Hi there, my 2 yr old daughter is starting on a pump next week and I wondered if anyone can advise me as to which weighing scales is the best. I also wondered if there is any good reference book for carb counting. I am going into the hospital for training beforehand but wondered if anyone here could advise me.
Regards,

Depending which pump I think depnds if you may get a free pair of rosemary conley scales. I got a pair sent to me by Accu check, and there was a form to fill in and send them in the big info pack you receive with the pump.

However, when mine arrived they didn't work, and I had already purchased a brilliant set from Lloyds Pharmacy (not sure if I can give names) called nutriscales. They are a lot firmer and sturdier than the non working rosemsary conley ones I was sent from accuchek. They say not to put rechargeable batteries in them, but I do and they are so easy to use, I love them, although I still haven't got hubby to use them yet...still working on that for when he cooks.

The booklet in the nutriscales is larger print for the carb codes too. Got to confess for the first time ever I even weigh my lettuce, cucumber and garlic for carbs, and it is suprising just how many are in these items. When I was told about carbs 25 years ago I was told not to count lettuce or cucumber or onion, but now I do it, my carb boluses are so much more accurate than ever before.

My hospital also gave me a book called fat and calorie counter actually published by Roche so check with the hospital before you start, as you may get everything you need if your hospital and pump people are as good as mine.

Any scale with a digital display would be the best as you can be more accurate with your dosing plus get one that you can reset and add to for each portion so you don't have to use a million different plates!

I use the collins gem calorie counter book (don't get the carb counter one, the calorie is better from a diabetes perspective)

Thanks for the replies - we are in Dublin so I probably wont get the same products as you guys do through your hospital. We looked in Argo*s and some of them are quiet expensive so I just didn't want to go and spend a fortune if I don't need to. Thanks again!

Hi - most digital scales are quite accurate but the Rosemarie Connoly are quite good.

I personally do not recommend the collins book - as a dietitian I am not sure it is accurate and based on UK food tabels.
Although a bigger book the calorie and carb bible is much better.

A new book carbs and cals is a"picture " book and can be viewed at www.carbsandcals.com - it is very visual!

I have the set from Lloyds mentioned above and found them to be excellent for the money (I paid £15.99)... here are the functions:-

Product Code: 8277550

Pre programmed with 400 food items.
Can add different foods together to give the nutritional value of a complete meal.

Measures your foods:
• Weight
• Calories
• Carbohydrates
• Cholesterol
• Sodium
• Fat
• Saturated fat
• Protein

I bought my digital kitchen scales out of Tesco's for £10, made by Salter they are nothing fancy but weigh the food just the same.

I use a cheap set of digital scales that has a tare function bought from the supermarket. I looked at buying one of the carb/calorie counting scales but I figured by the time you trolled through the menus it would just take too long. A calculator is quicker and eventually you learn many of the carb contents of things eaten daily.

I just did a list of the carb codes for the items that I regularly use-lettuce, cucumber, garlic, onion, tomatos, peppers and I keep it laminated and on top of firdge. Everytime, I just refer to this rather than trolling through the leaflets.

Hi

We have digital Salter scales bought off Amazon that measure in 1g units. Also measures in ml which is really handy.

I've got the Collins little gem book on carbs and I rarely look at it. I have a DAFNE on that our dietician gave us and it it far more user friendly.

My son Erland is also 2 and we're hopefully getting a pump in November. He's on Levemir/novorapid at the moment.

Good luck

Annette
