Struggling with levels and sensitive feet

Hi all,

I've been type 2 for 5 years now and my levels have fluctuated between very good and not so good during this period.

Recently I've noticed my morning levels being higher than usual - between 9-10 usually and I've added an evening dose of the Metformin to my medication to counteract this. I had managed to drop down to one tablet but my control doesn't seem to have been great. So far the extra tablet doesn't appear to have made much difference which is odd.

I'm doing a low carb diet, but not specifically monitoring my carb amount - just generally cutting back on carbs/sugar etc.

When I had my eye test a few weeks ago they said there were some early signs of nerve damage in the one eye, although this could be reversed if I lowered my levels.

I was a bit concerned by this and I've also noticed over the past few days that my feet are quite sensitive when walking. Like I've been standing on them for a long time and they're a bit sensitive or something.

Is this possibly diabetes related?

Best,

Dominic

Sounds like diabetic neuropathy IMO,I could be wrong,Im not a Dr.But I have that, and cold feet too.So Im always wearing nice woolen socks all the time for that. Not happy about it,but at least it isnt pain, just some numbness and tingles.Im grateful I have feeling there at all.Made a believer out of me on making those sugars the best I can.Im T2,diet controlled.

Hi domforr
Your symptoms may well be related to diabetes but if you are concerned a visit to your Dr or nurse may be in order.
As you don’t count carbs precisely maybe you could post a typical day’s food here and we may be able to tweak a few things to help you get your levels down, those pesky carbs have a habit of creeping too high if you’re not careful! Metformin won’t make a huge difference, I found when I dropped one tablet my blood sugars only rose by about 0.5mmol/l

Thanks for the responses. It does sound like it's diabetes related which worries me.

A typical days food would be:

Breakfast - pancakes made from eggs, cream cheese, stevia, blueberries, flaxseed and chia seeds
+ benecol drink (only 3.5 carbs) + tea with milk
Lunch - chicken salad from pret + peanuts
Dinner - some kind of meat and veg - maybe sausages with green beans and cailifour cheese
Snacks - tends to be nuts/peanuts
Drinks - coffee with milk and tea with milk. Maybe a coke zero

I'm generally pretty disciplined, although I may occasionally have some Oppo ice cream and or skyr yoghurt (about 5g carbs)

Any suggestions on this?

Best,

Dominic

or any other snack alternatives that are a good option?
Pork crackling works well or something like pecan or macadamia nuts.

As @Caeseji says, pork scratchings are good, macadamia nuts are just delicious! I sometimes resort to a piece of cheddar (about 50g) if I'm peckish. Always seems to do the trick for me :cat:

Nuts are bit of a minefield in my experience. Even the lower carb varieties are only lower carb if you aren’t knocking them back in 300g bowls. Macadamia are nice but expensive and less easy to obtain. My current favourite is Brazil. Sainsbury’s sell them in neat 100g bags and I just add a sprinkling of my own salt. But even then I would normally only eat them as an accompaniment to a smaller meal, not as snacks to bridge gaps between eating.

Sensitivity in the feet does sound like it could be neuropathy or neuropathy repair.
