@Curemytype1 . Cure in the foreseeable future? Highly unlikely.
Easier and better management? Definitely.
Perhaps you could explain why you are struggling and maybe some fellow T1's can advise and help you.
The forum is a wealth of knowledge and a warm welcome awaits you.

Hi. Don't expect a cure for many, many years. Yes, do let us know what your difficulties are and I'm sure we can help at least a bit.

Don't struggle it's just an obstacle to overcome. Think of the positives not the negatives otherwise you'll have a miserable life if you keep thinking of the negatives.. Also you could of gotten worse things e.g blind, one limb, in wheelchair etc..._ so count yourself lucky
Just deal with it and ask for help when you need it.

Type 1 is an auto immune condition - so it's not your fault you got it.

If you tell us a little more about your insulin regime and the lows, then that might help.

Do you have the book Think Like A Pancreas? It's excellent for Type 1.

And yes, I think there will be a cure for Type 1 :)

I feel the same at times. I was told a few days ago that I am type 1. This is after being on type 2 meds for three weeks. I am current waiting for a hospital appointment and It's a worry as I feel like a ticking time bomb.

This forum and its members have been a great help. Either answering my questions or just by reading other people's issues/ daily tasks

Try not to get down, it's a shock but it's something we can self manage. As for people telling you its your fault, it's not. Its your body attacking itself ( clarification needed on my explanation).

I have a fear of giving myself insulin, but I cannot wait to start doing it and get on with my life as I need to start feeling better in myself.

Good luck

John

@Curemytype1 IT IS 100% NOT YOUR FAULT!! Your so-called friends sound awful, and I would point out to your family that there are genetic causes so they'd better hope they aren't next!

I believe there will be a cure eventually but not for quite a while. But the others are right - it can be managed and doesn't have to make you feel the way you do now. Please tell us more, or at least read around the forums and see that it is not hopeless.

Hey @Curemytype1 Your friends and family arent being very supportive here, your type 1 is an autoimmune condition so certainly not your fault. Knowledge is power so by learning and reading as much as you can then you can manage this, don't bury your head in the sand as easy as it to do this, talk to us about what it is exactly your are struggling with in your control and we will help you as much as we can :)

Hello @Curemytype1, Diabetes does change your life but you will learn to live with it and adapt. Don't despair, although there is no miracle cure yet there is hope to make the condition more manageable. JDRF are working on a smart insulin that when taken, which could be in the form of a pill, activates the insulin when the body needs it giving better control. It's early stages yet but promising. I donate to them each month so they can progress with their research. Have a read here >>>

That would be an amazing drug if they can get it working.

If you're feeling really down, speak to your GP.

Ignore the people who say it's your fault - they're wrong.

It sounds like you're struggling with diabetes control. If you tell us a bit more, we can help.

I am probably being a bit sentimental and overly optimistic but....
The cost of diabetes is going through the roof in the UK let alone the rest of the world. The prize to find progressive fixes has a huge pot of gold at the end. The research, in particular with type 1, is showing early signs that the two big hurdles might be overcome. The understanding of type 2 and the role of insulin is still very young and bound to ignite more MScs and PHD research. The impact on all the other diseases of strokes, heart attacks, cancers are beginning to seem a bit more lined with high BG. The technological advancement of our era has never been at a faster rate - in our lifetime we have mapped the human dna and 50 years ago people would of laughed out loud at such a thought. We understand more about genes than ever before. That feels like a perfect storm to me.

Why wouldn't there be a cure - or if not a complete work around the problems. Instead of synthetic insulin, how about synthetic beta cells which cannot get killed off.

Timescales are more difficult - it just needs a bright scientist to stumble across a set of facts - big data will help that - serendipity may prevail. But if the common held belief that singularity may occur as early as 2040 (the time at which computers can invent more advanced computers) perhaps in the next 10, 20, 30 years we may all be surprised by what science reveals.

I for one having everything I can cross crossed.

You got Type 1 via either a genetic, environmental or other unexplained factor, so what could you do about that.

You need to focus on what you can do to be the best possible you. You can feed yourself nutritious food, possibly exercise, party, holiday and make others happy (as well as yourself). Challenge yourself to be the best controlled Type 1 around, then if a cure does come around great, itherwise you will be physically and mentally fit to deal with the discipline of your regime.

@Curemytype1 Sorry if I've misunderstood, but do you not check your own blood sugar too?

I'm sorry you're in pain with your feet. There's a good Neuropathy thread here if youd like to have a read. Many people have found things can improve if they take certain supplements and keep blood sugar under 7.8.

How long have you had Type 1? Do you have a Diabetes Specialist Nurse too, eg at the hospital?

If your levels are between 5 and 10, you're doing well. Do you check after meals to make sure they're not spiking too high? That can be a problem for some people.

I know you're concerned about hypos at night. Could you do a basal test to see how your sugars are at night? Or even just set an alarm to test once eg at 2am?
