Well, I've just had my three-monthly mint Club biscuit after blood donation. That heinous crime probably equates to cruelty to chimneysweeps, blood sacrifices and feeding asbestos to babies all rolled into one. Blimmin gorgeous it was too.

You realise of course as you were enjoying your lovely minty Club biscuit, God was killing a kitten? I'm not sure how you can live with yourself.

It made me wonder - if you've just lost a lot of blood, and you eat something which puts sugar in your bloodstream, I presume the impact will be noticeably worse?

You're very welcome. They didn't have a P-P-P-Penguin this time. :D

Next time, if I give lots and lots of chin tickles to He Who Must Be Obeyed (aka The Cat) will that save the kitten and make me love myself again? :cat: ;) I haven't noticed the impact of a sugar rush after donating an armful, although I make sure I have a good breakfast (3-egg omelette) and a yoghurt beforehand. I certainly wouldn't do it while fasting, or without a decent amount of food (they always ask you if you've eaten well that day), but other donors may be ok with that.

I eat 1 slice toasted hovis granary bread ( small loaf 15g carbs) with 2 olive oil fried eggs sprinkling grated cheese and ground pepper - sometimes with steamed mushrooms and my fb and post 2 hour bg is less than 2. What is considered a spike please?

My fbg is usually around 5

I am going past the health food shop this morning, I will be calling in and getting more of the HB Lower Carb bread. It is a lot lower in carbs than Mission Low Carb Wraps that I have been buying.

Here's the bgl readings from over last weekend when I first started eating it.

Insulin
As a T1 I can eat wholemeal bread in moderation, its carb release usually mimics my insulin uptake and will counter the bolus tail if eaten with tuna for lunch, but with occasional spikes, but I've recently found using a small loaf with slices each just 3.5g less works even better, a 3u Humalog injection will usually cover a 60g bowl of porridge and needs 1 to 2 slices of bread with poachies to see me thru to lunch depending how my bloods are running each day.

So it's still a staff of life for me.

I have often wondered why we see so many threads about bread?
I gave it up and don't miss it but many people spend ages trying to find low carb bread (which must surely be an oxymoron).
So why do you think we need to eat it?
Habit, lack of imagination or does it fill another role (intentional pun) in our lives? I'm interested to have your thoughts.
What is better than wholemeal slice of bread with a good vintage cheese and glass of red vino? yes you can have cheese or other with crackers, or seed crackers, and still include the vino, but is it the same, no, cant explain why, its enjoyed the same, but there is just something about bread, that with certain other foods, there is no substitute.

I have not eaten bread for 1 year, do I miss it yes I did, now make my own seed crackers, and enjoy greatly. The bread often winks at me, but I simply wink back, and grab a seed cracker instead, and no carbs no guilt, and yummie. Thats my thoughts as you asked.

My contribution to the debate - Diet doctor keto rolls it’s taken a few goes and a bit of adjustment but they are delicious plus only 2g of carb per roll. Why miss out on bread? This is my slightly adjusted recipe using grams not cups and adding a few tweaks. Had some for lunch today with mackerel pate very enjoyable too
Ingredients
150g almond flour
20g psyllium husk
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3 egg whites
2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar
150mls boiling water
Seeds for topping
Method
Put oven on at 155fan or 175c or 350F
Line a large baking tray with baking parchment
Put kettle on and put 2 teaspoons the vinegar into measuring jug
Separate egg putting the whites into large bowl with the salt. ( keep yolks in fridge for some mayo or an omlette) use mixer to beat into soft peaks and put to one side
Put all remaining dry ingredients into another mixing bowl
Measure boiling water with vinegar to 150mls
Add the liquid to dry ingredients mixing slowly
Then add beaten egg whites until mixed to a play dough consistency - this only takes a minute or so
Divide mix into 6 rolls place on tray and scatter seeds on top if liked
Pop into bottom of oven for an hour and 10mins

Hope this helps anyone out there who is missing bread

I will definitely be making some of these for our trip to Austria on Monday. Been fretting for days about what I'm going to be able to sensibly eat without making life difficult! Thank you so much!
Good luck preparation and weighing and measuring make the difference. My first attempt didn’t get water right used too much my measuring jug isn’t easy to read and had hollow rolls!

But couldn't you spread marmite on your finger , dip it in and lick it off? just a thought...

Habit, lack of imagination or does it fill another role (intentional pun) in our lives? I'm interested to have your thoughts.
An example here in Mallorca one of the most appreciated foods simple and incredible taste enjoyed by many tourists, visitors and locals alike its just part of life in Mallorca breakfast, lunch dinner you name it is eaten every day generally, its called Pam b oli
in mallorcan language. What is it,

Large slice of integral unsalted local mallorcan bread, this is sightly toasted one side, on toasted side is drizzled with olive oil, raw garlic rubbed over, a soft tomato pressed and squashed on top and then a slice of Jamon Serrano, or simply change the Jamon for cheese, or the simplest and most enjoyed version of all is just bread the base of the dish, olive oil garlic and tomato, its yummie, but without the bread this amazing recipe would not be possible is one of the reasons why sometimes bread is so important. Next time or if you ever come to Mallorca try it, I feel confident it will blow you way and you will not forget it, if your situation allows bread or can tolerate an odd slice here and there, make that odd slice Pam b oli?
