Potato milk!

Waitrose is launching as part of its alternative to dairy, vegan alternatives, potato milk!

I will not read the ingredients, as it's a waste of time!
I am dairy intolerant.................. Strike one!
I am wheat intolerant.................Strike two!
I am starch intolerant.................Strike three!

And because the stuff they use to replace the gluten is potato starch!...........Out!
And don't come back!

These idiots who are manufacturing our food, really haven't got a clue!

I wonder what nourishment is naturally occurring in this potato milk? I recognise that potatoes have nourishment, but given that only 9% is made from potato, I am sceptical of the claims to be packed with nutrients and minerals. Stiil, if I dont analyse the blurb, it sounds good.:angelic:

list of ingredients, including all the added vitamins etc to give it nourishment. I wonder how these vitamins are made and if they are also environmentally friendly? Most of the environmental claims see to be based on the potato, which is 9% of the total ingredients. It looks like most synthetic added vitamins are made from petroleum extracts or coal tar derivatives. That doesnt sound eco friendly, does it.

Ingredients: Water, Potato (9 %), Rapeseed Oil, Pea Protein, Acidity Regulator (Di-and Mono-Sodium Phosphate), Calcium Carbonate, Emulsifier (Sunflower Lecithin), Natural Flavour, Vitamins (D, Riboflavin, B12, Folic Acid).
 
No thanks. Quite aside from potatoes being, well, potatoes, this is almost certainly an industrial byproduct from the processed food industry. Probably pulverised potato peels mixed with water, bleached and sold on at 1000% profit. Or something. I dunno, but it’s still a no from me :eek:

I'm certain there was a planned purpose within the food industry to limit the amount of ingredients that were not actually food that were as you say, petroleum or oils? But that was probably pre brexit!:angelic:

It's only 6% potato so not that high in carbs (4.4g/100ml)
but still too high in starch!

starch is not good!
a percentage of a percentage is still not accurate, and can be used to reflect a real answer!too
 
It proves that declaring something vegan makes others think it is healthy.

I dread to think about rickets. When my mother was a child it was common. I hope it isn't going to return big time due to people not realising how little calcium, healthy fat and protein is in these milk and assuming the are a like-for-like cow's milk substitute.

Ummm, you can be very unhealthy and vegan. It is definitely not considered the healthy option in many places nowadays.
I was talking to a vegan (non diabetic) colleague this week. He was complaining that most vegan restaurants opening at the moment are vegan fast food. He is finding it challenging to eat out with something fresh, healthy and vegan.

I agree, but all the media rhetoric is about vegan = healthy and environmentally good.

It is because the original message of Whole Food Plant Based has been hijacked by the "Plant Based" sub section, which in my view is fake food. According to this analysis it is not going well:

Low fat diets led the way, where the market thought it was a good idea to create highly palatable, multi-ingredient meal like products, this is just a re-imagination of that scene - junk food. Low Carb / Keto should be careful not to go in the same direction, especially seeing the products in the States.

If I were Vegan it would be easy choices i.e. everything I see in a market stall area that I can touch whole; similarly with animal based mostly whole items or very minimally processed.
 
Puts me in mind of the book ‘Good Omens’ by Pratchett and Gaiman, where Famine invents some branded ready meals (CHOW, followed by MEALS) with no nutritional content whatsoever…

“MEALS was CHOW with added sugar and fat. The theory was that if you ate enough MEALS you would a) get very fat, and b) die of malnutrition.”

This stuff is definitely MEALS.

Years ago I believed vegan was fresh, completely natural and healthy - though not really to my liking - but what I'm seeing now is often "vegan" junk food.:yuck::yuck: And @Mbaker, my recent thoughts have been that "Keto" is already going the same way....
