Possible diagnosis awaiting blood results

I have just spent a few hours at A&E and the doctor has said I might have diabetes but the blood test results will not be available until next week where they will be shared with my GP.

I just want to make sure that I don’t do anything stupid over the next couple of days in terms of drink and diet that could cause me a big problem whilst I await the results. I am just going to stick with water but are there any safe foods that I can stick too?

Hi and welcome to this site

It probably would't hurt to read around a bit- and if you don't feel well make sure you get medical help as you did when you went to A&E.

Good luck- let us know how the tests go.

Did they give you any information about blood sugar levels? And along with @VashtiB I agree if you start feeling sick or not well don't hesitate and go back to A&E.

Thanks for the quick responses. I got no information back on blood. The opinion was based on symptons and family history. Will be cautious if I feel unwell whilst waiting

That's... Weird. They could've at least given you a finger prick to check current levels, and shared those. Ah well. not the first puzzling thing I've read on here! Far as foods go, this might help: https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html Keep in mind it is geared towards type 2's and I don't know what type they suspect you to be, but it would hopefully prevent any huge spikes for a suspected T1 as well, as a bit of a band-aid until things get sorted. So if you have to stick with this for a week and just hope for the best, I suggest you go out TODAY and get yourself a blood glucose meter. And keto sticks. (The kind you urinate on, not the kid you draw blood for, for now). You need to know what your bloods are doing.

If at any time you start feeling sick, get yourself to A&E again eh. Please do keep us posted eh.
Good luck!
Jo

Can you call to find out or get a copy of test results. At least for the Blood Glucose level? Yes, I agree get a meter right away as if there is a family history it will be one of the best investments you can make.

Try your best to stay away from any sweetened drinks and sweetened foods.

I would be very cautious about going too low carb at this stage (other than cutting out obviously high carb foodstuffs such as sweets etc, if you eat them) because they will (hopefully) be doing a lot of monitoring and checking over the next few weeks in an effort to diagnose whether you have diabetes and if you do, what type. If you start drastically changing your eating habits right now it might mask any symptoms you have and delay diagnosis. That could even lead to them saying you're fine when you might not be and going through months more of illness especially if you turn out to be type 1/LADA). Not eating at all might also give false results. Having said that you would think they would have given you more of a clue what to do once you left hospital! I would immediately buy a glucose meter (if you can) and get checking over the next few days. If any readings are sky high or too high or you feel unwell etc, then don't wait until they contact YOU, get hold of your Dr asap. x

Thanks for the responses. I popped to the chemist today for the urine strips and the results were in the normal range. Unfortunately I was very dehydrated and fatigued during my A&E visit. In hindsight I do recall now that they tested a urine sample but they did say the blood results would take a couple of days

I have done my shop and have taken on some of the advice I got from here. I will look to keep the carbs lower. Hopefully I can get through the weekend then get my results on Monday. Appreciate the support.

Hi
Just to update the thread I don’t have diabetes. I have been referred to a neurologist to investigate the nerve issues.

Just want to say thanks for the help and support. Over the last few days I have tried to adopt the diet of a diabetic whilst I awaited the results and it was not much fun. Having read some of the threads here I am going to make some lifestyle changes to hopefully prevent me from having to go through what you guys are.
