Where do I go from here ? Cholesterol levels higher.

Hello. I think it's a bit of a tightrope walk as we try to decide how to balance our diet. My overall cholesterol level is about the same as yours and I don't take statins. Both my HDL and non-HDL are high. Most of the fat I eat is good and if I eat less I will lose weight, and I'm already skinny and have lost a lot of muscle (I wasn't overweight to start with). If I eat more carbs I will gain weight but my blood sugar will go up. I've decided to carry on as I am until my next HbA1C test and take stock. Well done to get your BS down and good luck on your journey.

Sounds like we are in the same dilemma ! I am not overweight either so I'm afraid if I up the carbs I will put on weight and put my blood glucose up so as you say it's a balancing act . I would rather have blood glucose under control and worry about cholesterol later !

@connie104 - I appreciate you posting your old blood scores, to try to give us context into what may be going on. On that basis we're all assuming nothing in the breakdown has changed.

On that basis, I would only encourage you to actually take any action (without seeing the latest numbers), if you really want to anyway. My lipids always come to what my GP and I have agreed to call an "inconveniently high total", whereas the breakdown is rather good.

It took some time for she and I to agree to this appreciation and terminology, as I took her through the AP two-way lipid educational programme. I was feeding her reading materials and YouTube for some time.

Sometimes, it just has to be done. ;)

Been to see the surgery pharmacist today and to collect my latest blood results.
All I got on copy of results was cholesterol 7.1 when I queried this with the receptionist she said I only got total cholesterol as it was not a full lipid test. So what a waste of time !!! I have an appointment with the doctor on the 8th Dec so will ask him then if I can have a full lipid test .
The pharmacist has suggested I go on Ezetimibe for my cholesterol as I can't take Statins. Has anyone any experience of this drug ?

Hi Connie your slight increase in total cholesterol could be due to your hdl going up on low carb. As you say you need to know your full lipid panel. Your trigs could have come down. It's any bodies guess.Best wishes Derek

No personal experience, but from what I've read it reliably reduces cholesterol - however, in clinical trials having lower cholesterol from taking it has absolutely no benefit as regards CVD outcomes.

I tried ezetimibe on recomendationfrom consultant. Research consultant I then saw after told me it was not worth taking.....I came off it.. my trigs etc good though.. my cholesterol went bad with hieavy saturates from cheese n cream and belly pork etc (all those foods were killing my stomach anyway-just didn't know at tbe time). Then I wwnt to the healthy meditereanean fats only. Worked beautifully until I had to take an anyi cancer drug... and eating less healthy fats.. ie I can't eat olives anymore or much anything but I do throw in an avocado into my smoothies.

Hubbies cholesterol did pretty much same (but worse) than mine with the heavy fats... his though has improved alot from having more homemade curries (no rice and few carbs) but always made with coconut milk. He also eats salmon/tuna/cod 3 or 4 times a week.

Thank you @donnellysdogs and @ lindy51 for your replies. After researching this drug it appears to cause similar muscle problems as Statins on some people worse in some cases so I am going to decline it and try and lower it through diet changes . I think it was the high fat part of LCHF diet that has caused my problem so will concentrate on this. Next blood test 31st January so time will tell .
