Hi Everyone
What a great forum! I was diagnosed yesterday and am still in shock. I had an HBA1c of 78 so that's that I guess!. I have also been put on amlodi[ine and atorvastatin for hypertension and high cholesterol.
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I suppose I am seeking a little reassurance, a silver cloud if you like.
I am overweight and had a great attraction to chocolate and bread. I have been looking at Professor Roy Taylor and his approach seems very positive. I realise it's still early day for me but I wondered a, how bad is 78? and b, if I get this down through diet and some meds, does having low blood sugar mean a normal life, in the sense of the damage will stop?
Thank you so much and apologies if these questions have been asked before but I'm new and a little scared frankly!

Well - 78 is not so high as some here have seen at diagnosis and still managed to get back to normal numbers, and more normal weight too.
By not eating a 'normal' amount of carbohydrate it is possible to have normal numbers, which is what I do day by day.
Some have done a low calorie diet and lost weight which is enough to sort things out for them. An increase in activity and exertion helps most people, though that was not something I aimed for, I just did as I felt so much better and more energetic.
For quite a few diagnosis was a good thing which has brought about improvement in wellbeing and life in general.

Thank you Resurgam, that does help. Like I said I think I’m still in shock at the moment even though, looking back, the signs were there.
It’s going to be a challenge but, if I’m reading it right, normal numbers means the damage stops so it’s worth aiming for.

My HBa level was 140 I'm still waiting to find out what type I have. Have you been given a definite type 1 or 2 diagnosis

My number was 74 at start, very close to yours. Went straight to low carb but not drastically so, cut out all snacking and most processed meals. No meds. Weight dropped linearly over 4 months to yield HbA1c of 42. You can do it, if you have no other obstacles. Just commit and take heart from the many other similar remissions told here. You’ll be ok.

Hiya yes all seems so daunting when first given the news. My Hbac1 was 51 in Jan 22 so lower than yours but i was in shock for days thinking this was it my life over i dank into depression and didnt want to eat as scared to go out or socialise but i bought loads books new and old and read and absorbed as much info as could and Roy Taylor book is brilliant also a cookbook by a dr and wife havnt got book to hand but can let you know if you decide in the low carb diet I decided the low carb diet was way for me Get yourself a blood tester and keep record even for say first 3 months and then clear cupboards now and restock with your new way of eating n lifestyle and you may have to meal plan for first few weeks but once you try new recipes and find what agrees with your readings you will become more confident I did this since Jan and in May my readings down to late 30s and lost over 2 stines in 5 months but weight has stalked now Yes its not a cure but judging by what i read in this forum even higher end readings can be brought down Good luck

Another 74er here! 3 months of low carbing from the end of April has resulted in my latest testing being 41, oh and I've lost 13-14kg on the way (without trying to restrict my calories). So take heart, changing our health is in our hands (and it's not as hard as I thought it would be).

Thank you to all. From what I'm reading, if you keep the blood glucose low the damage will not happen. The trick is getting it there and keeping it there. I'm on holiday for a few weeks so i have some time to learn.I will be back in touch and let you know how it goes.In the meantime thank you. I feel less desperate! :)
