Why don't some people get it?

Then a problem shared might not be a problem halved, but I do get it. Don't give up hope x

@serenity648, have a look in the Weight Loss section. I've started a thread there, and there are some other useful ones that I'm reading up on at the moment. What's in a name...binge eating, overeating, food addiction - could we be talking about the same thing I wonder? Feel free to send me a private message x

PS I cant get to your profile or see how to message you privately : (

Ah, let me have a look at my settings. x

I have some serious food addiction issues, so I am planning to speak to my mental health team on Tuesday to find some support on continuing to deal with my food addictions, and not getting anxious, which makes it all harder to keep on top of. I dont want to change addictions, I want to stop using food as a prop in the same way as other turn to drink or drugs.

I am not excusing myself. I know why I have these issues, it is collateral damage from certain life experience, and I am still alive. But neither is my problem an excuse to not take care of myself with this diabetes.

I get the feeling, although I havent found an actual thread on here about food issues and addictions, that i wont be the only one having to tackle these two things at once. I had thought i could continue to slowly sort out my problem relationship with food, but diabetes has brought things to a head.

The open way people have talk on this thread has reassured me a lot. As has the non-judgmental and constructive thoughts expressed here. Thanks.
Welcome to the forum @serenity648! I think a number of us have been where you are now, and found relief from the cravings by switching to LCHF. Good luck with it, let us know how you're getting on, and ask lots of questions! Why not start your own thread about food addictions? I think you'd get a lot of interesting responses!

I am starting low carb tomorrow. I he only been diagnosed a few days, havent seen anyone yet, I got a phone message from the doctors and told to make an appointment with the nurse. I see her on Wednesday.

Yes, carb craving are happening a lot. Really crazy, out of control cravings. I didnt know carbs can do that, I thought it was me being stupid.
"Really crazy, out of control cravings" - this is how I felt before I was diagnosed T2. Switching to low carb really dialled it down and I was able to think straight again and calmly make better food choices. Good luck with your new way of eating today x

@serenity648 wishing you all the best with low carb and I really hope it helps you.

I used to get horrific cravings and used to binge eat but I can honestly say hand on heart since I have been strict LCHF these have really died down to the point my husband had a Twix last week and in a moment of masochism I asked if I could sniff it.......all I could smell ws overbearing sweetness and a chemical undertone and it was frankly all a bit bleugh!

Hang with it and if you need support, advice or simply a "this is a bit hard actually" just shout.
Lindy x

That's a bit worrying.
There are no chemicals in a twix.
You didn't let him eat it did you?

I'd rather not have soya anyway, isn't it virtually all GM? Each to his own!

Soya flour,
Soya and linseed bread,
Livlife bread
Lidl high protein rolls
Dark chocolate,

all seem popular on here with many.

Yes, I understand that, and it is very much down to personal preferences. I definitely don't want to eat 'frankenfoods' - don't mind if they sell it, so long as it is clearly labelled. So, is linseed GM I wonder? We actually eat that, flax crackers, lovely!

Diabetes is a long journey, when I was diagnosed in October 2013 with bg of 33 and hba1c of 111 I was shocked. I had always been fit and active and ate healthily (yes the NHS definition of healthily) ie whole grains, brown rice and pasta etc. I attended a day course which was of some use, but still advocated the eat well plate. I have learnt everything from this site and don't know how anyone can manage without a bg monitor. It has taken me some time to really get my head around low carbing and I am sure I will learn more over the years ahead - I find it all quite fascinating and empowering. I think I am fortunate in many ways, lucky in my home life and family who are very supportive, fortunate to be able to use the internet and find out information, and yet even so it has taken a while to get where I am - and I am not quite where I want to be yet. I guess we are all different, but given the correct tools and a willingness to take control is what really matters.

Maybe after a weekend away (eating out lots) and now full of cold I've answered my own question! Diabetes management can be tough and it's just constant. Some people just choose to ignore it.

I'm having breakfast in Carluccios and ate the toast ... haven't eaten bread for almost 2 months! Am sure it will affect my Big later but I'm waiting for new strips so I might not know how bad

Maybe I just need to get over this cold and then I'll be back on track - comfort eating for me always involved carbs!

Find something new to comfort eat I like a hard boiled egg with mayo - or an avocado with prawns, instantly satisfying and very tasty. You can defrost a cupful of prawns in the microwave in an instant and I usually keep a hard boiled egg or two in the fridge.

And, eating out, be precise with your ordering, state exactly what you don't want, if the bread basket, or toast, or whatever turns up I scrape it onto my side plate and send it straight back to the kitchen before it can tempt me!

Once or twice a year we go to an amazing restaurant where artisan breads are cooked in a wood burning oven - hubby and me share our only bread roll of the year (usually olive or walnut, salivating at the thought) but the restaurant knows that's the only permitted carb - and does us extra greens, and cheese board with celery not crackers. Never say never, except for added sugar, but make the carb treats worth it! And VERY occasional - that way you'll know you continue to 'get it'! You're doing great!

Hi Julie, have you ever had the GAD, ICA and C-peptide tests done? Your characteristics sound very similar to those of people diagnosed as T2 but who happen to be LADA, so it's probably worth investigating!

Cauli cheese is now my comfort food of choice. Mashed or lumpy, with cheese and cream instead of milk and flour. Quick, easy and microwavable.

Since I made the 'switch' the few times I have tasted potato mash I have thought how much more I enjoy cauliflower mash! lol.

@Brunneria I need to understand how to make LCHF cauli cheese as I love it - but don't have a microwave (never used one).

@AtkinsMo I'm getting used to say I can't have carbs due to diabetes and honestly most restaurants are wonderful. It's just when you are tired and grumpy (man with a cold!) that I can't be bothered - also spent the weekend saying 'no
glucides' as I was in France.

At the end of the day I know good diet is worth it, I'll be back on track soon!
