BG before supper was 4.6 which was the best I have ever tested. (Still relatively new to testing) My supper consisted of around 3 oz of chicken, handful of spinach, small amount of rocket, 2 cherry tomatoes, radish and cucumber BG testing 2 hours after meal results were 7.0! Anyone any ideas why BG was so raised, salad would normally only lift my BG by about .3. Could it be something like liver dump?

Hi @ryhopian

Yes, it could be a liver dump. I experience something similar when my BG gets down into the 3s - food (even zero carb meals of just meat/fish) raises my post prandial readings by more than usual.

You mention that the 4.6 is your lowest ever reading. Did you re-test to confirm either that or the reading of 7? One of them may have been off.

To be honest though, I wouldn’t worry too much about one odd BG rise - just look into it if a pattern develops.

Infections, stress, a non sleep night. I'm sure more people will be along with ideas for you.

I like to tell people that have raised blood sugars for no reason to keep an eye out for being a misdiagnosed type 1. Salads used to raise my blood sugars to over 13 at one point. So whenever I hear someone say a salad raised their blood sugar I like to make sure they are aware of how many of us are misdiagnosed at first.

When you first start to develop type 1 you are in a honeymoon phase where you still make insulin until you don't and it usually takes years to fully develop. So you will have erratic ups and downs and you will slowly get worse. Medications and change in diet might work for a while and then it won't, you have to end up having insulin for even cucumbers and tomatoes,. So just keep,it in mind if it is something that continues.

I didn't retest the 4.6 one as I was so pleased to see it plus every time I do retest I get different readings even using the same drop of blood. I had only had coffee and cream for lunch so was kind of hoping to be in 4s. Did confirm the reading the reading of 7 as I just couldn't understand it (It was higher the first time testing). This morning 4.9!

Wondered if the warm evening might have been a contributing factor. Had to have the bedroom windows open overnight..

Could well be liver dump, could be dressing. Did you have any on your salad? Possibly a load of sugar in there. The only relatively carby thing is there is radish, and I doubt you had 300 grams or radish. ;)

I am not on any meds at present, I am trying diet alone but doc says I need to get my bloods further down so this is giving me an impetus for very strict low carbing but is also causing some stress as there is a deadline to meet. Next Hba1c I need to book. I will take on board your comments hadn't looked on this as a possibility as had relatively low blood levels on diagnosis and no diabetes symptoms but judging by what others say, it should have been a cinch for me to get my bloods down as I started at 52 but it hasn't been. Even the Newcastle diet of 800 cals a day only brought them down to 47.

Only had apple cider vinegar cos I thought it was good for me don't like other salad dressings. 4 radishes which I have had before without any concerns.

It may have been the cherry tomatoes and lack of fat in your meal. 3oz of chicken and a good amount of salad is ok but this meal wasn’t for you. More protein and fat next time.

I never found chicken too helpful. Too much lean protein and not enough fat.

I just started using apple cider vinegar this week! Good stuff, love the taste, and low carb. The lack of fats might be the answer here (maybe add half an avocado or something next time?), but a liver dump seems more and more likely... I think. If it was the cherry toms or radishes I do think you would've had to have eaten more of those for such a rise... Could be it was just the one time. Keep an eye out for patterns.

Only just started using apple cider vinegar myself, was using ordinary vinegar but they seem to have watered it down and it no longer has the zing. Really enjoyed the taste of the ACV. #

Will consider the lack of fats as well as the liver dump as a possible cause. Didn't realise that lack of fats could be a contributing factor, hadn't heard of this before. Whilst we are on the subject of fats, is duck fat ok to use, I have about three jars in the cupboard doing nothing cos roasties are now off the menu.

Duckfat is only fine if you don't rub my face in it, because I'm jealous, haha. Seriously though, yeah, it's fine. And delicious. :)

So if it is a liver dump, perhaps someone can answer a question I have which is only vaguely related.

If liver dumps lift up blood glucose how does this impact on Hba1c measures? I ask as I have to make an appointment for a diabetic review. My last bloods were taken mid April so I was looking to have bloods taken mid July if feasible, this gives me six valuable weeks to get bloods down to a reasonable level, unfortunately at the moment I don't know if I am winning or losing. I keep testing the before meals then something will come up and I will miss the 2 hour after meal test so I don't have good statistics at present.

Great, I'll swap you a jar of goose fat if you swap me your tips for remission ;)
