Hello all,
for afew years now i have suffered very heavy periods, i am in the process of keeping a diary to tell my gp and hopefully refer me to a specialist for treatment.
Anyway, was looking on the net the other day and it was suggested that diabetes could be a cause for my problems-- i thought it might be my age etc-- never in a million years thought that it could have something to do with diabetes.
Has anyone else heard of this? i thought i would ask the board this question before i go to see my gp, as she is very good a refering me to my consultant/db nurse at the drop of a hat (tells me she no expert in this field and feels better at refering), which is good cause you always get the best attention.
Anyway, i look forward to hearing from you very informative, clever people
Many thanks
D

I've noticed over the years that my cycle has changed (regularity) when I've changed type of insulin. Impossible to prove because we can't go back 5 years and try again with another insulin at the same age, but I'm convinced it makes a difference to this, so I think it could affect menstrual flow, discomfort etc. I think I read somewhere that diabetics (specifically T1s??) tend to reach the menopause earlier.

soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
I was diagnosed post menopause, but had real difficulties with carb cavings. These have gone.
I sailed through the menopause symptom free and probably was developing my T2 at that time. so it's not all bad

Non-insulin injectable medication (incretin mimetics)
Having suffered from problem periods, ovarian cysts so bad they thought I had an ectopic pregnancy, moods going all over the place and cravings like you wouldnt believe I really feel every month at the point of literally packing it all in. Lord knows what stops me and it just about felt the end of the world when I was diagnosed with diabetes....it is still not a walk in the park every month and they are now testing me for fibroids  it seems it never rains but it pours.
Just on a total downer sorry

S'ok lilibet, apparently we can take HRT (I asked the consultant). Personally I plan on staying young forever and I refuse to suffer through the menopause if I absolutely must have diabetes!!!

Hi Coopergang

Have you had your thyroid tested at all? Thyroid dysfunction can cause a lot of period problems and is more common in diabetics than non-diabetics. It's an easy test for your GP to do if she hasn't already.

I hadn't heard about diabetes causing heavy periods before - just that insulin requirements might fluctuate with the hormonal cycle - bit I'll bear that in mind as I get the same issue.

Thanks Goji. You might have solved a question for me. I think I'm having throid problems. My periods are irregular, painful and cause alot of headaches. I'm also cold all the time and shake alot especially my hands. I'm also bloated alot, appetite increased and always hungry. My sleeping habits have completely changed and I sleep for 8+ hours regularly when I only used to get 3-4 hours. I've got an appointment to see my gp on January 2nd..specialises in diabetes...so hopefully I'll get some answers then. Fingers crossed.
