hello, hope diabetes isnt being a complete pain in the tooshy. i was curious about veganism and so like are there any type 1 vegans here? how'd you get into it? what articles did you read? im really interested in it and like is it really beneficial? right now im not taking as much care as i should because i hate having breakfast, i feel nauseas half of the time and im kinda tired of eating meat. so like please give me an insight about how your life has changed for the better and whether i should go for it. thankyou so much and take special care!

Say wah??

Tired of eating meat!

The ambulance with the white coats is coming.....

I think the reason for being vegan ought to be a moral one rather than dietary. Being vegetarian is an option but if you are tired of eating meat why not just include more vegetables, fish and dairy in you diet.

Vegan food isn't really that great for diabetics, either type 1 or 2. Too many carbs ands overprocessed muck in it.

Reminds me of that old 1966 song with a bit of editing from me.

And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa
They're coming to take me away ho-ho hee-hee ha-haaa
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see those nice young men
In their clean white coats and trays of meat.
And they're coming to take me away ha-haaa

Hello back @fariamohsen ,

I can tag in a T1 member who manages pretty well (I believe.) abstaining from meat due to a condition.
@Mel dCP . Hope this helps!

@Zilsniggy, that is a very sweeping statement, and I disagree.

It is perfectly possible to eat a diet that works for any type of diabetes that is also vegetarian or vegan. It won’t be as straightforward as an omnivorous way of eating, but it is perfectly possible. We have vegetarian members who eat low carb high fat. It must be more challenging to achieve a well formulated diet when vegan, but it is still doable.

Likewise, it is perfectly possible to eat vegetarian, vegan, ‘normal’, high or low carb, protein or fat, without incorporating ‘overprocessed muck’ into that way of eating.

I understand that it can be too many carbs for a T2, but am not clear about the overprocessed muck? My son is Vegan on ethical grounds and he doesn't eat much processed food at all. Lots and lots of fresh vegetables, though he eats dried and canned beans. I personally couldn't do it (I love cheese too much) but it looks like a pretty healthy diet if you can tolerate carbs (or inject for them if you're T1).

What's that have to do with it? You don't need to eat breakfast to take care of your diabetes!
Have you checked out this sub forum? https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/category/vegetarian-diet-forum.71/
It's vegetarians and vegans thrown in together, but you should be able to get a lot of ideas browsing through the threads :)
You say you're kind of tired of eating meat. Does that go for cheese and yoghurt as well or just meat? Eating vegetarian is a lot easier than vegan.

@Tipetoo ,

I have the single in my collection since I was a kid. & all to aware of the subject matter in the lyrics.
The "B side" to the song you reference is the same tune in reverse.

Now changing the record.

Rewind, be kind.

Any further unhelpful mockery, or bickering off topic from any member will simply be deleted.

Thanks.

Hi @fariamohsen
I am not vegan, but like @helensaramay I do not eat meat (both Helen and I eat fish).
Yes you can avoid heavily processed vegan food but you will have to work hard at it.
Meat should not have a huge effect on levels, unless you have to bolus for rotein, so being vegan might not hugely improve control in itself.

Hi @fariamohsen - I’m allergic to meat and cow dairy, but I do eat fish, eggs and goat/sheep milk products, so I’m not vegan by a long chalk. I was quite an enthusiastic carnivore before these allergies developed, so I’m possibly not the best person to ask about doing it for ethical grounds. I do eat a few of these “ultraprocessed muck” substitutes that get quite derided here, but only the lowest carb ones - I eat well and remain well under 30g carbs a day.

I never eat breakfast either, my levels are perfectly steady until I do choose to eat at lunchtime or even later. I have a pump, which enables me to fine tune my settings without needing to eat, this might not be so simple if you are on injections. I’m just not hungry in the morning.

How is your control now?

Not sure if it is low carb vegan you are looking at. I haven't tried this but this video features a dietitian who has put together a low carb high fat Vegan protocol (I can't recommend as I am a meat eater, but I keep these references, as I like a full picture):

i have read a few articles on veganism being good for the environment but they werent detailed enough. ill surely read more about it

i dont really consume a lot of cheese/yogurt and with the growing reports of dairy products being the culprit of making our cells attack each other is concerning. now ofcourse this what i read on the internet and god knows what is true and what isnt. i just wanted to experiment and see for myself

my control right now is okay, its not the best ive been. i use insulin pens so it is kinda difficult to keep my bgs steady. i was always told that breakfast is really important for diabetics specifically. i guess i still dont know much or have been informed regarding diabetes in general. my knowledge comes from this site and the rest of the internet, not from my doctor. i tried talking to my doctor to let me take insulin according to what i eat but they refused to listen and now im stuck with using the same amount of units prescribed for every meal. ugh
