A worrying report this week found that only 25% of children with diabetes aged 12 or older in England and Wales receive all seven recommended health checks each year. Around 70% of the children had type 1 diabetes.
The audit, conducted by The Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, reported that the most commonly missed checks included foot examinations, eye screenings and cholesterol testing.
Failure to receive these checks can delay the diagnosis of any complications, and researchers have called for these figures to improve.
Also this week, guest blogger Elizabeth Rowley wrote about the worldwide cost of diabetes supplies. A survey of people from 40 countries found that diabetes is a financial burden for many people, and while insulin and test strips are free for people with type 1 diabetes in the UK, there is a global struggle for many people with diabetes.
“Let’s use our collective outrage to continue to push for #insulin4all,” said Rowley, who is campaigning for the cost of diabetes supplies to be made more affordable in countries where people are struggling to simply stay alive.
