What was your fasting blood glucose? (with some chat)

Morning all 5.5 this morning.... I get to wait in all day today as the washing machine people dont do a time slot , so no morning walk but a lot of heavy lifting later.....

Here goes, it's been a busy few days

Tues = 5.0
Wed = 5.2
Thurs = 5.0

I've been to my first PPG. Tuesday evening 6pm til 8pm. It was only a discussion about a new medical centre with an overview but food supplied for us. Sandwiches, sausage rolls, crisps and a ring of chocolate and vanilla cup cakes of the large variety! Of course I didn't partake of one teeny morcil but my taste buds were doing summersalts throughput the 120 minutes. My eyes had a mind of their own and wouldn't stop looking at the food! Beads of sweat on my brow. Close up and personal to my old favourites. I can walk around Tesco and not bat an eyelid. What's that all about. Anyway I survived that ordeal!

Then my 2nd PPG yesterday. I was hoping it would not be a similar battle. Nope. Phew. Just 3 boxes of jaffa cakes this time, lemon and lime, strawberry and orange. The chairman was actually confronted in a jokey way about it, to which he replied 'it works as part of your 5 a day'. I'm happy that i have never been partial to jaffa cakes!

One of the attendees was there on behalf of the CCG. A senior nurse. I introduced myself to her and took the opportunity to give the background as to why I had joined. At the end of the meeting we had a quick chat. She asked what I thought of the DESMOND course. Her eyes started to glaze over as I was telling her. Lots of work to be done! Anyway I now have the contact number for someone who runs the patient diabetes get togethers also held at Tescos once a month and I'm going to contact today. So thats my little update for today! Keeping it brief as always!

Morning Peeps! 8.6 this morning after getting back late from a 2 day trip to Jersey. Managed to squeeze a 2 mile run and total 15,000 steps in yesterday. Now 5 days off Metformin to try and get my B12 up and stop my leg and feet tingles.
This morning I have a Derrick diabetes course. Strangely I’m hoping they offer us custard creams at tea break!
Good luck Geoff...hope the DEREK course is better than the DESMOND one I attended...just in case they are on a par...take a safety pin with you a good sharp stab with that should keep you awake until it's time to go home:)...seriously I'd be interested to hear what the DEREK course is like...what the structure is...whether it is informative & most importantly does it recommend the infamous NHS eat well plate.

Morning everyone hope you are all well my FBG is 13.8 and I am coming down with a cold
Jodie when we're unwell there's little we can do about our BG levels...any sign of illness or infection is guaranteed to raise those numbers...make that cold your priority... try to knock it on the head ASAP...good luck.

Good morning all.

Blood sugars were 5.4 again today, was feeling as if coming down with a cold yesterday, but seems much better today. Maybe I have beaten it.

@Canvaspic -- Hugs und keeping my fingers crossed for your mother. Hope that side effects will be few.
@Jodie Louise -- Sorry to read that you don't feel well. Maybe take it easy for a couple of days and try to beat this cold before it becomes worse. Hope you feel better soon.

6.5 for me. My T2 is behaving itself. I've managed to get my bm's down to 5's & 6's by diet and metformin only, no need for lantus and novorapid which is brilliant. God knows what is going on but I feel really energetic and well, something I've not known for years.
Excellent work Darren...what's been going on?...you've been working hard & it's paid off...good job.

Debandez I had to smile at the food choices provided...albeit an ironic smile...I'd be interested to hear what you told the senior nurse about the DESMOND course...as far as I am concerned they are a waste of money & resources...the glazed look...was it accepting of your concerns?

Thanks @Bluetit1802. You are like always a fountain of knowledge. Really interesting stuff.

Did you experience this large of a difference from the beginning? Or did it increase as time went by? Funny thing in my case was that a year ago HbA1c was only a bit higher than finger prick tests. This year with virtually the same finger prick numbers, it is a lot higher.

The large discrepancy has certainly been going on for at least 2 if not 3 years, and I have 2 x HbA1c tests each year. This last one is the first time I have queried it with my GP because she doesn't see me for anything diabetes related, although I have mentioned it to my nurse in the past and given her copies of all my data. Nothing came of it.

I'm curious too ! do tell :-)

Thanks, @Bluetit1802. This is definitely thought-provoking. Will pick up a print-out of results at my GP's this afternoon and look at my other numbers (including haemotocrit). Thanks for all your advice.

Good morning everyone, lovely sunny morning again here in London. 7.8 this morning. Pleased with that, definitely a big improvement. DN tomorrow. Hope everyone has a good day, I am doing some work then heading off to Tesco at lunchtime.

Orson I would love to know what the medical professionals think about the DESMOND courses...particularly when it comes to a member of one of the CCG's (who wield an enormous amount of power when it comes to deciding how our GP practices spend their budgets)...are they familiar with the content...the course structure...the one I attended was so condescending...patronising...archaic & ill informed...we started our course with with a bold question to the group which was 'what type of diabetes do you all have'...we all looked at one & another believing it to be a cryptic question...since the DESMOND course is only for T2...then answered tentatively 'er type 2'...we were all rewarded with 'well done, give yourselves a big pat on the back'...fudging unbelievable:arghh:

So many "courses" from people who have been "trained" by "experts" who dont consult the people they are meant to address. When I was last at my doctors and told him the NHS had done nothing to help with my treatment he went quiet. The truth is that the advise I was being given was not to do the things that gave me control. Its a scandal really and applies to many aspects of medicine and beyond

At our surgery I no longer see the DSN...who at my first review told me I was obsessive for testing my BG...said with great conviction I had no need to test...she wasn't even aware of my results...I had to point out my GP believed my control was excellent...having reduced my BG from 17.4 (no HbA1c breakdown on the first results) to 5.6 by the time I saw her & on that basis I would continue to test irrespective of her opinion....my own GP when I asked him how much he knew about T2 said 'not much'...so I recommended a book for his newly diagnosed patients...which he now recommends...he says every time I have a review he learns a little more...at my last appointment he excitedly showed me information about a course he was about to go on...I sometimes think you couldn't make this up...I have a good relationship with my GP (now) but only because I worked hard at repairing it.

I think members here are definitely outliers in terms of knowledge and control of our condition. In terms of what I know of the general population it would not have surprised me at all if the DESMOND congregation did not know what type of diabetes they had. I have never been offered any of the courses nor would I ever have taken one. I am personally satisfied for my DN to confirm my weight and tell me what I already know from online records. I quite like the extra checks being classed as diabetic confer - eye screening etc so I am in no hurry to ever be classed as in remission or anything else. However, I agree the advice given at dx ranges from poor to harmful and needs to be sorted. I just have low expectations of many of my fellow coutrymen and women. I fully expect them to just want tablets/injections and be allowed to carry on as before.
As I said, by virtue of being here we self identify as far from the norm. Taking control of one's health and wellbeing in not a British trait IMHO. You can never underestimate the intelligence of the general public. In an age dominated by "the market" we get what the lowest common denominator can stand - no interference with how they want to live - just treatment to mitigate effects for a while. The cost is the advice and courses people here complain about.
I am not saying don't cast your pearls among swine, just don't be surprised if not everyone is as receptive as members here. Could be TLDR
