Worried

Hello,

I have not been diagnosed as diabetic. However, this morning (no food for 11 hours) I took a glucose reading using my home test kit.

First reading 10.2mmol
Repeat 11mmol

Should I be freaking out? (I am)

What made me test?
My tongue has been tingling loads like burning mouth syndrome. A couple of weeks ago I had a day or two where I kept feeling like I needed a wee. Today I tested my urine and my ph was 5. I googled it (I know, dangerous!) and it said it could be diabetes. i therefore tested it and 11mmol

PS I should admit the test strips (medisana) expired in 2013
I have ordered new ones but I really am freaking.
My tummy is rumbling but I do not want to eat as I do not want it to go up.
Maybe I should call the local chemist and see if they offer glucose testing or if not, see if they sell the testing kits....

Make yourself some eggs and eat. They will not raise you any higher but not eating can cause a liver dump and increase your BG. By all means see if you can get a test done and then make an appointment with your doctor as soon as you can. Keep a log of what you eat and your readings both before you eat and at 1 and 2 hours after. Don't freak out. Just take things one step at a time and find out if there is a problem and if there is a problem then we can help you sort things out.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I will go and eat and try to keep calm.

I am being rather over self-focussed

I don't think you are being over self-focussed at all. It is good that you are vigilant about your health. If you do have diabetes, maybe you don't, your numbers are not dangerously high until you see a doc. Just keep an eye on things. If you have a Lloyds Pharmacy near you, they should be able to check you for free. And do keep eating. You need good nutrition regardless of anything :)

Thank you for your very reassuring message.
I will try and pop to a Lloyds Pharmacy.
Best wishes

Hi @AliceUK1 :)

No, you shouldn't be freaking out :) Using expired test strips is always a bad idea (I did it by accident once and got a totally mad reading).

If you feel you might have diabetes then see your GP for a proper test. You may be worrying about nothing so don't panic. Just make an appointment for a test.

By the way, why do you have a home testing kit? Is there diabetes in your family @AliceUK1 ?

Urine PH isn't used to diagnose diabetes, but if your urine is ever so slightly acid for whatever reason, then that might explain your need to wee.

welcome here Alice :)

yes you should definitely see a doctor if not for anything else so to have it ruled out... blood glucose can be raised by illness too , your number seems high if the test stip is reliable.. this thing in your mouth could be something else than diabetes, a fungi infection maybe .. do seek doctors advice it is bad to go around with something that puts a burden on your body but can maybe easily be treated

I agree with the other posts. Make a GP appointment but in the meantime find a local Lloyds and ideally test around 2 hours after a meal. This will be a guide until you see the GP.

My Dad has diabetes so I bought a kit a few years ago, planning to check it regularly but haven't for years. Oops!

Thanks for your message. I will see my GP on Monday and discuss it all.
