vegan dog groomer Karl to see who can lose the most weight. Will the financial incentive and opposing viewpoints prove a strong motivator?

I would rather stand outside in a puddle than watch that :banghead:

I watched the programme and it reinforced to me that there are many factors as to why people gain weight. Those three categories were scientifically/psychology selected.

Interestingly the emotional eaters were advised that they need support, demonstrated by the absailing down the lighthouse.

When people tell overweight people to eat less and diet it shows how useless this advice is. There is more to it than that for most overweight people.

I gained weight simply because I tried to follow the official "healthy" high carb / low fat diet. I'm pretty sure I don't have any serious psychological issues with regard to eating - it was physiological.

I always had a healthy appetite! Indeed my mum often asked if I had hollow legs!

I don't think it was psychosomatic or a medical problem. I just really enjoyed eating!

In 2001 i was told to look after myself better, so I stopped smoking and went on the healthy 'eat well' diet!
At that time I was around 15stone.
After misdiagnosis (2009) I was approaching 17 stone.
Even though I was dieting and working and walking about 10 miles a day (ish).
I still don't think I had a problem. I just ate what was put in front of me. No problem!

After low carbing weight has fell off me and the good health has returned.

My last weigh in my weight was in August 20th 13st 3lb.

Consultant again on Thursday and hoping to be under that. (12st) ish!

Good luck, I''m the same really. 30 years ago, non diabetuc @ 8 1/2 stone, now 8st 13 lb, so gained a little since becoming diabetic. Even though I have always been hungry 24/7 not in childhood, but about 18 to 20 years, but put up with it and still do, because I thought everyone was like this

Aren't we?

:hilarious: Cost us £135 in Salisbury the other day for a new tyre, after we picked up a screw in the tread on the way to town... Should have been £200 but the guy took pity on us along with the '0' vat.
Still costly after xmas though.
So you'll save the money for the lesson with the cop :hilarious:
Definitely.. Got the cops details.. His birthday Mar may even bring it forward!!

The only company car I had after meeting him, he bashed it on my 2nd day of working for new company-and forgot to take the driver details!!

Oh what a moaner I am!!! He has got good points honest!

Watched this tonight.... My hubby and 2 friends have got a bet on for who is going to be lightest in weight in July this year. Hubby lost 4 st.. They reckon he will put it back on. He 12st 6lb from low carbing... The other two since last July one has lost 1st, the other nothing. The nothing loss goes to gym, circuit training and badminton every week but continues to absolutely stuff himself with carbs...
The incentive is that the least loser pays for all 3 familys- 9 of us to go out for a meal!! Can't wait.. Hubby still 2stone lighter than his 2 friends!!

Amazed at one of the guys diets for 3 weeks still had 4000 calories a day!!!!

The programme tonight on channel 4 also quoted the national obesity forum.. Didn't even know it existed!!

That sounds like friendly competition :) The TV programme sounded more like a race. Maybe it was ok, but I couldn't watch it...grrr.

Watched the BBC programme tonight (well half watched it). I must have missed the bit when they had their brains removed. Coco pops and coke?
