That makes sense, Australia has acted quickly to control the virus. The last thing they need is visitors to bring it in with them. This article I found interesting.

This is not good news anywhere:

Thank you RRB for writing the words I couldn't find. That is shocking, I am over 60 and it has made me feel like a worthless burden (even though I know I'm not). Those poor people, I too am over 60..................
So it continues. It's a clear follow-on from the endless narrative of stating that the vast majority of those who have died had underlying conditions and/or were elderly. As if we are of less importance. This is not good news anywhere:

Mine too. Sounds like 'cleansing' to me.So it continues. It's a clear follow-on from the endless narrative of stating that the vast majority of those who have died had underlying conditions and/or were elderly. As if we are of less importance.
Many of my paternal relatives died in concentration camps. He was smuggled out as a young child. Please, let's not diminish the importance of the narrative unfolding, the wording, the undermining of the value of the sick, old, disabled as expendable.
My heart is sick.
However, this is not new during the pandemic. You know how people talk about Sweden's success?

They left the over 70's to die. They wouldn't let them in hospitals. Read the article.
Reading the above is heartbreaking. DNRs are one thing but refusal to admit to hospital another, which was of course pretty much the policy in UK during first wave.
For me there is still a mismatch between large groups of workers/people such as schools being just allowed to get on with it and the incredible precautions taken by tv producers even in groups that are low risk!
I think Max's comment that if 99% of population are not badly affected by virus why exclude the group that is is brilliant.
No wonder conspiracy theories flourish.
What for me stands out is that whatever else is happening advice/protection to those most vulnerable to the virus seems to be very low priority. Again there is the perception that those that die are over 80 or are able to lock themselves away .
I think the numbers who are vulnerable and work are just to high to feasibly protect. The economy is prioritized.
I think if you are of working age, vulnerable but not in a job where you can work from home or rely on a covid safe environment you are very much on your own. Collateral damage.
The only light on the horizon is a vaccine. The Oxford one sounds very positive. However if you put to one side the jubilant claims all this will be over by Easter and listen to the scientists it's much more cautious and reliant on the uptake of the vaccine by the public and social distancing and hygiene rules being maintained.
Care homes are also complex. Initially the news that a minimum amount of visitors will be allowed is positive. However to do this safely you need a fast, consistent and reliable testing system. Fingers crossed for that one.
This government, and many worldwide only pay lip service to protecting their most vulnerable citizens. I havent seen or heard anything that's really changed that. What I find more disturbing is that apart from those who have close contact with such individuals society as a whole isnt outraged either.
I think there are still those of us who are aware of what can happen when when a government views groups of citizens as beneath contempt and without value.
It was vowed it would never happen again.
Maybe not quite in the same way but if you look back over nearly a year at the plight of those most vulnerable, how little they have been protected emotionally and physically from the virus and how little genuine opposition there is to that.......
As is often the case you have hit the nail on the head I think. I hadn't even thought of it that way but those who are leading the most restricted lives wont even be offered care! As you have pointed out care home residents are totally reliant on those who care for them. The majority are dedicated beyond belief but also no sick pay etc. That's lovely and hopeful news about your Mums care home. I dont know if they would test the resident as I assume they view the resident as being the most vulnerable. A proportion of visitors must be vulnerable so maybe they will in certain circumstances. Fingers crossed! The other disgrace of the content in those articles is this. Let's say for argument sake than most people in moderate/high risk groups are more careful in what they do, maybe they stick to the rules more than some who are less at risk. Care home residents for instance are literally at the mercy of the lifestyle and movements of those around them. So does that mean we don't treat those who are doing everything possible to avoid the virus if they get it but do treat those who are blaze about their own and others safety if they were to pick it up? Disgraceful if so.
This might be of interest to you JRT. At my mothers care home they have now notified us that the have rapid Covid tests which will cost visitors £10. So you turn up at your visit, take the test, and 10 minutes later you have a result. If negative they will take the perspex screen away and a relative can give their loved ones a hug. Only one visitor allowed at a time mind you and they don't say if your loved one has the test as well.
Today, two of my escort children were told to self isolate because a classmate has been diagnosed with Covid 19, so their parents picked them up. Then later this afternoon, a message was sent to inform us that the school will be closed tomorrow. The council hasn't told me anything about the closure, it came from the transport owner, also, 2 of my parents messaged me. My two children sit next to me in the taxi, a friend has advised me to contact 111 for advice.

Because it sells An example : when Boris was a journalist, he would make things up, bend the truth
Still does
That's very sad to hear. Infections in my part of world dropping drastically although seem to be daily reports of school infections.Well heard today that my old school has a staff member who tested positive yesterday. Over 10 staff and a handful of pupils didn't go in today and two others have been sent home this morning, one with a temperature. Looks like the school will be on a virtual timetable again with only the vulnerable kids in. Old colleague texted me and said I had left at the right time!!
This does in fact pose an interesting question regarding vaccinations with regard to those who would rather not partake. Will employers insist that all employees are vaccinated?
