How has this happened?

I just want to say that 150g of carbs in one day a week, on its own, would raise my levels for three or four days afterwards. Which would be enough to raise my hba1c test.

Wow ok, this is pretty significant, I didn't realise this. Back to the drawing board for me.

I forgot to mention that my daughter runs marathons and low carbs. She doesn't carb load, she drinks water. I can't find the website now for the nutrition for low carb marathon running, but I think it is the one previously mentioned upthread. She has been doing this for years.

She was pre-diabetic and has pcos.

from your original post if it was me i would carry on as you’re doing but ditch the nutella, energy drinks and gels, only you will know your own body and workout to suit what you can manage

Yup, this is what I need to do. I am finding that I am just starving post work out... and I do crave carbs. What do you do satiate this?

When you stop having the energy drinks/gels your body won’t be pining for carbs after your workout as you haven’t had any before

Can someone point out what equipment I'd need to measure blood sugars?

This is what Rachox wrote about it, that should help:

Here’s some info on UK meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned. For a meter with cheap strips go for the Tee2 + found here:

http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/tee2-plus-blood-glucose-meter/ with the strips found here:

http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/tee2-testing-strips/

Some members have got a free Tee2+ by phoning up to order, with a large order of strips they often throw the meter in for free:

Phone number 0800 8815423

With more expensive strips is the Caresens Dual which I currently use, this one has the advantage of glucose and ketone testing in one machine, it’s to be found here:

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/collections/caresens-dual

Home Health have recently bought out this one, but I haven’t heard any reviews yet, links to strips and the meter:

https://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/gluconavii-blood-sugar-meter-glucose-monitor-starter-kit/

And to be totally transparent I used to use the SD Code Free from Home Health which has the cheapest strips available if bought in quantities of 5 or 10 pots with the codes below. However I found it to be becoming less and less reliable. Here it is for anyone wanting to give it a go, just bear in mind it seems they are replacing it with the Navii, details above.

and here for the extra strips

http://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/sd-codefree-test-strips-to-be-used-only-with-the-sd-monitor/

There are discount codes if you buy in bulk.

5 packs 264086

10 packs 975833

Don’t forget to check the box if you have pre diabetes or diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)

Hi all, so I've bought an Abbot Libre and have just set it up this morning. Guess it'll be very interesting to see how my blood sugar levels go. Was 5.8 when it came on at 1030 and has risen slowly to about 7 since then.

There are lots of posts about how to do this, but I would test 1 and 2 hours after every meal to see how it affects.your bloods

If you intend to do energy drinks still I would test after those also, you may be surprised how much they hit you.

As a note how long does a 70km bike ride take you to do? I do quite allot of excersise and I don't do any carb loading, I do eat before now but I find something while Wheaty and carby gives me all the energy I need and it's a slower burn. Two shredded wheat is like 60g of.csrbs I think but it takes way longer to digest so I find it doesn't hit my bloods, if I drank 60g of carbs in sugary water I would see a big spike quickly.

With the Libre I get a constant read, and I'm scanning enough now not to miss any data haha

I normally do quite a lot of hills with the riding so not that fast, 70km / 1,000m vertical ascent takes me about 3 hours. I normally average about 22kmh. My last ride was 60km and I had about 60 grams of carbs (4 small Brazilian Cheese breads) and 1 gel and did just fine so think I've been really overdoing it and intend to cut down.

I had thought the exercise would burn it off but clearly I've been overdoing it.

So update on my BS levels today...
Breakfast: small dose of Cheddar
Lunch: Salmon / Tuna / Pesto and a Lemon squeeze
Dinner: Steak with avocado & cream fraiche

My sensor came online at 1030 this morning and my BS has been 6-7.8 and is now dropping to 4.6 after dinner.
