Why do some diabetics lose weight, but some do not ?
It's a big mystery. Some even lose weight when they are close to being "underweight" already (like me). Others don't.
One thing that seems fairly clear is that there is not necessarily a connection between losing weight, and properly controlling your blood glucose. Some people manage to control diabetes (with diet for example) but don't lose weight, or only lose a little bit of weight.
This is why the "stereotype" that people get diabetes
because they are overweight, or that people already diagnosed with diabetes are lazy
because they cannot control their weight and deal with their condition, is so wrong. Being overweight is statistically
associated with Type 2 diabetes but the whole cause/effect mechanism is not clear at all.
I did not know this before I was diagnosed in February. Because I am thin, I assumed diabetes would Never Happen To Me.
In the past nine months, I also learned that public knowledge of diabetes (and even sometimes, knowledge of diabetes among people who actually have the disease) is terribly bad. I am still trying to learn, but it's a very complex disease. It is actually a very interesting subject, in a sobering kind of way.
