Why is being on Insulin viewed as bad?

I agree with doczoc, but the issue of Moderators actively participating in discussions is one for Administrator to resolve, regarding the clear conflict of interest in such scenarios.

To those of you who were offended by my post I apologise. If you do not fall into the category then of course the post was not intended to be a criticism of you. I notice though that you all have something in common. Again not a criticism, but you are all relative newcomers to this forum and so you most likely will not have seen the numerous posts we have had in the past from people on insulin who do regard it as the means for them to make absolutely no allowances for their diabetes. We do our best to try to persuade them that they need to make changes, but the advice often falls on deaf ears.

You may want to bury your head in the sand and pretend that this doesn't happen, but unfortunately it does. My own brother-in-law is a prime example. He is an educated man, a chartered account and, despite pleas from the rest of the family and the experience of his own father who died at 59, blind and after a succession of amputations, has the attitude I described that insulin allows him to have whatever he wants.

And Nemesis, not that it's any of your business but my BMI is 24.8, which is of little relevance because BMI is not a particularly good measure of diabetes.

I am not a newcomer on the board so feel that my comments were valid

I must agree with nemesis on this.

We're not all porkers who think our use of insulin means we can eat what we want when we want and I take offence at Dennis's remarks
Fuggsy,

Read my post again and please tell me where I suggested that you are a porker who thinks they can eat what they want. You wont find it because I didn't say it. My point was aimed at those who have poor control and use their insulin as an excuse for an unhealthy diet, not at you. And as my post was not aimed at you, why are you so insulted by it?

It was implied.

rash generalisations are always going to cause offence.

Fuggsy.

Dennis has answered you. That should be an end to it. You have had your say. Please do not seek to prolong this. You are entitled to your opinion, now can we please get back to helping people on here instead of semantics.

Ken.

Moderators have opinions, and in our case they have a vast amount of knowledge, experience and desire to help. They won't take flak, and really, why should they? They devote great amounts of time on this forum for the benefit of the community.

There is another option, and that is for us to hire a professional team of impartial, non-diabetic moderators who keep all debate 100 per cent on track. Which would you prefer? Which would allow the forum greater life? Which would actually encourage debate that genuinely pushes treatment forward and helps people? I know which, and I'll ride with it.

We are not going to be neutral automatons, just like we are not going to pretend that everything is always 100 per cent OK. There are problems in the world, we wish to fix them. Hope that makes my/our position clearer.

How curious that there wasn't a bunch of furious complaints to this

What gets to me is all the news about DT2 about how large people are at risk and it is giving diabetes on the whole a bad name. I feel that T2 suffers have brough it on themselves and people like me and my father who have T1 arent getting a bad name, because we get the condition due to a rubbish diet and being over weight and it is totally the oppiosite.

Er, no, not curious at all actually . . .

Wow, dont fall out guys! I might wish I hadnt asked.
But as a type 2 on insulin because of other medical reasons, and not because I'd failed I do understand how touchy we feel over the brought it on themselves attitude. I was a fit lifeguard when mine started and not obese but reports in the media always put it as if all type 2s are obese.
Thanks for all the comments.
