When low carb may not be enough

So please look after your knees, I wince when I see people running with bandages on their knees, if the knee hurts, there's a reason, don't make it worse.

Goodness, I so agree.
No point in flogging yourself through a punishing exercise regime only to store up injury problems in the future.
We all think we are indestructible, don't we? plus the whole 'no pain no gain' idea.

Thankfully almost all of us learn better, in time. Although usually not until we have some damage to show for it.
 
Some may need a gastric bypass because of calories in!

My calories in equals 1200 - 1500, most days. Sundays might actually get up to 1800. The Harris Benedict Formula suggests that I should be consuming 2300 calories if I was confined to my bed and 2760 calories when just doing the normal everyday stuff like shopping, cooking, housework. Even more if I was in the gym every day. So in theory I should be fading away. Unfortunately there's no evidence of that so maybe the Harris Benedict formula isn't correct for everyone and all of the time!

Do you know how many calories somebody who has had gastric surgery is meant to consume? At High Wycombe General they recommend 1200 calories for someone whose had gastric surgery (band or bypass). There was a time when the were recommending liquidising chocolate and ice cream to get the calories up. I understand they have changed that advice.

I've been vacillating about getting a bike and have opted for a decent static bike. Struggling to put the stupid thing together almost as we speak as it were. Just have to finish the decorating the living room, then decorate the front room, lay power cables down the garden to the man cave, clear out the garage, get my little boat ready for the summer . . . . . . . . . . .

Ever so slightly tongue in cheek - I think I need more staff so that I can allocate more time to exercise. LOLOLOL

I have taken the exercise comment on board, anything I might say is just a poor excuse for not spending more time exercising.


I take on board the whole thing about exercise, although I no longer keep a time sheet, I seem to be on my feet most of the day and the first opportunity to sit down is to eat at lunch time and then again at dinner time. I know shopping, cooking and housework don't count as exercise, but I at least get some exercise walking to and from the shops.

In my little world, "decorating the living room, then decorate the front room, lay power cables down the garden to the man cave, clear out the garage, get my little boat ready for the summer" would be excellent exercise on its own without the need for additional, and why don't you count shopping and housework as exercise? I do. Cleaning windows, pushing hoovers about, especially on stairs, cleaning floors, carrying shopping bags back and forth is all exercise. In my little world, anyway.

I agree with you but I've been hard on myself because I keep thinking I'm doing something wrong and by not counting too much on everyday chores as exercise, that's another form of burning calories that don't come into the overall equation and if they did, they'd be on the minus side anyway.

Today, typical day really, been moving furniture to get more decorating done, back is giving me a lot of grief so I'll do some measuring up and some skirting board staining, I can sit on my backside to do that. My knee replacements will allow some kneeling, just not for long.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Just because some people on the forum run, cycle, go to the gym, generally tire themselves out with organised exercise doesn't mean it is necessary. You can achieve exactly the same with the sort of daily activities you do in your own home. It is always possible that burning off too many calories is working against you. Your body may somehow be compensating and storing fat. As far as I am aware, you can't lose weight by exercising. It may well assist general health and muscle tone, but not weight (in my humble opinion). It has frequently been said that a short 20 to 30 minute walk is all that is necessary.

When I look at calories burned for different exercises I am surprised. I believe better muscle tone should help with metabolic problems. I've got a really good static bike, just struggling with the fiddly wires that go to a screen on the front. I use to do a lot of cycling (150 miles a week) but I'm genuinely plain scared of getting killed, hence the static bike. HID can use it as well so killing 2 birds with one stone.
 
Looks like you may have the lean burn model of homo sapien engine installed :)My son in law eats like a horse and is thin as a rake. Not fair is it?

My son in law eats like a horse and is thin as a rake.

I know a few of them, one in particular doesn't exercise and is known in friendly circles as "the hoover" because of his amazing ability to finish everyone's meal off. If he thinks you've finished he's in there like a shot. The plus side is that as a group of diners we don't waste food.

the heavier one is on a bike and alike the more calories one burn... so at the beginning there is that advantage at least for people starting to use their body from an earlier sedentary lifestyle...
and the more you build up your muscles the more energy they do use also when you are not using them all day around , so in that respect it does pay to build up ones muscles as one can eat more and not create as much fat from the same amount of eaten foods calorywise

Its tough going from being so active to struggling to keep any activity.
Portion size for less activity is definitely needed.
I can stay stable on a tea plate of mushy veg and a smoothie.. if I can eat more, even a few nuts and I will increase my weight. I have needed to increase my weight and done well with the drambuie double cream coffees!! But it has definitely highlighted to me just how much your body learns to cope with a set amount of foods, tge activity levels etc...
I too have thought it a feat to be able to decorate our new small bungalow having moved the day before my big op... and it definitely made me analyse how my body reacts to portion size as well.
I'm maintaining my weight now with just a very small circle of food on a main teaplate and either a homemade smoothe or omlette.
I'm not scientific at all ref sugarsurfing, ketosis etc but just identifying my own bodies reactions and making changes for it has been key for me.
I'm sure you will find your way to kick starting it in the ways you are wishing...

Some is better than nothing, of course if one likes to go to the gym or to play basket, go for it, and for sure one burns calories. But I don't like to go to the gym or make exercises. I prefer a brisk walk instead to thake the car or the public transportations, so I do it. I also like to use a bike but not in Turin, because the quantity of ill behaved people both on other bikes and cars...

Oh yes, the hazards of cycling . I need to get back on my bike. We live in a village and I thought I was fairly safe on the roads here.. I forgotten about the local stables! I skidded in a pile of horse poop, hit a lamp post and ended up in a holly bush !

I the countryside, in the small town where my parenst are living I absolutely love to ride my MTB, especially on gravel roads, but even on roads with cars I feel more safe than in the city...
 
We are lucky to have over 100 km of bike paths in our city .but we have a long winter
So we go walking in the malls trying to make 10000 steps
 
Wish I was brave enough to try riding a bike again mobility scooter is OK but not the same. But have found that if I walk short distance and then rest then repeat and so on I have managed to cover a reasonable distance over several hours. It's time consuming but does help if a task is too big or too hard then break it down into smaller tasks..
 
Hi @DavidGrahamJones you have mentioned in a few threads that when you increased your consumption of dairy, you put on a lot of weight. Have you ever tried cutting out dairy completely to see what effect that might have? Might be worth a try. My own experience has been a big drop in hba1c and nearly a couple of stone off in a year with little effort.

I'm annoyed with myself really because it was the dairy that I increased to eat more calories and of course I hear such great thing about LCHF. I think I can safely say that it was a bad plan to increase my fats because it's now not so easy to drop some of them. The cream has gone no problem, but the real yoghurt (no added sugar) is proving more difficult. I shall have to be ruthless and cut dairy all together. My Nutritional Therapist has been on at me about dairy for a while now, I'll have to knuckle down and return to proper low carb low fat that I use to manage, no problem until somebody (GP and most people who follow WW and other similar diet organisations) said you need to eat more. They were wrong in my case.

As you can imagine the whole thing is a nightmare because doctors don't always take you seriously in the first place, but at least my present GPs are pretty good and they will talk to me (last GP just said Rome wasn't built in a day). They have to talk to me, the amount of documentation I show, very impressed with Libre reports.

If you enjoy yoghurt, Alpro plain is very tasty, dairy free and only 2.1% carb.
