Hi I have been type 2 for about 3 years now, my diabetic nurse said my eating habits were perfect, I just had another blood test as I have been having problems, my hb1ac was 69. My liver, electrolytes and urine protein came back ab normal.i am currently on 4 metformin and 1 linagliptin a day. They also tried me on gliclozide and I was very unwell, they then tried me on dapaflozin which also made me very unwell. I have been refered to a hospital specialist for this. I also play a lot of squash and racketball which I am away a lot but always eat healthy when away which my nurse said was brilliant because I had to do a food diary. Can anybody please tell me what might happen at the hospital which I go to in 3 days please. As I am away again in 10 days. Thank you

Could you elaborate on your problems?
The linagliptin is to boost insulin and reduce the release of glucose into the blood, but your Hba1c is still quite high - could you describe what the healthy diet comprises?

Ah - potatoes are off limits for most type 2 diabetics as they increase blood glucose so drastically - mine shot up into the teens and stayed there for hours - I tested it once and have not eaten any since.
I'm afraid that the standard healthy diet as trotted out by health care professionals is totally wrong for me - my levels would not have gone down at all if I was following the guidelines I was given at the diabetes education sessions.
I am fine with huge salads - I have about 1/3rd a bag of ready made salad, with cucumber, creamy coleslaw, tomatoes, radishes, finely sliced celeriac, fennel - all sorts - with a protein such as tuna, eggs, cheese, shrimps or salmon or other fish - which is a nice lunch on a hot day. In the evening I have meat or fish with mushrooms, courgette, or other low carb veges and a dessert of low carb fruits and cream. I have coffee with cream or a herbal tea, or my own brewed ginger beer with artificial sweetener.

What type of specialist are you seeing? Did they give you no idea of what the cause of the abnormal test could be? Hopefully they will be able to tell you whats wrong or order scans to find out.

Please let us know how you get on.

Hi. I would imagine that the "specialist" will be diabetes consultant who will talk to you about reducing the level, the impact of meds so far, your diet and your overall approach. No doubt you will be supplying a urine sample and maybe more blood tests. If I were you I would ask for a self-testing meter (if you don't have one) but most Type 2s are not issued with them..so push by saying you really want to be seeing what impact certain foods have on your system...particularly as you are struggling with just the meds alone. The advice you have been given on food thus far looks like the usual nonsense "healthy diet". For a Type 2, many of us here would say that "eating healthy" is good food but with an emphasis on reducing if not avoiding carbohydrates. I'd agree with @Resurgam in relation to one of your replies...if your DN thinks jacket potatoes are good for Type 2s she is churning our general rubbish. Carbohydrates effectively turn to sugar in the blood. Like many other Type 2s I avoid potatoes, rice, pasta, bred and cereals for a start. I know your main concern right now if this hospital visit, but it really is getting your diet sorted that will make the difference. I came off Gliclazide and now manage fine purely through diet. If you have to buy a meter..buy one. As for the abnormal liver readings...I have mine checked regularly for other health reasons and I can tell you that it doesn't take too much of change to bump into "abnormal" levels...and it can often be explained by meds you may be taking...you may even just have small infection. No point worrying about it..look forward to voice any concerns you have a this visit and..seriously...look again at reducing carbohydrates. Good luck. Spuds are a no-no for most of us.

@jacko3469 sorry to hear about the abnormal results and the high glucose levels. It's good that you're physically active. Stick with us and we'll teach you how to eat for health. I agree, what you've been told so far about what's healthy to eat is "rubbish".

Those lab results would concern me too. If I were you, and I'm not, I'd get a copy of all my lab results at my appointment with the specialist at the hospital and start researching online what those results mean, and begin requesting copies of all future lab test results so you can track whether you're heading in the right direction or not with your diet. Take charge of your health. Think of your healthcare team as your partners, not your bosses.

If you have any questions for the specialist, it helps to write them down ahead of time and bring them with you so you can prioritize what you are most interested in learning after you recieve an explanation as to possible causes of your lab results.

It's good you're here with us. Lots of helpful people here who can support you as you learn a new way of eating to restore your health. :)
