A thought occurred to me today. Are we the new world people to lead the way to the next level of humanity? Is it not said that suffering brings insight? Is it not said that, 'the closer to God, the greater the suffering'? Are we not the way to a better society?

Awwwwwww @leslie10152 . I'm just having a cuppa and pondering ponderous thoughts too, after a 4am start and a long journey to a job, which we've thankfully just finished. I'm finding the cuppa very restorative, given that my body feels that it's time for a glass of wine, some good food and my bed (it now being 2.30pm!).

I'm sending you a hug, a virtual cup of tea, the promise of a virtual glass of red a little later, and the assurance that we are all fab, but we folks here on this forum of ours living our lives the way we do are just that teensy bit MORE fab. ;)

How that translates into being closer to God, and/or leading the way to a better society, well, I think we can all do our bit in making this world a better place.

Does that sound about right?

I am one of the chosen!
I am one of the weird ones!
Literally!

I do believe that those who are sufficient in giving advice on this forum are the enlightened ones! Those who have found the true way to a better healthier lifestyle, those who have the knowledge and understanding of how these conditions can be a disciple to those who are the uninitiated.
The best part is when those find the truth of how this forum can be so helpful and read their stories in the success stories forum!

How an entity comes into it, I'm not to sure!

I will err on the side of caution, as I'm sure I had a revelation during my hypo hell!

If that proved to be true it might go some way to making it all worthwhile! I think we all share one useful attribute, we have to grasp unpleasant realities and deal with them, just to survive. That must give us the ability to sort what is really important from the bullshine we are bombarded with. A positive thought anyway, always good.

One thing this all taught me is EVERYONE has something. For me it's Type 2. Someone else may have depression, or cancer or or or or.........
We don't know what people are struggling with behind closed doors.
This is a controllable condition for me and consider myself lucky that I found this forum for support.

We do not use our assets to best effect for the good of all. There are many who don't access the Forum, non diabetics and diabetics, who would benefit from an understanding of the changes in lifestyle many of us have made to improve our own situations.

Hi Snapsy, I really like the part 'being on this forum and living the way we do means we are a teensy bit MORE FAB!

This stuff about << insert deity name here>> and chosen people is a load of ******.

Most of my problems are self inflicted, the COPD I have was caused by smoking cigarettes. The AFib problem is caused by lungs not able to supply enough O2 so it gets out of wack and the heart rate increases if I have to lay on my back.

The T2 has been around as borderline for a good many years due to my drinking beer and eating the wrong stuff.

It must be Karma coming back to bite me on the **** from a previous life. :D

A while back my daughter told me that "God chose you to be diabetic". I replied that I wished he hadn't!
As a non-believer I generally follow the "there is always something else waiting to kick you in the teeth" view. All we can do is dust ourselves off, pick ourselves up and start all over again. If during that process we help others too then great.

I think that rationalising suffering as being 'special' or 'chosen' is illogical, pointless and a hiding to nowhere. It is just one step away from blame.

There are umpty thumpty billions of human beings on the planet, and many times more other lives as animals and plants.
The only difference between human and animal suffering is that we are self aware enough to try to justify it.

The reality is that out of all those billions, there are a heck of a lot of people (and animals) whose suffering is many times worse than yours. Or mine. Those people aren't posting here. Which I find very humbling.

So I think it is best to just do the best I can, every day, and appreciate each day as it comes.

" Are we the new world people to lead the way to the next level of humanity"?

That's a bit of a leap since we are only concerned with one illness and we are doing what we can. Other diseases are available.

"Suffering brings insight".

This may be true but I don't think that anyone should suffer if it can be avoided. You should not seek to suffer for learning purposes.

'the closer to God, the greater the suffering'

Is that good???

Is this post one of those theological arguments that says if you are closer to God because you are suffering then you are the chosen one?

Pass. It's not the sort of logic I was taught.

While I don't believe in the god piece, I do get where you are coming from. Chosen or not, in order for us diabetics to manage our condition we must take control of it and I think knowledge comes with that due to self testing, reading on the condition and nutrition and experience.

It definitely changes your outlook on most if not all aspects of life, or at least it has for me. It changed my view of food, my view of sleep, stress, work, my lifestyle and how I am as a person. Most of this is good, but if you offered me a normal working pancreas... I would take the normal working pancreas

Hi, leslie10152, v. interesting question - maybe, yes - though maybe not quite in the way you are thinking - i wonder if we are like the canaries that were taken down mines, if they became unwell or died this warned of the state of the air in the mine - perhaps the increase in all types of diabetes is an early warning to all the world that something is wrong with the planet, and life on the planet, whether it be chemical overload of air and water, and food, or lifestyle and diet changes, or something else, even climate changes, or a combination of these - only today i read medpage today - .." as temperature rises, does the risk of gestational diabetes spike? " -http://www.medpagetoday.com/OBGYN/Pregnancy/65299?xid=nl_mpt_International_2017-05-19&eun=g415048d0r
Could the increase in diabetes worldwide lead to an urgent re-evaluation, and ultimately lead us nearer to a cleaner, healthier, 'greener' planet?

Would love to think you're right, but hard to believe humans will ever overcome their sense of denial about almost everything. Ran across this great quote on twitter recently. Says it all really:

I believe we are diabetic soldiers. Fighting a very important cause.
Some of us lose limbs, acquire scars - mentally and physically. We are experimented on by the offer of new drugs/insulins.
We are the new generation of soldier @leslie10152 .
We either survive or die!

There may be as many as 10x to 20x more suns in our Milky Way as there are people on this planet. Its likely there are as many galaxies in the universe as there are suns in our milky way. Number of stars over 100,000,000,000x100,000,000,000 . As yet our search for intelligent life has met with the Great Silence. We are fairly special, yet we comprehend our frail existence and hope for something better. It would be highly probable that someone called Derek has posted these same comments somewhere out there beyond our universe in a vast infinite Multiverse if what some scientists believe is true! I think all the human race is special and chosen but as yet we have not lived up to our challenge to steward the planet. :)

Agree, great quote, but it may be that there is more hope than Gus thinks - diabetes is costly to families and societies, financially, and emotionally, and it is long term, it could be that world leaders will be just forced to take notice, through basic self interest, as the costs will soar if this research re gestational diabetes, and this much wider research below, is sound -
Climate Change Linked to Rising Diabetes Prevalence:
Warmer temperatures may reduce brown adipose tissue activity
  • Study, Published in BMJ Open, research showed that similar patterns were reported across the globe, with a 0.170% increase in glucose intolerance prevalence associated with each one-degree Celsius increment in mean annual temperature (95% CI 0.107%-0.234%). Overall, warmer countries tended to have a higher prevalence of glucose intolerance..........Blauw told MedPage Today in an email that "we were surprised by the magnitude of the effect size, as we calculated that a 1°C rise in environmental temperature could account for more than 100,000 new diabetes cases per year in the USA alone."https://www.medpagetoday.com/Public...id=nl_mpt_DHE_2017-03-21&eun=g415048d0r&pos=0
