I Miss My Bananas

Does Dr B allow bacon and eggs?
Oddly, Dr B chooses to regard eggs as carb free, despite the fact that an egg yolk contains about 0.6g carb. By contrast, he sees cheese as containing about 1g carb per ounce and considers that it has to be counted as part of one's carb allowance. I think this may be due to the relatively high carb content of US cheese compared to UK cheddar, which if the info on the packets I buy is to be believed, contains less than 0.5g carb per 100g. Dr B is no gourmet. One of his recipes involves PROCESSED cheese!!!

Glad he isn't perfect! ;)

I miss banana butties but I'd miss my toes more.

As for Dr. B. I find the man far too stringent, I can tolerate tomatoes so I have have them. The same goes for some other foods that I would prefer not to give up. We sometimes forget that our personal tolerance levels vary widely, a no no food for Dr. B does not mean that no no Diabetic can have them.

Oh bb i love bacon and eggs for morning breakfast but i think its off the list now i got diagnosed with type 2,

Bacon sandwiches are my favourite yummmmmm
I eat cheese and mushroom omelettes and bacon every day for breakfast, you will have no problems with that.

Bacon sandwiches are the go again now that I have found a lower carb bread made by Herman Brot and available from Go Vita health food stores.

Bananas are my downfall, they helped to bump my hba1c up into the 7% mark and put me on Metformin.

Dr B is not proposing his very low carb regime out of meanness, but because he is wants his patients and readers to attain what he considers normal blood glucose levels and so avoid complications. His ideal target is 4.6mmol/L (83mg/dl) with minimal rises after meals. He is happy to give his T2 patients Metformin, insulin etc. if they can't attain these levels by diet and exercise alone.

I said stringent not mean. "What he considers..." Which is why I am not wedded to a single or couple of boffins. I prefer a wider knowledge base so that I can decide for myself on matters of the metabolism. Why does Dr. Bernstein not mention Diabetes drugs apart from Metformin?

I will keep my eye out, I have seen some of his presentations and have yet to hear his opinions on what are widely used medications.
There is an extract from his book on the topic here:
http://www.diabetes-book.com/insulin-sensitizers-mimetics/
However, the book was written quite a while ago, so won't be completely up to date. Dr Bernstein still gives a live Q&A Teleseminar towards the end of each month which I find well worth listening to, even though a lot of the questions are from T1s about insulin. They can be downloaded, saved and listened to as podcasts. Anyone can submit questions, but Dr B gets quite tetchy if people ask questions that he has already answered in his book. A lot of the book is available free, as above, and lots of short videos.

As I said earlier, I prefer a wide range of boffins to listen to.

How about having half semi-ripe banana?

That doesn't spike me, but we are all different.

Test your blood before and 2 hours after and see if it spikes you or not?

Tipetoo, Im surprised about you eating cheese every day , I absolutely love cheese ,usec to have it grilled on toast with ham and tomato ...yum :wacky:

But just be diagnosed with type 2 and reading Roy Taylors book i have decidec to stay off cheese to see if it lowers my sugar levels and do what the good Doctor said.

But if it doesnt make any difference im going back on my favourite food !!!

I love cheese, and eat it every day. All different kinds. It is a staple in my diet.
I lost over 50 pounds and now have lowered my A1C to 40 all while enjoying cheese.
We are all different and I know some people are dairy intolerant.
Test with with your BG and see if cheese spikes your BG.
