Worried about going undiagnosed!

Feeling stressed! I’ve had 2 gestational diabetes pregnancies. The most recent baby was born 1st June. I had my blood test after and they said everything was normal. I had a HBA1C prior to having her and scored 35 which I think is 5.4. I had another one on Friday as I’ve been having diabetes symptoms - thirst, frequent wees, tired all the time and headaches. The result was 39 which I think is 5.7 which they said is normal. The last couple of weeks or so, I keep feeling like my blood sugar is dropping. I go shaky, sweaty and my heart is racing. They just keep saying my HBA1C was normal but something’s not right. Reading online the HBA1C might not be the best especially in someone with recent symptoms. I just feel like something’s being missed. I’ve got another doctor’s appointment tomorrow and I’m just scared of being fobbed off because they think I’m just being crazy! Anybody have any experience of being diagnosed/misdiagnosed with similar?

it is in higher end of normal... they can´t give you a diagnosis if you are not in the area of a diagnosis.... but you yourself can do a lot not to become full-blown diabetic by taking the total control of how many carbs you are eating daily, and by exercising more .. or only going for much longer walks ...
when it comes to diabetes you are statistically in a higher risk zone... but all you can do is to do your best... and keep up optimism... even we who have the diagnosis get a better life if we don´t let us sink down in deep depression because of this unwanted curse

if you haven´t taken the low carb course here in this forum , then try taking it or read the many links to lower carb eating style and fabulous recipies of low carb foods...

maybe something else is wrong, your symptoms can come from a lot of other conditions , please don´t give up finding out why you have these symptoms... but also have in mind if your great worry could be causing some of the symptoms...

you are young I guess, but I have some of your anoying symtoms many times a day only from being a menopause woman

maybe also ask to have your thyroid function measured (considering your heart racing )

Thank you. I’m new to the forum so not sure where to find anything yet but I’ll have a look. I was just wondering whether a glucose tolerance test would be more accurate than a HBA1C test seeing as my symptoms have only just started. I’m praying to God it isn’t so I can do everything in my power to try and prevent it but if I already am diabetic, I’d rather know sooner so I can start dealing with it.

well, a glucose tolerance test is actually taking a load on one's system ... I don´t think a glucose tolerance test is healthy in any way... and knowing you already have had gestational diabetes ... then you know you might be vulnerable ...
a HbAc1 is an okay view of where one lies I think...

That’s a very good point. I am high risk so as you say having another glucose tolerance test when I’be already had a couple is just loading my system up with more sugar. I just want to get to the bottom of my symptoms. I presume if I was diabetic and it was uncontrolled, at a repeat HBA1C in say a year, it should get worse.

Do you still have your glucose meter from pregnancy? Can you test your levels?

No I don’t unfortunately.
Pity, it would have given you an idea of what your levels are doing.
See your doc and talk through the symptoms and if you get no joy perhaps get a meter and test. It could help set your mind at rest or flag an issue early.

It might help if you could obtain a meter and test strips for yourself - there are some which can be got mail order and not expensive - If your doctor did give you one it might have really expensive strips which would perhaps put you off testing.
When you have symptoms you could test, or before and after a few meals, just to see what is going on now.
The Hba1c testing is an average over several months, if your symptoms are happening now you need to see what your blood glucose is at that moment - it might at least reassure you, or perhaps give you something to show the doctor.

Thank you for the advice. I’ll see how I get on at tomorrow’s doctors appointment and I’ll take it from there x x

Well I went to the doctor and he said as my HBA1C was normal and there was nothing abnormal showing my urine, I should just put the idea of diabetes out of my head. He thinks a lot of my symptoms are linked to my anxiety. Someone in a Facebook group I’m in though said their HbA1c was normal but some fructosamine test or something diagnosed her as type 2. I suppose I could keep going round in circles worrying. I’m just going to eat low carb I think and see how I go.
