Type 1'stars R Us

One of my biggest bugbears with hypos are people who tell us how to treat them but have never experienced one themselves. HCP's , DSN's and DAFNE course lecturers in particular.
Yes we know full well we only need to have 10/20 g carbs and leave it 15 mins then check our BS again. BUT and it's a big BUT it ain't always that easy. Panic, confusion, I mean who can look at the time when you can't decide which of the 4 hands in front of you is holding the food? And it's not just food it's life, it's recovery, it's our only hope.
Fridge / kitchen raiding should be a national/ Olympic sport.:)
 
They act faster than other sweets then I take it?

I don't use jelly babies myself, I use Tesco's wine gums, because they are stocked in the nearest shop to my home, are reasonably cheap, and are easy to keep in my bag.

However, jelly babies are soft, and don't require much chewing, so they are a pretty sensible idea.

If the sweets police were ever to question someone about why they might use them for hypos. :(
 
They work pretty much straight away for me. Have not tried any other sweets for hypo treatment. BUT maybe it would be worth looking into ;) lol

Not to mention you can't always be confident you've had enough when it doesn't go up as expected or quickly enough for whatever reason.

If I coincidentally happen to be out grocery shopping or something while trending downwards I tend to get one of the small cans of whichever has the appropriate amount of carbs in it.
 
LO is less than 2.2 I think, or at least that's the lowest number I remember seeing. And regarding bananas, you're not limited to just one if you're particularly low. ;)
There's no limit on bananas technically but a word of caution. Once whilst at work and hypoing I managed to get to local shop and purchase 6/7 bananas ( can't remember exact amount ). Obviously I ate the lot. Sick doesn't do what happened to me next any justice whatsoever. The fact that it still sticks in my memory after so many years probably goes some way to explain how bad that many bananas made me feel.:***::***:

I understand doing that if it's a chocolate bar or small bag of skittles or something, but a whole bag of bananas make very little sense. Hypo delirium I hope? :)
 
I am hypo unaware @Tony337. It was only the fact I needed a wee that woke me. I totally get your point. And yep years of T1D has enabled me to get back on track. Took ages mind but I am there now. Just hate going that high after such a low. Should have stuck to the Jelly Babies :)

I understand and I was just trying to make you and others feel a bit better about themselves in my own cack handed way.

@therower That post just made me smile. Totally agree with you, there is no right way to treat a hypo as everyone is different
There would be a lot of type 1's in the Olympic fridge raiding team. Training would require a hypo thou :)

Sometimes I find it hard to type what I am thinking, it comes out totally different to what was in my head and end up upsetting someone :)

What's with the obsession over jelly babies anyway? It's always the one used to describe recovering from a hypo here in the UK, when just about any other sweet would do the same job. I tend to have a banana at hand for these things myself.
Can't stand bananas.
 
Once upon a time I worked for Trebor Bassett, so had access to copious amounts of Jelly Babies, I wasn't a type 1 diabetic though back then, though the irony is that once I left the company I didn't eat any of their products, and now I always have them on me !

You have misunderstood what I was saying. I mean they are easy to buy, because they are for sale in a shop I go to regularly, therefore very easy to replace, and to stock up on, should I need to. I then carry then around in my bag, so that I always know where they are, should I need them.

I don't need to buy anything in a shop, if I have an unexpected hypo, because I always have some of these sweets with me, wherever I go.

I think we will have to agree to disagree on this. You do it the way you want, I'll do it the way I want,and same for everyone else.

As for buying things, that is when I'm actually out shopping as they are extremely quick(seconds) to consume and act quickly, not that I go to the shops every time I have a hypo.
 
I use haribos or glucose tablets. One of the more pragmatic consultants told me that a hypo can kill you so if you over do the jelly babies 'so what?' high blood sugars can be corrected. Just get the sugar in you quickly.

I always have sweets lying around but prefer using fruit/berries as they will have additional benefits as well as the necessary sugar, if I'm out and about I usually don't carry anything unless I expect to be stuck somewhere and have no way of going to a shop or whatever. Unlike seemingly most diabetics I take a pretty minimalist approach and only carry a Libre reader and a flexpen when I'm out, not a bag of strips and jelly babies etc.

Mini 200ml cartons of orange juice that come in packs of 3. i take a pack with me everywhere.
 
Woke up on a 13.4 !! oh rats again, took 1 unit with a small flat peach. Busy this morning, met my son and granddaughter in town for a coffee, then went food shopping, lunch reading was 4.7 :happy::happy: Even though I bought food today, I can't think of anything I want to eat tonight :rolleyes: o_O
