Type 2 Life

I haven't seen Masterchef for years, I'm always out when it's on but I'm in tonight. I didn't realise it is on on a Friday. I might watch although I haven't seen any of the rest of the series.

I had a frantic day at work today, lots of meetings, phone calls etc. The I went to the gym on the way home (was very tempted not to, but forced myself!). My husband had cooked dinner for himself and the kids but thought I was getting my own, but there wasn't a lot for me to eat so it was ham salad :(. Very boring on a Friday night! We did open a bottle of wine though, so I am feeling more mellow now...

My son got back from his DofE expedition in the lake District yesterday, He really enjoyed it despite the fact that there was a lot of snow and rain! He has now eaten his body weight in toast and nutella!

@mo53 - It's the desserts that I like to see. Yeah, we love ice cream too and got our own ice cream maker, it's simple to make and get loads to eat, but R eats a lot more than I and he is as thin as a matchstick!! It's not fair is it!:D It's on now, I'm off:)

Was so positive today and tried really hard for breakfast I had 1 weetabix with a small 200ml carton of fresh orange followed by a 30 minute walk to work. dinner a small slice of cheese pie with salad and an apple, and then for tea sausage mash peas and gravy followed by a bg yesterday 15.7, first time ever tested at the docs and then this morning 13.2 this evening up to 16.7 all meds taken as well but I suppose they are not going to work straight away and going to take time can't expect it to change overnight tomorrow's another day

Hi guys I finished my evening meal about an hour ago how long should I wait until i test? I was advised at the doctors after around an hour to 2 hours, does this semester to be the norm?
Than you x
Hi, @kjc2011! I usually test at 2 hours after eating. If I'm introducing something new, I test at 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours after eating it, to see whether or not it's going to give me a spike. Hope this helps.

After two plus years I still find this really difficult.. I know it only takes a minute.
I do the cooking, it's my relaxation after a hard day at the bench and listen to the Archers...
So want to serve up at 19:15. Two hours after is 21:15.. which tends to be in a 21:00 prog, Scandi drama/ the night manager (take your pick)...
I tend to test at 18:58 and then at 20:58 and see the trend from there... the difference in 20 mins is not going to be too great and over time the patterns will show...
In fact now is the time before "Blue eyes" starts on More4... the first episode was good, so going with it.
5.2 before, steak and salad and some red wine... will report back.

Hi and thank you for your reply it is all very strange checking bs have never been issued with a meter before would you recommend checking again then to see if it has gone down slightly I tested 2 hours after my evening meal and that was around an hour ago when I tested last x

Been to Nandos tonight, big 'un is back from cadet camp and wanted to go so I couldn't deny her ;) Stuffed myself with peri nuts, chicken and halloumi, lots of calories not too bad for carbs. Let's see what that does to my fbg in the morning??!

@ickihun I have to say I have no idea.... it sort of happened and didn't notice.... I'm sure there is FAQ somewhere.. keep on keepin' on.... :)
I think it's related to the number of posts you have created and goes like this:

0-24 posts = Newbie
25-799 posts = Regular
800-1999 posts = Veteran
2000-4999 posts = Legend
5000+ posts = Champion

Unless I have it wrong?

Hi and thank you for your advice I have had diabetes for 5 years but all the testing is new to me doctor never issued me a meter until yesterday when I went in unwell and she tested my levels and she gave me one and are scription for lancets and strips xx

Meds won't drop your numbers that far, you might need to look at reducing your carbohydrates. Although your intake would fit OK in the NHS eatwell plate it contains a lot of carbs that would spike my blood sugar. I can't have weetabix, orange juice, pastry, mashed potato or gravy without seeing a significant rise. Apples and peas would count as a treat and I have to pick my sausages carefully to be below 2g carbs each - it was a steep learning curve to begin with!!!

Hi, kjc2011!
I can relate to how you're feeling, because I was only diagnosed at the beginning of March, and was lucky enough to find this forum more or less immediately. Having tried every diet known to man for the past 50 years, I immediately launched into another one, but then I read on here about the LCHF (low-carb, high fat) plan, and started working to that - with the main focus on low carbs, rather than low calories. My BG levels seem to have stabilised over the past few weeks and are now falling pretty consistently between 5 and 6, fasting as well as before and after meals. And I've lost 12lbs without really trying!
So, working on the LCHF principle, it seems to me that the Weetabix, orange juice, cheese pie, apple, and mash could be the culprits when it comes to your readings. You might find things improve if you skip the cereals for breakfast and have sausages, eggs, mushrooms or bacon, or full-fat Greek yoghurt and fruit instead. Homemade soups or salads are good for lunch, or sandwiches made with Oopsie bread (you'll find the recipe on the forum), and any sort of meat, fish, cheese or eggs for dinner with lots of above-the-ground vegetables.
I hope this helps - and welcome to the forum! Good luck x

I think with time only one test "2" hours after is enough, as long as you are consistent in your testing to look for the responses in BG to what you've eaten.

Yes looking at it wrote down there is a lot of sugars with the drink and natural fruit then the carbo hydrates ontop of that as well with the pie at dinner time and the mash at tea wow there's a lot to think about and change

@kjc2011 - That's good you have been provided with a meter. A lot of forum members follow LCHF Diet (Low Carb High Fat) and have lost weight and reduced their HBA1C. Here is a link for you to have a look. www.dietdoctor.com/lchf:)
Just worried about the high fat part as I have angina and heart bypass 3 years ago so been told that I need to reduce my fat will have to look at it properly thanks for the link a little bedtime reading I think x

Hi again @kjc2011 I think of the HF part of the eating plan as being healthy fat e.g butter, olive oil, nuts and the fat on meats. All of us diabetics need to cut our consumption of carbohydrates, but we're all different and can tolerate different amounts of carbs. That's where your meter comes in - test your blood IMMEDIATELY before eating then Exactly 2 hrs after. The difference in the readings should be no more than 2 this way you will find out which foods your body will tolerate Recommended range for type 2s is 4-7 before meals and under 8.5 two hours after. Ideal fasting readings for type 2 is 4-7 (non diabetic 3.9-5.5) you will be able to achieve this after some time eating a lower carbohydrate diet. Hope this information helps

@kjc2011 - Whoops!! Sorry, yes you did say about the Angina & Heart Bypass. I don't follow the LCHF diet, because I have Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) I was diagnosed with Fibrosis in January and waiting to see a Liver Specialist. My GP told me that my diet will probably be "tweaked" and said to watch my intake of saturated fat, and keep my Cholesterol as it is.

Thank you and I realise what you're saying about the healthy fats I have a quick look at the LCHF Diet just been looking and getting info from there and food/ recepic ideas and give it try thank you so much for replying x

Think I will seek advice before I start LCHF just because of my heart condition I was first e for a year after bypass surgery no angina pain and no need for angina meds then after a year angina back and on meds again also taking a spring and atrovstatin daily x
