Is it possible?

Evening.

My recent HbA1c was 62, which makes me a type 2. No issues with that. However, I have just found something regarding an old HbA1c from 2015 which I had near enough forgotten about. This 2015 result showed my HbA1c as 55, the surgery I was with at the time didn't make anything of it apart from to tell me about it.

Does that mean that it is possible that I have been either Type 2 or pre-diabetic since then?

Thank you all - that's what I was afraid off.

So that is about 3 1/2 years then I that I have been T2 and didn't even know about it.

Oh well can't do anything about the past only the future - am a little upset that nothing was done or said previously though.

When I was diagnosed in 2017 at my urgent appt to discuss it, the Dr said very casually “oh you had a high fasting blood sugar in 2013”. I hadn’t been told and was initially very angry, but for my own sanity I had to put it behind me and look to the future and what I was going to do. I hope you can do this too x

Thank you for replying.

Not just me then. The shock is starting to wear off, cant help wondering if any damage has been done in that time though, wondering and worrying though isn't going to get me anywhere.

In a few days, or less, I will have got past it i'm sure.

Me too. I’ve now found at least 4 or 5 fasting bloods going back 5 years in prediabetic and diabetic ranges and never been told. As far as I can tell the hb1ac that got me diagnosed 6mths ago was the first ever done.

@HSSS Wow.

It's unbelievable that this happens. I know doctors are busy, but surely with a potentially life threatening/changing condition they would at least get the receptionist to ring, to say they gp needs to see you.

That's almost what finally happened with me, the receptionist rang and told me I was diabetic, and needed to go in for more bloods and to make a follow up appointment with a gp.

The RECEPTIONIST told you???? That is awful. I knew I was T2 through having had a finger prick test on a friend's meter of 17.3 but I had to go through the HbA1C as standard procedure but I was called in to see the DN for the result. I would have complained long and loud if the RECEPTIONIST had given me such potentially traumatic news over the phone.

Yep. Can't remember the exact wording of most of the conversation, but I recall clear as day her saying "you are diabetic" then booking me in for more bloods and the gp follow up, which I have straight after the diabetic nurse follow up on the 30th. I did ask if I could camp in their car park as it would be easier :)

I guess I just don't have the energy to be upset for long lol. What's done is done. I suspected I would be T2 at least because of the thirst (was hoping it was one of my other drugs) and the home testing kit results, so it wasn't a complete surprise but it could be for someone else though.

That and I would worry about getting someone in trouble at their job, when for all I know the doctor had asked her to tell me.

The colour pink!
I found out about my diabetes from the local Driver Licence Authorities!!! By law, in order to still be allowed to drive my car, I had to have a full medical check by doctor once I reached a ‚certain age‘ (70), which is when my diabetes was diagnosed. Again, by law, he had to advise the authorities. Before my follow up appointment with doctor to hear my results, I’d already received a letter from authorities confirming I could continue to drive with stipulations. Talk about being gob-smacked!!!

I was diagnosed 3 years ago after a routine blood test. I then read up about the condition and looked at my Army discharge medical from 11 years ago. HbA1c was listed as 5.9 so just below pre-diabetic diagnosis level but nobody told me. By the time I was diagnosed I had background retinopathy which I have since been able to reverse with LCHF but I don't know what other damage has been done that could have been avoided if I had been warned earlier. Not happy to say the least!

Regards

Bluebell

thank you @Ally Pally and @Bluebell_GB.

I am gladd you did get diagnosed eventually @Ally Pally and congratulations in being able to drive "legally" seems DVLA move faster than the doctors sometimes.

Congratulations on being able to reverse your background retinopathy @Bluebell_GB.

That worries me too about what damage may have happened in the last 3 1/2 years. I have another full blood count appointment tomorrow and then a diabetic follow up promptly followed by a GP follow up next week. Busy busy.

I don't blame you for being angry or anyone else that has been the victim of negligence, my story is the same. My fathers fasting blood glucose a few years back was pre diabetic and just below diabetic. Doctor told him don't worry about it, it's fine, go back to normal diet. He changed his diet and fixed his problem and got the level way down, but would of certainly gone on to become diabetic if he followed his doctors advice or ignoring it. I'm sure there are a lot of people in the same boat.

However, got to put it behind you and concentrate on life ahead. The more you understand your condition, the better you are at spotting problems and seeing improvements.

You were a T2. They let the ball drop.

A specialist several years ago ran the tests after PCOS was discovered, he just never told me I was prediabetic. Specialists in other fields knew and didn't mention it either. (Just like my heartmurmur; no-one bothered to say anything, until one of the docs said oh, but you've had that for years!) If he had, I could have found out that carbs were my problem, rather than cutting out fat like the dietician told me to... Never would've gotten to this point.

I love my current GP. She actually talks to me!

Given how little success standard treatment protocol has been, it is hardly surprising that there is little to no urgency with regards to T2D diagnosis, except in acute cases where there is risks of ketoacidosis.

There is the general acceptance that it is a chronic, progressive condition that few recovers from...although many on this forum have found out how starkly different that view may be from our personal diabetes journey.

So you may have come to learn about it at just the right place and the right time. Onwards to your journey of recovery.

You may even have been diabetic for several years before 2015 LizAnne...I certainly was...looking back many years I can match the symptoms I had to my diabetes...I attributed the extreme tiredness frequent thirst & weight gain to my work...overnight duties...early morning starts...long distance journeys...clearly I can see now a pattern was emerging.

Me too! When I got access to my records online I discovered abnormal glucose readings in 2008 and 2015 which I was never told about. So that makes it 10 years before dx. I do wonder if admin staff check for whatever the primary reason of the test is only.
