Today I found myself out and bout with a couple of health food experts, we were hungry - so we went to their " must try" vegan cafe.
BS before food 4.4 - 45 minutes later 9.4 !!!!1 this is the worst reading I have had in a month - especially in the late afternoon normally at the low end of my day .

Next time I will give being healthy a miss and go for the steak ! :) oops .

I was seriously astonished as the stuff really did look as it if actually should be healthy and in fact tasted better than I as expecting - God knows what was hidden in it!

Where was your BG 90 mins to 2 hours postprandial?

If you're thinking that your resultant "higher than ideal" BG was because of hidden carbs, then you'll need to accept that as it's pretty much unavoidable when you eat out - unless you somehow find yourself in a 'low carb' cafe...

Last time I checked, vegans still eat carbohydrates - but they do avoid animal produce. Also, just because the food contained a sufficient quantity of carbs to aggravate your BG - certainly does not make it "unhealthy".

Yes, plants do contain carbohydrates. As in every type of café, some choices are lower carb than others.

Are you aiming for zero carb? Try the water lol

No I am actually okay with a lot of vegetarian foods.. and enjoy so many exsotic foods that are available nowadays... in new and fancy restaurants, but some people are so diabetic that they cannot eat carbs almost and they would have a really hard life surviving if not meat was available.. I only eat meat like once a week..

They would have a harder time if they had to catch the meat themselves. Plants are easier as they don't run away ;)

I am thinking of the last two times I went out for dinner. First to an omni place where I had a fantastic salad loaded with veg, seeds, herbs. The second was to a vegan pub where I had a burger but left the bun. It's just about making the best choices from what is available, same as for everyone :)

The thing that surprised me most was that I
had a vegetable bake with cheese , a pea soup and i told them to leave off the pasta , the sweet potato and the rice . so as far as i was aware i was eating a low carb , vegetarian dish .

I have eaten all of the identifiable ingredients before with no issues and my afternoon meals rarely cause more than a 2 mmol spike . I cannot imagine what actual ingredient could have caused the issue to be honest . Ive made my own cheese sauces with flour and not caused any spike at all.

For me it's not always just about what I eat but quantity. I find tend to eat more when dining out or entertaing. As much as I would like to believe that I can eat as much as I want as long as it's LCHF, quantity does also impact my BG.

There are far too many variables to account for here @CherryAA. The reality is, you will never know the exact ingredients and their quantities - so there could be 100 different reasons as to why your BG was a little higher than normal. And that's just related to the food part...

Here's food for thought, or at least some other possibilities for you to ponder over:) Did you wash your hands before testing? Did you re-test to confirm your 9.4mmol/l? Have you factored in the ISO '13 +/-15% meter accuracy error margin? What did you drink with your meal? As you can see, the list can get longer and longer...

I drank water , i have a freestyle libre cgm so i watched the 5 mol spike develop and sit there before gradually coming back down . I ate a smallish plate of vegetables with cheese sauce . In a restaurant committed to whole foods and veganism . It seems pretty unlikely that they are feeding their customers sugar packed vegetable bakes! In the end it doesn't really matter , just that this is the very first time I've had a spike that makes no sense to me at all ! Fish and chips with curry sauce , and baked beans on toast both did less :) very wierd !

Cheese sauce in a vegan cafe? I don't think you can compare the ingredients in your homemade dairy cheese sauce with the ones you would find in a plant based meal. Vegan "cheese" sauce is often made from blended cashews or puréed root vegetables such as in the recipe below. Peas, although they grow above ground, are pretty high starch :)

Interesting . I cant pretend to know the first thing about veganism , so it never occurred to me the problem might be , 'not cheese'. Sauce . I have eaten root veg and peas before without problem before especially late afternoon , however i have not eaten oats before ( with or without diabetes ). So maybe thats the culprit !

I dont think ill bother trying to find out by eating any more of it ! Interesting experiment though .

It doesn't have to be sugar-packed. Perhaps it was thickened with pulses of some kind? The sauce or the soup.

If you're interested you could go back and see if the same thing happens again, and ask them what's in your meal choices too. Perhaps they could also point you towards lower carb options.

Funnily enough, I've never really found the thought of pulses at all appealing. I've seen a few comments about people trying to find out how much they can tolerate and always thought - I won't bother finding out as if I've never had them before I'm not going to miss them now. Maybe my body knew more than I did about how it felt about pulses !

The food tasted "OK" but not particularly something I would seek out. I'll stick with the bacon and eggs in future :)

Hi @CherryAA, why not give the cafe a call and ask them what they put in your meal; I would want to know as that was a huge spike.

Many non diabetics go over the guidelines in ignorance and would be surprised to find out so.
