Hi everyone hope you're well, can I get some advice on what would be the most accurate scales for grammes of food measuring.

I can't really get my head around working out grammes of food what it looks like on a scale. So, to get me started, I'll need a set. Q.

Any household scales will do that but why do you want to weigh your food?

When I first started low carbing I bought a set of digital kitchen scales from Argos. I weighed and measured most things to begin with to get an idea of portion sizes. I weigh less now two years down the line as I can judge my portion sizes now. I do however check things from time to time to make sure I’m not over or under estimating.
These are the ones I bought:

If you want buy scales, I suggest some with a flat weighing platform, so that you can put your plate, bowl, jug or whatever on their. I'd also recommend ones with a tare function, so that if you weight, say your meat, then want to weight your veg, you can just zero the scale and add the next thing, for an independent reading.

I agree and mine is a salter as well though I actually bought it for cooking and have had it longer than I've been diagnosed :)
I got mine very cheaply from TKmaxx and they often have digital scales on sale/discount there if one is available to you. It can be set to do both gms and lbs. (atleast mine does)

Thanks for your reply, its just portion control. Some foods have confusing information on the back I can't interpret, so I'd thought weighing would be a way? 70 carbs a day is so low for me and with 'pouring from packet' foods is easy to get it wrong. So I thought an accurate scales would be a help. Q.

Ah I see! So what sort of things out of packets are you eating? There’s not a lot that comes packaged that’s low carb and maybe I could help with that.
For example, if it says that something has 20g per 100g and the packet weighs 200g then that’s easy to work out.

Have you got something in particular you’re enjoying eating at the moment?

I embarked upon this route from being a newbie, back in February. As I am very busy I simply estimated amounts. It worked as I dropped my HbA1c, dropped my blood pressure readings and am losing weight at 1 kilogram a month. Other diabetes related symptoms have receded. If you are strapped for time, you might consider that approach.

If the packet has 100 grams in it then use a fifth if you need 20grams.

Been told lies , fake people
What scales can you believe? .
I had an appointment with my DN last week straight after gp appointment.
My doctor weighed me and I was 92kg .
When I asked my DN nurse at end of appointment to check my weight on her (identical set of scales) it was 97kg ..
Quite a difference for what you would expect to be given by medical specialists.

I wanted to try some granola for breakfast, I tried some today and my BG didn't spike that much, I think if I'd poured out a bit less I'd have been fine. I need more variety and was getting fed up with scrambled eggs and bacon. I took a blood pressure monitor to the GP'S to do an a/b comparison and mine was way under so I sent them back to Amazon. I bought a cheaper set after advice from the nurse and they're bang on. My sp02 readings are often poor and my home unit was way way under when we did a similar comparison so accuracy isn't decided by price. Some meals for one I need to check too as taking some out after the microwave would stop elevated bgs. I can't cook and on my own now so trying to cope with all of this, so thought a set of scales would help. Hope that makes sense.

I am not on my own but cannot cook. I do a great scrambled egg now though, made with double cream. I identify with your boredom with getting fed up with scrambled eggs and bacon. I know it can be difficult to get the variety in the breakfast diet. I think Rachox does a good low carb granola btw. @Rachox

I see!
When it comes to meals, think outside the box. You don’t need to eat breakfast food at breakfast, you can eat any low carb food at any time.
The amount of granola you can eat is unlikely to satisfy you all that much though how do you eat it? Have you tried it with full fat plain yoghurt and some berries? That way you can have an even smaller amount and sprinkle it on a big bowl of yoghurt and double cream.

Thanks for the reply, good point you raise. You're right, I dont have enough variety and that's making it difficult to feed myself.

Sounds like lunch to me, that works so good on my sweet cravings.....:brb:
How do you cope with cravings? I'm finding it so tough with snacking. A tablet I (pregabalin) take makes it worse as it shuts off neuro receptors that tell you your stomach you're satiated.

Usually for me when I have cravings it’s because I’ve had too many carbs and not enough fat.
I don’t eat any grains. They spike my BG and then I crave more. So instead I have some cold roasted meat, olives, cheese or a pepperoni stick. Coffee with full fat cream will do too.
I don’t snack. All of these things I have as a meal.
If I’m hungry at breakfast time or not till lunchtime
I don’t know about pregabalin so can't speak to that.

Read your message twice, thank you very much. At the heart clinics they tell me to cut out fats, my triglycerides are high ATM and I can't eat fats. Hard isn't it, I'm with you on the cheese though, is there any special brand or type you eat?

I still get cravings, sometimes worse than others. If I must snack, find diabetic friendly snacks like sliced veggies,or my favorite, pork rinds (scratchings) wont hurt sugars at all,and they have the fats you need if you get the kind with fat still on them,YUMMY!!!!!A fatty piece of chicken,a fatty rib, yumm!!!!

The plain Greek yogurt with berries is like ice cream to me now.In fact I compared it to the diabetic ice cream and preferred it,who'd a thunk it?

Carrots I can now taste the sugar in them, another sweet tooth satiator (Is that a word,if not I trademark it here and now) with not much effect on blood glucose that Ive noticed.Blackberries and raspberries are better than blueberries,so thats what I mix in the plain yogurts.

There is a point where you want x amount of hours to pass between meals, dont stress on that yet....it will come with education and time. You have enough learning just what to eat first.Tweaks will come soon enough as you gain food knowledge.

Late night snacks still happening, working on the between meal time spread of hours have been tough, but Im getting there.

The severe cravings will pass, whether they ever go away,,,,IDK,I still have em.But then I say to myself....do I want to see, feel my feet, have my limbs....and understand certain foods want to kill me....that helps me.I'd dearly love a loaf of hot artisan bread with butter, but will never happen again. But Im ALIVE to complain, beats the alternative.
