Metformin Side Effects?

Hello all,

I'm glad to have found this forum with loads of helpful information. If I may ask the following:

I'm currently taking Metformin for my type 2, dosage is 1000mg twice a day; Since I started my medication I've been getting frequent feeling of coldness in different areas: sometimes chest, sometimes wrist, sometimes calves area, sometimes neck. The coldness isn't painful but it's very uncomfortable to the point I'm not able to sleep through the night. I read chills is one of the side effect of Metformin, but the chill usually comes a few hours after I take the medication. Today I actually forgot to take a dose with dinner and I'm still experiencing some chills in my ankles. Is it normal for side effect to occur even hours after taking the medication? I also started experiencing fatigue in my calves (I do mostly cardio as my exercise), is muscle weakness normal?

Has anyone else experienced this chill with Metformin? What have you done to counter it? Thanks very much in advance.

I agree. Most side effects relate to stomach issues - digestion, nausea etc.

Would you, by any chance, be on statins too? Many GPs put patients with Diabetes on Statins, for various reasons. Muscle weakness, in particular, could be due to the statin.

I was not on statins... i was on metformin and forxiga (stopped now) and had muscle weakness at times. Not sure if it was a side effect of one of these... or just my lack of exercise in last 6 weeks due to my fracture in foot.. i am not sure...
 
I was so ill on Metformin - just one tablet a day, and Atorvastatin, but as I did not know which drug was the culprit, or if it was the combination, I could not report it - it took three goes to even get it written into my notes at the surgery.
It took some time for the symptoms to fade away, far longer than a few hours.
It was months before I regained enough strength to walk up stairs normally.

That definitely sounds bad. Sorry you had to go through so much. Usually everyone says side effects get ok with time but I don’t know how long.. i am wondering if I could survive one Met 500 mg SR, how come i had bad side effects with doubling the dose after almost a month.. i dunno.. i sm so scared to increase any medication

I had the same issues with simvastatin. My consultant said it would take 3 years to repair the damage that 26 days in statins caused. It actually took more than double that.
