why is it always assumed type 1 diabetics are overweight

This is the kind of ignorance that gets on my nerves. As a staff nurse and fellow type 1 also known as juvenile onset diabetes; then insulin dependent diabetes; we are NOT the overweight ones as a general rule. I have nursed numerous diabetic patients and in total fairness 80 - 90% of type 2 (maturity onset diabetics ) are the obese ones, which has contributed to their diagnosis, hence diet controlled for the initial 3 month simply aiming to reduce their body mass index and return to a semblance of normality. Unfortunately however, many (not all) are reluctant to take responsibility for their own health and so go on to require further meds and eventual insulin therapy. I am not just surmising here I see it and work with it. Type 1 is an autoimmune process which individuals have no control over.

My trap is firmly shut on this one! Too delicate and sensitive for me. It's a literary mine-field. (Z-z-z-z-z-zipppppp!)

Congratulations, samick, just for starting this thread!

It's not just type 1 diabetes that some people have no control over.

Winds me up no end!

There is so much in the press these days about obesity and type 2 diabetes. Yes, people who are overweight are more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but it does not mean that each and every diabetic is carrying a few too many pounds. Not every type 1 is overweight. Nor is every type 2.

There is a great deal of misunderstanding. People are not aware that there are two types on diabetes. They do not know that each has different causes. They don't know that obesity is not the only cause of type 2.

I am type 1 and I get so wound up when people assume that I must have been diagnosed because I had a bad diet.

Anyway, I will stop ranting. We can't expect everybody to understand the complexities of diabetes. I sure don't understand all the other various diseases in the world so why would I expect somebody who hasn't got diabetes to understand my 'illness'.

It's one of those things, I guess. I shall continue to get annoyed about it but, at the same time, I shan't judge too much :)

I am type 1 (overweight) and have been asked a lot if I am type 2, usually by healthcare professionals who haven't read my notes
