Hi guys! - I have just posted this elsewhere on the forum but found this thread seems to be more appropriate.

My name is Matt, I'm 27 and live just outside of Southampton. I'm a type 1 and got diagnosed just over 3 months ago!!

Just thought I'd introduce myself and would be nice to chat to a few people in the same boat :)

I'm intrigued to know how everyone deals with it in their own ways and hopefully I can pick up a few tips along the way...

Hi @Matt_Harman and welcome to the club no one really wants to be in! I am recently diagnosed.....well 48 years ago......its a lot to take in at the moment BUT it will become easier, well the injecting and testing will anyway. Any questions you may have post them up....pretty sure someone will be along to help out. Pretty knowledgeable/friendly group here

Hi @Matt_Harman . Welcome to the forum.
As my good friend @porl69 has pointed out you’ve come to a good place.
3 months isn’t long and you can expect things to change and develop over the coming months and years.
Because of this it’s probably best not to get overly stressed when things don’t go as planned. Just get on here and let us know your concerns and problems and it’s highly likely someone will be able to help.
One thing I find with T1 is that it is best dealt with if you have a positive attitude, even when everything seems to be falling apart around your feet.
Be proud that you’re a T1 and you’ll be half way there.

I think you're probably right, just need to embrace it as best I can. Just another challenge life throws your way!

@Matt_Harman .
I embraced it 28 yrs ago. It’s not always plain sailing but making it an ally is far better than making it an enemy.

Hello matt! What are your numbers if i may ask?
C peptides and Antibodies if tested?
If you still have c peptide left, you can consider paleoketogenic diet which i folĺow for keeping autoimmune not progressing and hopefully improving.

Hiya Matt

I’m Sammie along the south coast also near Bognor Regis I’m 29 was diagnosed January last year but started my insulin yesterday due to body starting to no longer want to play.

It’s definitely hard to get your head around especially being older. I don’t have the answers just keep searching this post but I find the other posts are too long winded at times and I get lost with conversation and different diabetes lingos lol

Nice to meet you

@spage no one takes medication for type 1 it’s insulin either injection or pump. Meds are type 2 ‍♀️

@Matt_Harman
I’ve been type 1 for around 13 years (I got diagnosed at around 7). It is hard at first but eventually you’ll get used to. I currently use insulin injections (as I can’t bear having anything attached and am so used to the injections) and hardly felt them after a few months. Same with pricker. Everyone has differ struggles however in my opinion: the hardest thing is to working out the insulin ratio which is different what each person and carb calculating. However my diabetic team helps with the ratio: to see if it needs changing and as for carb calculating. I have the Dario monitor. So I can just add up how many carbs and it automatically works out how much insulin. (You can also save the meal and carbs if it’s a regular meal you have)
If you don’t have a smart meter I recommend you keep track of your blood sugar. Especially at the very beginning when your not quite used to it.

It may be hard and you will have tough times. However remain positive and know who you are. You’ll get through it

Hi I’ve been T1 for coming up 40 years now , and at first it’s tricky. Even more so in modern days as technology and info available is changing all the time. Only advice I can give is try not to suffer from information overload and don’t worry if th8ngs don’t go as planned . Remember you have to live with it so do things which help you . Blood sugar control can be a bit of a swine but don’t worry , a high blood sugar now and again will not be the end of the world. Groups like this and specialist health care people mean there is always good advice to be had
Good luck and welcome to the club

I think that's great advice. There's certainly a lot on information on here but just trying to keep things simple for now.

I did however manage to get a freestyle libre on the NHS which is helping massively.
