I low carb but still need insulin when im in pain, ill or thyroid plays up. Oh and when I get loose tummy from metformin or side affects from heart meds. Insulin resistance problems since I was 5yr old but just gone on insulin after 40yrs of uncontrolled sugar and obesity problems. Ive fought but some wars arent always won. Luckily I can live another day to fight again.

you are a great fighter by the way , I do admire you dear <3

Ain't life grand? Just when you thin you've reached rock bottom, you find another slough of despair to drop into! Mind you, when I read what some of you others have to cope with, I think I've probably been lucky! Wasn't feeling that way in the last week or so - had to start taking thyroxine supplement which was presumably why I was feeling pretty grotty and hopeless, then I went down with a real honest-to-God dose of flu. I thought I was dying and frankly, didn't care for quite a few days.
Since my husband died, it's been hard to find a few days together in which I felt well - no surprise in that, every time he went away to sea ours was a sick household, kids would get chickenpox or some other childhood illness and I would go down with something or other - named or otherwise. It would be interesting to know what part stress plays in the development of diabetes as well as other illnesses.
Not sure where I am in terms of diet just now - only took something solid yesterday for the first time wince 29 December. Could only manage sips of water with antibiotics - for secondary infections, not flu, No food so no insulin or normal medication just the overnight injection (70 ml solostar). BS pretty well all the time at 11.8. So, yesterday scrambled egg and tea, today avocado and tea (black tea), tomorrow, who knows? But I do have an appointment to see the Dr tomorrow and have a blood test so I'll probably have to try to eat something. No avocados left though until I can get someone to go shopping for me. Still, plenty of eggs to keep me going.

By the way, through all this, I haven't lost an ounce in weight. Odd...
Regards
Ann

I was only told not to bother trying to lose weight, that it was impossible for a diabetic on insulin.

I was told the same Ann. I was on steroids and insulin when I joined a well known slimming club. My dn said I was wasting my time even trying to lose weight and sure enough I didn't! I'm not on steroids any more and have lost about a stone doing lchf. I think the problem with the slimming club was that you were encouraged to eat lots of carbs and low fat.

I don't think my medical professionals were correct about weight loss, but it is very difficult. It may be all the other pills and conditions that prevent me losing weight, as well as my age (72) and the length of time I have probably been diabetic (maybe 48 years or so - 40 before diagnosis), mean that it won't happen for me. I have been low carbing for around a year now and in the last couple of months have reduced my meals to one "proper" meal and one snack a day, that mostly because I can't really face food any more and just had a bad dose of flu which is proving difficult to recover from. I got around to weighing myself this morning and have lost about 3 lbs down from 16st 4 lb to 16st 1 lb in the last 5 weeks of fasting and low intake. It's ridiculous! I weigh much more than either of my 6ft+ sons and I'm only 5ft 5". It's depressing really, especially when I know my diabetic nurse will have a fit when I tell her next week about my current eating.

Just saw my diabetes nurse and was amazed when she decided not to weigh me or to check blood sugar. She just wanted to chat and told me I was doing really well after I'd told her about still feeling low after flu and going onto thyroxine pills, plus massive swings from 3.1 to 20! I have been feeling so poorly that I didn't even notice hypos coming on until BS was in the 3s and my eyesight started to go. OK so having these other medical things has skewed the readings and so on - and I'll accept that I didn't lose weight because my system went into starvation mode, but she asked when I wanted to go back to see her - 3 months, 6 months or a year! They must be going for a new strategy or for a money saving policy. She did say not to worry about so many hypos - my liver will protect me. Sadly, it's my liver that needs protecting now.
I did try to see my doctor this month, but couldn't get an appointment so had to see a young doctor doing her GP practice who simply wouldn't look up the figures from my recent blood test, done at MY request by my own doctor a couple of weeks back. She did check the comments attached and told me that my liver function has improved a little -"...but it does tend to go up and down a bit, so it's not significant." Maybe something to do with the low carb diet, the milk thistle and artichoke extract I've been taking? No comment at all on that. Meantime, I'll take that as a minor success and try to get an appointment with my own doctor towards the end of the month. I did think she might have some more up-to-date ideas, being not long out of medical school. Maybe I was expecting too much.

I was told the same thing. Being told this made me feel completely defeated so I just ate pretty much what I wanted. Fortunately after a few wasted years getting fatter I read the blood sugar diet book and decided to low carb. I have lost about a stone since 1st January this year and more than halved my insulin.

I have to agree @Annb with @deb1960 . carbs hold the key to weight gain on insulin. Of course we have other ailments but if I can lose weight on insulin, anyone can. I have so many meds and conditions even endo was shocked about my 3.5st loss. I've crept on a few pound but looking to mimic jan'17 to start losing again. I'm desperate to lose. I've been confused to hell from bariatric eating advice as goes against what I was eating to lose weight, on my own.
I'm going to do a liver diet (low carb) and hope to kick start my loss again! I need as much luck as possible as weight gain will sabotage my bariatric surgery.

Seen the Liver Specialist at the Hospital today for my check up. He is pleased with my LFT results - Gamma GT is 38 and ALT is 51.
Ferritin level has dropped to 16 and have resumed as from today taking the Liquid Iron on prescription.
And my HBA1C has risen by 3 to 68 since December 2017.
Cholesterol is 3.1.

Just to update. :)
Had an Endoscopy on Monday 17th and still have the Gastritis and Duodenitis!!
Then yesterday Tuesday 18th saw the Liver Specialist and he is really pleased with my hard work (his words). My Fibroscan done yesterday was 6.7 = 2 years ago it was 10.7, 1 year ago it was 10.2.
My LFT Bloods - Gamma GT is down to 31 and ALT is down to 39. (I started a New Drug only last week and it is known to effect Liver Function)
My Cholesterol remains at 3.1.
Have only lost half a stone in weight - 12 stone 4 lbs but, I am sticking to the Low Fat Diet. My HBA1C is up to 72:(.
Ferritin level is 19 though and I am to have a Colonoscopy soon!

A mixed bag of huge positive results @Liam1955. All to your credit. Are you still using milk thistle complimentary treatment? And your weight loss must be very obvious. You aren't what I'd perceive to be an overweight person. You must be slight now? Most specialist like type2s not overweight. I'm finding.
Well done on your efforts and success. Any improvement on the fatty liver now then? I had to go severe low carb to improve mine but not sure my liver function recent results, on awaiting my op. I'm on the 800cals diet which is also low fat.

@ickihun - No, I stopped the Milk Thistle last November. I read an American article about them doing trials with Omega 3 Oil and Vitamin E. So I asked the Liver Specialist if I could try this - and he said it was OK. For the last 7 months been taking 1000mg Omega 3 Oil and 200iu of Vitamin E Capsule every day - I personally think it is taking these that has helped my Fatty Liver. I am really pleased that the Fibroscan reading was 6.7.:)
I have lost 2 inches in my waist, went out and bought 2 new pairs of Trousers to treat myself.
Having my Diabetic Review in January 2019 - and I know I am going to get a B*****king for allowing my HBA1C to go up to 72. But, eating low fat there is more sugar put in when fat is taken out. And I felt I needed to get my Liver sorted out which was/is No. 1 priority to me.
Hoping for cancelled appointment to have the Colonoscopy soon. I still have the Iron Deficiency Aneamia and have for nearly 5 years.

My Iron goes low now but I've put it down to taking lansoprozol tablets which can be a side affect. I eat beef once a week. I've ordered a meat platter from butchers for over Xmas though to give us all extra protein rather than excessive carbs.
