Type 2
Hi, I've been type 2 for 5 years with reasonable control on 4 Metformin daily. My most recent blood tests last week showed the best results ever for me. I've lost almost 3st, BMI 27, HBA1C 45 (6.3), cholesterol 3.8, much lower triglycerides and everything else normal. My GP actually said that my HBA1C figure was below the treatment range. However the only thing that's changed is a reduction from 4 to 2 Metformin. The statin and BP tablet remain (BP 138/70). I was hoping to be diet controlled. Why would my doctor still think Metformin is required?

Why don't you ask him/her? I did and said I didn't think I needed them any more and he agreed. Good luck, it sounds like you're doing really well!

What were your previous HbA1c results? Have they gone down significantly.. You are still really in the Pre-diabetic state so that may be why he wants you to stay on meds.. Personally if you want to stop taking them then stop. There's no obligation to take them. See how it goes. Or as @Pink_Minx says ask the doc..

Thank you for taking the time to read & reply. My HBA1C last year was 57. I'm going to take the matter up with the nurse next week at my review (feet check, etc). My appointment with GP was for meds review - although he was amazed with me, things were a bit rushed!!

So that's great... you are going in the right direction..well done. It's probably because you are doing well that the appointment was rushed.. Personally I only took metformin ( reg and SR) for 3 weeks and due to my reactions to it decided never again. Hit the LCHF diet with a vengeance. I refused the statins and my BP was at the high end of normal so was never given anything for that. Yes check with nurse and see what they say.

Thank you. I'm determined to get some more weight off and try for even lower readings. Re. Metformin - I too have had horrendous side effects but since sticking to low carb and ditching the rubbish things have improved - but still want to be rid of them once and for all.
