What's your worst food?

Hi All,

I'm T1 I have read lots about what food to avoid. I'm relatively healthy but will be honest and say I do have treats - occasionally a small portion of chocolate (less than 15g) or ice cream with the appropriate amount of insulin as dessert.

The only thing I completely avoid because they make my sugars spike is takeaways - I find them super difficult to carb count and pretty much always get it wrong so I feel rough.

I know it's different for everyone and really individual but is there anything that you avoid?

From the forum I've realised I've been making some big mistakes (thinking low fat Greek yoghurt is best when it seems full fat is the preference, I also rarely eat cheese but it seems quite popular).

Thanks :)

I can't think of any bad foods really. I do find very sweet desserts a pain to bolus for (eg toffee pudding with caramel sauce) so I tend to,avoid those.

Takeaways vary - fish and chips need an extra bolus sometimes to deal with the fat, and Chinese seems to have added sugar in quite a few of the sauces so I usually add on a bit to my carb count for that and it's fine.

Bear in mind that lots of the diet advice on the forum is from or aimed at Type 2s who have different needs than Type 1s @tiredoftrying2017 There's no reason why you can't eat low fat yoghurt. In fact, I love Skyr - which is naturally low fat.

Thanks @azure, you sound very much like me!

I avoid desserts when out just because of the calculation unless the restaurant has a nutritional menu.

In fact my takeaway choice if I do is fish and salad, maybe with a few stolen chips from my husband

That's good advice, thank you. I love Skyr too. The blueberry one from Lidl is in my fridge as we speak!

What a refreshing reply. This is in no way a criticism of the low carb devotees, but there are so many fans here that you can get the feeling of inadequacy if you're not below 50g a day. I want to be a LCer but just find it so inconvenient. I know from experience that it's generally easier to keep a smoother BG level if you do observe the rules, but it's just so hard.

Despite spiking, I keep my Hba1c in the low 40s, and just think, can I put myself and wife through additional stress for marginal gains. If any.

I was sent a link from my DSN to a paper suggesting that short term spikes are not as harmful as previously thought. So I'm pinning my hopes on that for the time being.

There's no reason why eating low fat yoghurt or not eating cheese could be seen as a mistake for a type 1, unless you find bolusing for low fat yoghurt particularly troublesome, but as carbs will be clearly listed on the pot and it will have a standard GI action I can't imagine that to be the case.

You're not making mistakes because you aren't following low carb high fat advice aimed at people with type 2.

I almost never have a dessert of any kind -- but that is mainly a result of living without them for so long on first 1 injection per day ( 1970's) , then 2 injections per day ( 1980's ) -- that by the time we got to the mid 1990's and I started doing MDI -- I could not be bothered even thinking of desserts.
about once or twice a year I will indulge with a mini magnum ice cream
I never have a dessert in a restaurant -- always starter and main :)

I eat everything else though in moderation -- fish and chips about once every 3 months , the same for either an Indian or Chinese takeaway. Pizza definitely -- but usually only on holiday in Italy.

It does take a bit more planning to eat these things involving pre-bolus timing and splitting doses
( but this has been made a lot easier since I started pumping )

i eat whatever, whenever i like ;)

i'm not overweight or anything tho bc i'm just not a lover of junk food and stuff

i'm used to eating a lotta carbs and i also been thinking of cutting down on them a lil, just makes it easier to control the BG and it's less risky in terms of hitting hypos / hypers.. now all i need are some good alternatives that i actually like eating ;)

That kinda made me smile - is true that I do the LCHF thing and I do try to keep to under 30g per day as a T2 - its also true that I regularly fall off the wagon by being tempted with other things . I've been reading the book " Think like a pancreas" and I have tremendous admiration for the effort your guys have to go to to keep thing in check.

My own guilty pleasure is fish and chip shop fish - I can happily lose the chips, but if someone took away the batter I would chop their hand off - I try not to do it too often ......

I doubt there is much need to feel inadequate if you are not achieving under 50 g - on average I expect that many of the under 30g people don't achieve 50g all the time either me included ( 185 g yesterday ! oops)

toast and cereals/milk send my bg high yet the toast was my fave

"Worst food"? Doesn't that depend on your definition? Worst to raise BG, put on weight, lacking any nutrients, leading to tooth decay, ...?
I have always followed the approach that nothing is bad if eaten in moderation. I just eat a variety of different foods every day. One day, this may be all veg, another day it may be sandwiches and pasta, another day I may have ice cream, I may have a very low carb day, I may have a high carb day ... but I try to vary it to ensure I get different nutrients.
Maybe I am lucky because I am slim whatever I eat and my HbA1C is reasonably low but I worry about the guilt around ocassionally eating something considered "bad".

Wow! You are very disciplined!
I gave up all treats for Lent as a personal challenge and I managed it, just need to find the willpower again and you are right - once you get into the routine you don't miss it!

I did avoid pizza in Italy which was a challenge! Always struggle getting pizza right.

my dietician can't believe I don't eat desserts -- I have never really missed them they have been out of my diet for so long :)
I do get a bit envious sometimes when watching friends eat them in restaurants --but I can't be bothered trying to figure out what exactly are the carbs in it -- and I Absolutely HATE going high ever after eating -- so puddings are a NO for me.

There's a few foods that I avoid mainly as I don't like the taste, but on the whole I try and eat a balanced diet without excluding any food groups.

Much like @himtoo I'm not really a dessert eater, I'd rather have a starter and main than a main and dessert. As for takeaways, we just had a Chinese takeaway 2 weeks ago and it was very nice too, we tend to stick with the same takeaway so I know the portion sizes and from past experience no how to bolus for the dishes. Fish 'n' chips we don't buy too often and mainly have some when we are away from home, but most Saturday nights we sit down as a family and have homemade chips using Maris Piper potatoes, Maris Pipers make the best chips IMHO.

Baked beans............ I weigh 'em, I count the little buggers, I stick to the same brands and yet maybe 6 or 7 times out of 10 I end up either sky high or low low.
Strange thing is I'm not a great lover of them, just the odd occasion when breakfast out comes with them or the only food in the house is 2 stale bread and a tin of beans, perfect for legendary beans on toast.
Just can't get it right with 'em:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

I used to love baked beans on fried bread. It was the frying that made them seem like a guilty treat - not the beans or the toast. I'm not that fond of them otherwise- maybe one day if I ever do get down to my ideal weight I might give myself a treat and try it- just the once !

Earlier this year I re-introduced baked beans to my diet after 3 years of not eating them. Using my meter I can confirm I am absolutely fine with a large spoonful of them with my fry ups. In fact, I see better post meal results with them than I do with the same quantity of tinned toms. Also, fried bread - but only half a slice - is far better for me than toast. The fat helps. I only have this very occasionally though.

I know without checking that home made rice pudding will be my worst food as far as bg goes. I will really, really miss it in the depths of winter. Just thinking of that golden caster sugar... Gulp!

Pizza! Though I can get away with a slice or two of toppings if I leave the crust. If I hav some it'll just start the ball rolling so I don't do that often.
