Hi all, well what a first week on new LCHF!! Was in a dark place so was drinking 5/6 cans of strong beer a day. Since my visit to doctors other week and getting bad blood results etc decided its time to sort things out. I was told by doctor that because of the amount I had been drinking it could be dangerous to just stop. I went onto a couple of large glasses of red wine on an evening , which I enjoy and it also fetches my Bg down. Walking every day with my dog and doing 16/18 hour fast from 20.00pm to either 12.00 or 14.00. With only one black tea and vitamin water as needed. Yesterday had still not eaten at 16.00 so decided to have 4 slices of roast beef (not processed) and a couple of fried eggs. A handful of nuts an hour later. Didn't fancy any more food. Poured my glass of wine and had gone off the taste!! I added some of the vitamin water to it to make a spritzer. Enjoyed that but I seem to have gone off the taste of red wine, so not going to have any tonight. Could I have gone off the alcohol that quick? Checked BG over 7 days and got an average of 10.7, lowest reading I had was an 8.
Lets see what this week brings.

Well done on your progress so far! Although I don’t drink alcohol my tastes have changed eating low carb too. Three things I used not to like but love now are coconut, sweet peppers and dark chocolate. I still draw the line at olives though! :hungover::yuck::depressed:

@Rachox Yuk, olives and also olive oil are revolting to my pallet.

Well done on your first week, especially the alcohol reduction. That is wonderful news for you, and you will feel so much better.

I am with you on the olives!

I wonder why? Personally I stopped immediately, they're empty calories anyway. more importantly cutting back never worked for me, one drink and all thoughts of reducing the amount went straight out of the window. It's been 10 years now and the best thing I have ever done, after giving up fags. At least I reached 65 anyway. All the best.

Excellent work! Well done. As has been said, within days of changing eating/drinking habits our palates start to adjust. For example, after diagnosis but before I joined the forum I halved the amount of sugat I took in my tea, I only used to take half a teaspoon but when I halved that I just couldn't get used to it so after a few days I cut it out altogether and hey presto it was a helluva lot easier to drink. I can't abide sugary drinks these days.

Keep up the good work and your levels will keep dropping.

Doctor said as my brain was use to a lot of alcohol it could cause fits and bad head aches.

I think he was a bit concerned that you might be an alcoholic - so not your brain but your liver had been compromised - maybe consider yourself lucky to have dodged two bullets rather than just the one - I used to come across quite a few men with alcohol problems around Portsmouth when I lived there, and the prognosis after a certain stage was reached was never good.
For me 8mmol/l after eating was the turning point - once I was seeing that consistently it then began to fall lower without any extra pushing on my part. The lower BG levels made a definite difference to my mental state and I would never want to go back to the high teen readings I got on a high carb diet.

That is a high dose of Gliclazide, so test your BG often and see your GB as soon as your start getting readings under 7.

I assume you know the rules about testing and driving.

I was on that amount of gliclazide and had to reduce it when I started lchf. Didn't reduce it enough at first and had a couple of bad hypos. So be careful.
Ps Never liked olives before but now I love them! Glad my taste for red wine hasn't disappeared.

Yeah know all the rules at times a bit hard to follow lol. But got my head on now so watch this space!

Thanks for that @Concordjan. My nurse knows that I have started LCHF so will see how I feel and contact her if I have any problems. I have been on this dose for a long time.
