Hourly meals

As RH ers that are non diabetic, are advised by our dieticians, doctors, specialist endocrinologists to eat small meals every three hours because of the risk of hypos.
I have been asked by mine to try out a new idea, which my endocrinologist believes will give me the right balance of nutrition and help with getting enough food from different types of foods, as he believes that I'm not eating enough variety to keep me healthy and happy!
He insists that very low carb and intermittent fasting cannot be sustained and he believes that I'm ready to try very small amounts of carbs with my small amounts of food that I'm going to eat!
I've no idea how this will play out, but I've got a plan to eat as advised to eat every hour on the hour from 9am to 9pm, then fast for twelve hours overnight!

So at the weekend, I intend to line up my meals as such,

9a.m. Greek yogurt and a few berries.
10a.m. gammon and egg.
11 a.m. small Apple
12noon small bowl of veg soup (homemade) with a slice of Bergen bread.
1pm fresh ham salad
2pm Greek yogurt, berries
3pm. Ham, tomato.
4pm. Fish, haddock
5pm. Small tangerine
6pm. Small bowl of chicken curry (homemade)
7pm. Another bit of salad.
8pm chicken leg roasted.
9pm, finally! Greek yogurt chocolate 85%.

Depending on how I progress through the day, this may alter! Hopefully this will not be too much and testing throughout the day along with my active life, it should be interesting! I will be testing pre meal every meal to give me an idea of what is happening! Wether I go out of ketosis or not!

I will of course give a verdict and report how I do!
I am a bit nervous being a guinea pig!

Blimey. When do you get time to do anything else?

I've got the weekend off!

Lots of dog walks and chores in between, they are literally five minute meals, I couldn't eat a lot now if I tried! I only eat small meals now, that's why my endocrinologist wants me to try this!

Also, I'm worried that I feel no hunger or have no appetite during the twelve hours I'm eating!

Only 5 minutes to eat them, but there is still dishing up and washing up. It actually reminds me of my tortoises. They are grazing animals and eat all day, in spurts, so food has to be down for them all the time. It gets hard work sometimes. (especially as they are mucky creatures and trample all over it) At least they get a nice sleep in a fridge for 3 months every year!

You are going to have to be very careful with your portion sizes or you will be full before lunch time. If low carb and IF aren't sustainable, I would lay a bet this hourly eating isn't either.

I agree, but I'm only using the smallest plate or bowl, like a side plate, the amount I have is just to keep me going, rather tidbits than meals, snacks instead of mains!
I'm not a big eater at all, due to the fasting and my time testing, experimenting and believing that I have to eat every three hours, when I found that I didn't if I was in ketosis!

Insulin
If you eat every hour you will not allow bs or insulin levels to drop back to pre meal levels so not advised. Keeping bs and insulin levels up before returning to normal isn't ill advised. Eat three meals a day and have a few fat snacks in between. Nothing that raises bs or insulin. Just MO

Blimey! He can't possibly think that way of eating is more sustainable surely?!! That would drive me potty. Good luck and have fun experimenting though

Would drive me mad too... good luck with it noshy (Lamont) but I don't envy you!

Very puzzled as to why he thinks LC and IF are not sustainable, while having to eat tiny amounts of carbs on the hour is better... but reserving judgement til I hear how it went. :)

Will be interested to hear how it goes though.
- I could possibly do it if the carb in question was chocolate ;)

@Lamont D - Did you ask the Endo on what basis he felt your LC and IF regime is unsustainable?

He is of the opinion like most health practitioners that we must have some carbs during the day, even though we have agreed that very low carb and intermittent fasting works and is helping me stay in ketosis.
If I eat every three hours as is regarded as the best treatment to stop hypos occurring, then if I fast, then I lose the balance of regular meals and we then had a discussion about how very small meals often will give me the best way to use a wider variety of different foods to get my balance of nutrition available.
He has seen all my food diaries and noticed that I was lacking some basic vitamins and minerals because of my lack of 'good healthy complex carbs', which he reckons I need! In reply, I stated that I'm happy as I am, without resorting to eating a wider variety, as my body just doesn't like 'complex carbs' even in small amounts.
I answered that there was nothing in my bloods from my test results that indicated the lack, so why?
Anyway, he asked me to have a go, just to see how it pans out!
I just think that, he wants to ensure I get my carbs of at least 20gms a day!
Even though, I'm sure it will not make any difference!

Well good luck but I hope it doesn't screw up your excellent results.
Sounds more like an ego trip for your endo.. but then again I'm a cynical old git.
Please let us know how it goes..

Are you going to test through all of that? I would be fascinated to eat the identical foods both in my "usual" eating patterns, and as requested by your Endo, to see if there was any different trend. A Libre could provide a fascinating insight over the course of the experiment.

Personally? As someone who doesn't snack, all those eating episodes would just fry my brain! How is anyone supposed to get anything productive done, that isn't preparing food, eating it, or clearing up afterwards.

I'm no domestic goddess, but that regime would fry my brain. :blackeye:

Interestingly Nosher I asked him if I could fast intermittently say 8pm-12pm and he said no it was no good for me. Since I saw him last November ( I arranged to have my hb1ac tested before I went so he had some data) he has signed me off and my Gp hasn't said I need to go once a year for a hb1ac - which as someone who was gestational diabetic and has RH I would have thought I would. Has anyone else had a hands off experience from their gps? Good job I am bright enough to take charge myself

This is exactly my experience Emma. My Endo discharged me over a year ago now but my GP and Practice Nurse don't seem to think I need any of the usual diabetic checks. My last hba1c and cholesterol check was August last year and that was only done because I insisted on it. I haven't seen my GP in over 9 months but I will be requesting another check when I do go next!

I am also going to ask for the eye checks too. Not sure I'll get it though

How is the incessant eating going? You were doing it this weekend, weren't you?
Been thinking of you all morning!
